Bio

My name is Deneb Kamt. I am pursuing my studies in traditional Chinese medicine at the Florida College of Integrative Medicine, following the completion of my associates degree in liberal arts from University of Mississippi. This journey has been a transformative one, as I am on the verge of attaining a Bachelor of Science Degree in Professional Health Studies along with a Master of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. My aspirations extend beyond academic achievements; my ultimate goal is to leverage my education to serve communities across the country, inspired by the altruistic ethos instilled in me by my parents. Growing up in Peru, I witnessed firsthand the impact of community service through my parents' dedication. They tirelessly provided assistance to those in need, operating a clinic throughout the week while dedicating weekends to community outreach. Their compassionate approach and the effectiveness of holistic treatments left an indelible mark on me, fueling my passion for holistic medicine. On the other hand, pursuing a graduate degree while trying to pay off student loan debt can be financially challenging which led me to delay starting school again until I’m financially able to handle the debt that comes with the degree. I am excited to be a part of Bold.org's community, and I am grateful for any support that I receive in pursuing my goal of becoming a professor and helping my community. Thank you for considering me!

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been a magical world in which I have had the fortune to grow up and learn alongside my parents. My parents were a great inspiration to me as they helped patients from different social classes. Their work was endless and greatly rewarded by the affection of their patients, making TCM even more interesting for me. From a young age, I was able to understand that this medicine could help everyone and in any type of ailment. During the week, my parents attended a clinic they had in Lima, Peru. On weekends or in certain months, they would close the clinic to travel and hold community consultations, Qi Gong classes, yoga, or seminars on nutrition for patients and those interested in improving their quality of life. In this journey in which my parents were protagonists, I was included in this world. For years, I saw each of the patients go through their treatments, healing or feeling better. We saw patients with anxiety, stress, and even terminal illnesses, and they all came back. It was gratifying for my parents to see improvements in their patients and to refine their techniques with each treatment. From an early age, I replicated what I saw my parents doing with their patients. I used to acupuncture my stuffed animals, diagnose them, ask them about symptoms, and imagine their complaints, dreaming of being a doctor like my parents. When my parents deemed it appropriate, I joined them during intakes with patients. My father talked to his patients in a certain calid way that for a few moments, the atmosphere of sickness and illness disappeared. When I turned 18, my father passed away from lung cancer. He didn't have many symptoms, so it was difficult for us to realize it in time. My father left behind many anecdotes of care and love among his patients and friends. His absence deeply marked our family, especially his patients. Although this process was tough, his teachings still live on in me, and I cherish in my heart the recordings that some of his students made of the classes he taught. At 21, I moved from Peru to Memphis, Tennessee, seeking to start a new and recover from the great emptiness left by my father's absence. From 21 to 25, it was a transitional period during which I understood that my path lay in healing. At first, it was difficult to understand the signs, but gradually they became more evident to me. The signs came from friends at work or older people who began asking me about how to take care of their health, what natural remedies to use for inflammation, blood pressure, or general pain. At first, I found it difficult to understand why they were coming to me, being the youngest and not having any idea how I could help them. After months I started understanding the reason being, and I began to see the subjective connotation. The only way I can express what I felt at that moment is that I "felt the call." I knew it was time to reconnect with what I had learned and understood for years but had not yet had the opportunity to practice or internalize everything that for years I learned from my parents and grandparents. I regained courage and began studying at the University of Oxford in Mississippi. I was there for two years until I earned my Associate's degree in Liberal Arts. After that, I knew I had to start exploring acupuncture schools. I visited New York, Houston, and Florida, analyzed my options, and with much fear but also with courage and a strong desire to live, I restarted a new life in Orlando, Florida to start my acupuncture career. It was tough starting over again, without friends, searching for work, and figuring out how to finance this new school; everything was very uncertain. But I had the conviction that this was what I wanted, and nothing would make me give up. I've been at the Florida College of Integrative Medicine since 2021. Initially, it was challenging to adapt to the language and new, yet familiar, theories. However, I gained confidence over time. To date, I have seen around 350 patients in my internship, and I am proud to have the support of my patients. I have been very fortunate to have them, even on difficult days. Their improvements lift anyone's spirits, but the best part is that acupuncture works, and I can attest to that. Now, that I am approaching graduation, there have been many times when I have thought how beautiful it would be to have my father with me to discuss treatments and talk about acupuncture. But with each passing month, each semester, I feel him closer, and I know that even though he is not with me physically, he guides me in every process, guides me with every treatment, and that's what I hold onto: his love for patients and his dedication. Upon graduating in December 2024, I would like to specialize in respiratory diseases. I would like to start the Respiratory Therapist program to improve my treatments and understand venereal diseases more deeply. On the other hand, I would like to promote this medicine in communities that need it the most, to show that this medicine is for everyone regardless of social status. I would like to encourage more acupuncturists to do the same, to perfect the technique and dedicate themselves to the health of the sick, which has kept this great medicine alive. I believe that at the end of this exhaustive program, what is worth it are the great things we can achieve from it, and I believe that at the end of the day, we owe it to our patients who trust their health in us. They entrust their health to us without knowing us, and we end up being only tools of heaven to leave our mark on this world.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Mental health has begun to assume greater importance in my generation. Just 50 years ago, mental health became a recognized right for the inhabitants of the United States, a first-world country. This recognition has gradually spread to low-resource countries, as they acquire more information, fostering greater awareness of the importance of self-care and its impact on overall health. Everyone strives to avoid situations that push them to their limits and pose serious problems. I am no exception; I have always endeavored to take care of myself, both physically and mentally, from my dietary habits to the friends I keep, who shares my aspirations and ambitions in life. While mental health has always been significant to me, my awareness deepened when I began studying it, understanding the potential issues I faced and how they could affect those around me. During my childhood school years, I experienced bullying. Although the term "bullying" wasn't prevalent at that time, the experience was nonetheless excruciating as I endured mockery and unfounded speculation. Throughout my adolescence, confusion plagued me; I grappled with anxiety, depression, and profound self-doubt, particularly when speaking in public. Growing up proved to be a painful journey, as no one truly comprehends the trials of another's experiences. At 24, when I embarked on my health education journey, I gained insight into my childhood struggles and empathized with my tormentors, who may have been reflecting the violence they witnessed at home. Over time, I delved deeper into understanding the human psyche, the effects of trauma on the brain, the development of stress, and the somatic manifestation of emotions. This exploration unveiled a world vastly different from the one I sought, yet one that was infinitely captivating to me. As I approach graduation this year, poised to obtain my Science Degree in Professional Health Studies and a Master of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine, I reflect on the invaluable knowledge gained over the past five years. I am committed to leveraging this knowledge to support children in managing their anxiety within school environments, providing a safe space for them to discuss their challenges at home and at school, knowing they have someone willing to listen.

