Bio

My name is Delaney Elizabeth Mastriano, and I am a 21-year-old Caucasian female who lives in Clinton, Connecticut. My family is everything to me, and I am lucky to have two loving parents who are both educators, as well as two wonderful brothers. In my free time, I enjoy engaging in various physical activities such as walking, running, biking, swimming, hiking, and kayaking, which led me to pursue a degree in kinesiology from the University of Rhode Island. I am proud to say that I will be attending the University of Hartford for my clinical doctorate in physical therapy, as I am passionate about helping people improve their physical health and well-being. While I am aware of the financial burden that comes with three years of graduate school, I am determined to pursue my dream of becoming a physical therapist.

James B. McKillip Scholarship for Physical Therapy
Physical therapy holds profound significance for me, stemming from my academic background in kinesiology from the University of Rhode Island. I have always been fascinated by the intricate ways the human body functions and how movement impacts overall health and well-being. However, my understanding of physical therapy has evolved beyond mechanics and rehabilitation; it has become a passion for fostering holistic recovery. My journey through anxiety has highlighted the vital connection between mental and physical health, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive approach to wellness. The importance of physical therapy to me lies in its ability to empower individuals to regain independence and improve their quality of life. I have witnessed firsthand the transformative effects of rehabilitation on those recovering from injury, surgery, or chronic pain. Physical therapy not only restores function but also instills hope and resilience in patients, allowing them to reclaim their lives and pursue their passions. This empowerment resonates deeply with me, as I aspire to create a positive impact on the lives of others by facilitating their healing journeys. As I pursue my career in physical therapy, I aim to contribute to the profession by advocating for an integrative approach that emphasizes the importance of mental health alongside physical rehabilitation. My experiences with anxiety have instilled in me a profound empathy for individuals facing mental health challenges, and I believe that addressing these issues within the context of physical therapy is crucial for comprehensive care. I envision developing therapeutic practices that incorporate mindfulness, education about the mind-body connection, and supportive communication, creating an environment where patients feel safe and understood. Additionally, I am passionate about promoting awareness and destigmatizing mental health within the realm of physical therapy. By fostering open discussions and providing resources, I hope to encourage both patients and colleagues to prioritize mental well-being. I believe that creating a supportive and compassionate atmosphere in physical therapy settings can significantly enhance patient outcomes and foster a sense of community among healthcare providers. In summary, physical therapy is important to me because it embodies the potential for holistic healing, resilience, and empowerment. I aspire to make meaningful contributions to the profession by advocating for mental health awareness, fostering supportive environments, and empowering individuals to reclaim their lives through movement and rehabilitation. My goal is to help bridge the gap between physical and mental health, ensuring that every patient receives comprehensive care that nurtures both body and mind. I am incredibly grateful for your time and consideration, and receiving this scholarship would significantly alleviate my financial burden as a first-year physical therapy student, allowing me to focus on my studies and professional development.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
After graduating from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in kinesiology, I was thrilled to further my studies in physical therapy at the University of Hartford. My journey through these fields has been guided not only by academic knowledge but by my personal experiences with mental health challenges, including anxiety. Living with anxiety has profoundly shaped my goals, relationships, and perspective on the world, giving me a deeper appreciation for the complex interactions between mental and physical well-being. Managing anxiety throughout my undergraduate years often meant confronting self-doubt and intense academic pressure. These experiences have taught me resilience and adaptability, which are now core to my goals in the field of physical therapy. My mental health journey has shown me that recovery is not linear and has inspired me to approach therapy holistically, understanding that mental health is just as crucial to healing as physical rehabilitation. This perspective fuels my drive to become a compassionate physical therapist who prioritizes empathy and encourages patients to feel seen and understood. Moreover, witnessing many of my classmates struggle with mental illness, including the heartbreaking reality of losing peers to suicide, has reinforced the urgency of addressing mental health in both educational settings and therapeutic practices. These experiences have deeply affected me, highlighting the importance of creating supportive environments where individuals feel safe to share their struggles. Such awareness has shaped my resolve to advocate for mental health and to help destigmatize these conversations in my future career. In my relationships, mental health struggles have cultivated a strong sense of empathy and patience. Selective mutism, in particular, sometimes makes expressing myself verbally challenging, especially in high-stress or unfamiliar situations. Over time, this has helped me value clear and compassionate communication, deepening my connections with others. My friends and family know that there are times when I may need support without verbalizing it, and these relationships have taught me the importance of patience, understanding, and trust. I strive to bring these values to all my interactions, whether personal or professional. These experiences have also shaped my understanding of the world, giving me a unique perspective on resilience and the hidden struggles that others may face. I’ve come to see mental health not as an isolated struggle but as a part of the human experience that requires care and awareness. As a future physical therapist, I feel called to integrate these insights into my work, supporting patients not just in their physical recovery but in acknowledging the role of mental well-being. Pursuing a career in physical therapy is not just a professional ambition; it’s a personal mission shaped by my own journey toward self-acceptance and understanding. I am incredibly grateful for your time and consideration, and receiving this scholarship would be an invaluable support as I continue working toward making a positive impact in others' lives.