My interest in holistic medicine comes from my family. When I was growing up, I watched my parents help people in Peru. They ran a clinic where patients with different health issues came for treatment. They devoted their weekends to community service and ran the clinic on weekdays. Seeing their dedication left a strong impression on me, teaching me the value of helping others. It wasn't until I turned 25 in 2019 that I fully understood this calling. My father passed away from lung cancer in 2014, and the years following were a period of adjustment and acceptance for my family. Meditation and acupuncture were important parts of my healing journey. After my dad passed away, I felt like a big part of me was missing, and I struggled to keep going. Meditation had always been a regular thing in my life; I had seen my parents do it on many occasions during trips and when they taught their students. But after my dad's death, I stopped meditating for a while. It was the last thing on my mind when it came to healing myself until I realized I needed it. My first meditation session in years was eye-opening. It helped me reconnect with myself and find inner peace. I became more aware of my surroundings and who I am, which made a big difference. Now, I meditate every morning before I start my day and before I see any patients. When I began studying acupuncture in 2019, I realized I needed to apply the lessons my family had taught me and continue their legacy of helping patients. Although this journey has been challenging, it has reinforced my compassion for those in need of care. With every treatment, I feel my father's presence guiding me. His effective treatments have inspired me to pursue holistic healing with passion. After completing my studies and earning my master's degree, I hope to travel to different countries to offer my skills through community service. This will not only allow me to help more people but also enhance my professional growth by understanding various diseases and their impact on different regions. Ultimately, I believe the greatest impact one can make in this world is by helping others heal from both physical and emotional ailments, which acupuncture can address across different types of diseases. Obtaining this scholarship would greatly support my journey in traditional Chinese medicine, allowing me to fulfill my dream of becoming a respected professional and spreading the benefits of this medicine far and wide.

In 2019, I began my studies to become an Acupuncturist and Herbalist. By the end of this year, I will be graduating and obtaining my Bachelor of Science Degree in Professional Health Studies and a Master of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. I embarked on this journey into medicine because I grew up witnessing patients being treated by my parents. They introduced meditation and acupuncture to many of their patients who found relief from their symptoms. While this medicine provides a great avenue to help many patients seeking solutions to their symptoms, being a student comes with its own set of challenges, and any financial or emotional support is crucial to pursue one's dreams. If I were to receive this scholarship, it would greatly assist in addressing certain outstanding payments and alleviate some of the worry about sustaining myself financially while completing this master's degree.