    Social Anxiety Step Forward Scholarship
After graduating from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in kinesiology, I was thrilled to further my studies and deepen my understanding of human movement and health by entering the physical therapy program at the University of Hartford. This program aligned perfectly with my passion for helping others through science-based approaches to physical rehabilitation and wellness. However, alongside that excitement came challenges related to managing my anxiety, which has been part of my life for some time but became more pronounced with the demands of undergraduate and graduate school. My journey with anxiety has included periods of selective mutism, particularly in stressful situations, which at times makes it difficult to communicate as fully as I’d like. Balancing my academic and career aspirations with my mental well-being has been both challenging and rewarding. Throughout my undergraduate years, anxiety often manifested as self-doubt and intense stress around academic performance, which sometimes impacted my ability to fully engage with my studies. In managing these challenges, I developed strategies to help me find balance and stay focused on my goals. For example, I’ve learned to structure my time more effectively, giving myself space to work in manageable increments rather than trying to do it all at once. Exercise and mindfulness practices have also been essential, both as stress outlets and ways to remain grounded, especially during intense periods in the physical therapy program. Learning these techniques has reinforced my commitment to growth, reminding me that each step forward reflects my resilience and dedication. My background in kinesiology gave me a solid foundation in understanding the mechanics of the human body, but managing my anxiety and selective mutism has given me insights into the mental aspects of health, resilience, and recovery. This personal experience has added a layer of empathy and understanding to my goals as a future physical therapist. I know firsthand that mental well-being is closely intertwined with physical recovery, and my journey equips me to support others who may be facing both mental and physical challenges. Pursuing my degree in physical therapy is not only about building a career; it’s a testament to my journey toward balance and self-acceptance. Managing anxiety has taught me the value of persistence, self-care, and compassion, which I hope to share with my future patients as they navigate their own paths to recovery. This degree is more than an academic achievement—it represents a commitment to personal growth and my readiness to make a positive impact in others' lives, using both my knowledge and my experiences to support those in need. I am incredibly grateful for your time and consideration, and receiving this scholarship would be a tremendous help as I continue to pursue my goals and work toward making a difference in the lives of others.

Since I was young, I've had a strong passion for helping others feel better; my family even nicknamed me "Doctor D" because of this. When I was just two years old, I proudly wore a stethoscope around my neck, signaling my early interest in healthcare. As I grew older, my desire to pursue a career that positively impacts people's lives became increasingly evident. During a family vacation, my aunt handed out t-shirts that represented each of our unique contributions, and mine read, "I bring the sunshine." I believe my compassion, empathy, and optimistic outlook are the qualities that will make me a successful physical therapist. I obtained my degree in Kinesiology from the University of Rhode Island. During my time there, I worked as an outpatient rehabilitation aide for over three years, gaining invaluable experience during my summers and part-time while completing my undergraduate studies. Additionally, I completed a 400-hour inpatient physical therapy and occupational therapy internship. I learned that being an effective physical therapist requires not only technical skills, but also the ability to listen deeply. Understanding the patient's needs, concerns, pain, history, and goals, as well as the activities they find challenging, is crucial. In my role as a rehabilitation aide, I honed my listening skills, allowing me to build meaningful connections with patients and provide tailored treatment. Patient feedback is crucial for effective care, and I have become adept at gauging their feelings at different stages of treatment to identify what works and what doesn’t. I also worked diligently, balancing two jobs as a lifeguard and rehabilitation aide during the day and waiting tables at night. Currently, I am in my first year of physical therapy school at the University of Hartford. Attending classes and learning each day increases my excitement as I approach my goal of becoming a physical therapist. I am a member of APTA (American Physical Therapy Association) and will continue to be a member to support my commitment of being a lifelong learner. While I prioritize my studies, I continue to waitress in my free time to support my financial needs. Unfortunately, I will graduate with over $100,000 in student debt from my undergraduate degree and graduate school. Receiving this scholarship would significantly alleviate my financial burden and allow me to engage more actively in my community. I love volunteering for AmpSurf to help disabled individuals surf and get onto the beach; sadly my volunteer time is limited by the need to make money. I believe I would be an excellent fit for this scholarship due to my commitment to providing the highest quality care to every patient and my ambition to make a meaningful difference in their lives, just like Michael J. Peters.

As a child, I always had a fascination with the human body and how it worked. My family noticed my interest and started calling me “Doctor D”, as I would often play pretend with my toy stethoscope and try to make everyone feel better. This early interest in healthcare continued as I grew up, and I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in the field. My passion for physical therapy was ignited when I shadowed a physical therapist during my high school years. Witnessing the positive impact this profession had on the patients it served, I knew that this was the path I wanted to take. One of the most important qualities that I possess, and one that I believe will be invaluable as a physical therapist, is my deep compassion for others. This quality has been a part of me since I was very young, and it has only grown stronger over the years. I have seen firsthand how compassion can make a significant difference in the recovery process for patients. During my high school years, I had the opportunity to shadow physical therapists in various settings, including an elementary school and an outpatient clinic. I observed how physical therapists worked with patients of all ages and with different injuries, chronic conditions, disabilities, illnesses, and symptoms of pain. I learned that therapists with higher levels of compassion had greater success in helping their patients recover. This experience reinforced my desire to pursue a career in physical therapy, and I knew that I wanted to be a part of making a positive difference in the lives of those I work with. During my undergraduate years, I gained over 1000 hours of observation experience working as a rehab aide at two outpatient clinics. Additionally, I completed a 400-hour internship in inpatient physical and occupational therapy, where I had the opportunity to assist and observe PT/OT sessions, and learn more about postoperative orthopedic patients. These experiences have solidified my passion for physical therapy and have given me the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in this field. In addition to helping others physically improve as a future career, I also enjoy volunteering to help others move. I volunteered with an organization called AmpSurf, which helps disabled individuals get onto the beach, into the water, and up on the surfboard. As a volunteer, I was in the water helping and keeping the athletes safe so that they could focus on their abilities while surfing. I plan to continue volunteering for this organization in the future, as there is nothing better than giving individuals the ability to complete activities that make them happy. Another volunteer experience relating to movement was a research volunteer for VR Prosthetic Research Study for Upper Extremity Amputations. As a volunteer, I was completing tasks to help make prosthetics easier to adapt to for upper extremity amputees. These are two volunteer examples, but I enjoy giving back to the community in any way possible, especially volunteering at my local food pantry. While I am aware that attending graduate school to become a physical therapist will put me further into debt, my ultimate goal is to listen to, care for, and improve the quality of life for each patient I treat. I am excited to start this journey and to make a positive difference in the lives of those around me. I believe that receiving this scholarship would help me reduce my financial burden and allow me to fully focus on pursuing a wonderful career that I am truly passionate about. Thank you for your time and consideration!