May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, a time when the importance of mental well-being takes center stage. With each passing year and evolving generations, mental health has rightfully claimed its spot as a top priority worldwide. The wealth of information now available provides accurate insights for diagnosis and guides effective treatment strategies for patients. I'm currently immersed in the study of Acupuncture and herbal medicine in Florida, and I've had the privilege of witnessing diverse patients during my internship. Among the prevalent challenges they face are anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorders. Encouragingly, many have experienced significant improvements, highlighting the efficacy of Acupuncture in addressing acute needs and empowering individuals in managing their symptoms. Our approach emphasizes personalized care, recognizing each patient's unique journey and delving into the root causes of their concerns. As a future acupuncturist, my aspirations extend beyond clinical practice. I envision engaging in community outreach across different countries, extending the right support to those in need while prioritizing accurate diagnosis through thorough understanding and analysis of their symptoms. My passion for Acupuncture stems from a lifelong exposure, having grown up with parents who were also practitioners in the field. This upbringing instilled in me a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of Acupuncture, further fueling my commitment to making a positive impact on mental health globally.

I'm currently deeply involved in studying traditional Chinese medicine at Florida College of Integrative Medicine. I'm working towards earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Professional Health Studies and a Master of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. Graduation is right around the corner. Being in a traditional Chinese medicine school has been both challenging and enriching. Learning from each acupuncturist/teacher who has passed through the clinic has not only enriched my understanding but also motivated me to view this medicine with great admiration. It has inspired me to forge ahead in discovering my own path within this field. My interest in holistic medicine comes from my family. When I was growing up, I watched my parents help people in Peru. This experience will not only enhance my professional skills but also deepen my understanding of the development of specific diseases and the unique health challenges faced by different regions across the world. Lastly, I am convinced that the most profound impact one can have on our world is through the compassionate assistance rendered to individuals in their journey towards healing, encompassing both physical illness and emotional distress, a realm in which acupuncture demonstrates remarkable efficacy across a spectrum of conditions. Acquiring this scholarship would not only serve as a significant help but also provide substantial reinforcement to my journey within traditional Chinese medicine. It would furnish me with the means to actualize my fervent ambition of emerging as a highly esteemed professional, dedicated to propagating the manifold benefits of this venerable healing tradition to a broader audience far and wide.

In 2014, my dad passed away from lung cancer. He was an acupuncturist doctor, and his passing left a huge void in my family, including myself. I was only 18 years old when my father died, which opened my eyes to the adversities of life and the world. It wasn't easy. It took me 3 or 4 years to recover, during which I finally decided to follow in his footsteps and help patients just as he did. Today, I am grateful for having helped myself move forward, but the process of finding myself again wasn't easy. In December of this year, I will be graduating as an acupuncturist, and I hope to be able to help those in need and promote this medicine just as my father did.

In 2018, I worked for a distributor. I had been working there for 3 years and felt it was time to change my path and start studying. I began at the community college in Oxford, Mississippi. Adapting to the new city and learning methods was challenging, but I was ready to tackle them. I kept my grades up with each professor, pushed myself to pass all my classes while maintaining my full-time job, and taking care of my son's needs. In 2020, I received my associate's degree in liberal arts and moved to Florida to pursue my dreams. The change was drastic. I had to find a new school for my son, a new home, new friends, and a new job. However, I knew that studying traditional Chinese medicine was my calling, and I wanted to dedicate myself to it forever. In 2021, I started studying at the Florida College of Integrative Medicine, entering an accelerated 3-year program to obtain my master's degree in traditional Chinese medicine and herbology. This course has been a significant challenge for me as it requires time and dedication to study its various subjects. I had to reduce my working hours as I spend around 40 hours at school and the rest studying at home. My son and I have grown together and matured along this journey. After three long years, I will be graduating in 2024 to practice and help others. After graduation, I hope to do community work to help people and bring health to those in need. While it has been difficult for me to succeed and excel, I couldn't imagine what it means for those who cannot do so due to health reasons. On the other hand, I would like to study to become a respiratory therapist after completing my degree. When my son was 4 years old, he had necrotizing pneumonia and was hospitalized for a month and a half because no medication was effective. He underwent surgery to remove the middle lobe of his left lung to extract the infection. After his surgery, acupuncture and good nutrition were the only things that helped him recover. Due to this experience, I would like to understand respiratory diseases and how they develop. Lastly, even though these past five years haven't been easy, they have been a necessary change for my personal growth and to overcome myself as a person. They have been years of challenges, but also of learning and growth. During this time, I have learned that with discipline, perseverance, and conviction, it is possible to move forward and achieve our goals. My son, on his part, has been my greatest source of strength. His unconditional support and unwavering love have given me the determination to keep going and fight for my dreams. As a single parent, my son was able to understand that my journey to become a professional is simply to show him that life is precious, and even with all the adversities, everything is possible, and the pursuit of happiness should never end.

In this journey in which my parents were protagonists, I was included in this world. For years, I saw each of the patients go through their treatments, healing or feeling better. It was gratifying for my parents to see improvements in their patients and to refine their techniques with each treatment. When I turned 18, my father passed away from lung cancer. He didn't have many symptoms, so it was difficult for us to realize it in time. My father left behind many anecdotes of care and love among his patients and friends. His absence deeply marked our family, especially his patients. At 21, I moved from Peru to Memphis, Tennessee. From 21 to 25, it was a transitional period during which I understood that my path lay in healing. I began studying at the University of Oxford in Mississippi. I was there for two years until I earned my Associate's degree in Liberal Arts. After that, I knew I had to start exploring acupuncture schools. I visited New York, Houston, and Florida, analyzed my options, and with much fear but also with courage and a strong desire to live, I packed my things, and I restarted a new life in Orlando, Florida to start my acupuncture career. It was tough starting over again, without friends, searching for work, figuring out how to finance this new school; everything was very uncertain. But I had the conviction that this is what I wanted, and nothing would make me give up. I have been at the Florida College of Integrative Medicine since 2021, and although it was difficult at first to adapt to the language and the new theories, even though they were familiar, I had never studied them before. However, I feel that I have managed to excel in each semester with every professor, every supervisor, sharing my experiences with patients, and always seeing pride in my professors knowing that I am providing good treatment. To date, I have seen around 350 patients in my internship, and I am proud to have the support of my patients. I have been very fortunate to have them, even on difficult days. Their improvements lift anyone's spirits, but the best part is that it works, and I can attest to that. As I am about to finish my master's degree in December 2024, there have been many times when I have thought how beautiful it would be to have my father with me to discuss treatments and talk about acupuncture. But with each passing month, each semester, I feel him closer, and I know that even though he is not with me physically, he guides me in every process, guides me with every treatment, and that's what I hold onto: his love for patients, his dedication, and his love for me.

Acupuncture has been a magical world in which I have had the fortune to grow and learn alongside my parents. They were a great inspiration to me as they helped patients from different social classes. Their work was endless and greatly rewarded by the affection of their patients. This made traditional Chinese medicine even more interesting to me, and from a young age, I was able to understand that this medicine helped everyone with any kind of ailment. During the week, my parents worked at a clinic they owned in Lima, Peru. On weekends or certain months, they would close the clinic to travel and provide community consultations, Qi Gong classes, yoga sessions, or seminars on nutrition to patients and those interested in improving their quality of life. When I turned 18, my father passed away from cancer, leaving behind many stories of care and love for his patients and friends. His absence left a huge void that marked our family, especially his patients. Although this process was tough, his teachings remain with me, and I hold dear the recordings made by some of his students of the classes my father taught. At 21, I moved from Peru to Memphis, allowing myself to be guided as always. From 21 to 25 was a transitional period during which I learned and understood that my path was in healing. That's when I started looking for acupuncture schools. I knew it was time to reconnect with what I had learned and understood for years but had not yet had the opportunity to practice. I am a student of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In December of this year, I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Professional Health Studies and a Master of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. Currently, I am completing my internship, and so far, I have been able to assist around 350 patients. Many come with various ailments, while others present with psychosocial issues such as low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, weight loss, or anorexia, among others. My approach with these patients is to show them the necessary patience and help them understand that I am here for them throughout this process. I have utilized different methods with patients, including acupuncture, relaxation techniques, EFT, herbal/natural medicine, and in some cases, dietary therapy. I believe that each generation has faced certain crises, and nowadays, it is even more evident. As doctors or physicians, we must have the responsibility to properly assist patients, guiding them through processes that are difficult to understand. Each person has a different background, and understanding the root of the problem opens up many answers, helping us as professionals to improve our diagnoses. Every patient who has come to me with insomnia or psychosocial problems has improved by 90%, and patients who came with other complaints such as diabetes, high blood pressure, polycystic ovary syndrome, or prostate problems have seen their symptoms improve when their emotional issues are also addressed. I believe that acupuncture, especially in the practice I engage in, has much to offer to anyone, especially those going through a difficult time in their lives. Finally, I grew up with parents who were involved in community work in economically disadvantaged areas, where education and mental health care are lacking. This is a sector I would like to help after I graduate, so I can expand my knowledge and teach those who need it most.
