In October of 2021, I was cheering at a football game, just waiting for my mother to pick me up. It took an abnormally long time, but my mom was the main money-maker in my family, earning close to 80k a year. I could never expect that, as I was just wondering where she was, she almost died. In an intersection, getting money for my dad, an 80-year-old man had been in cardiac arrest, fully crashing into her, T-boning her car, blowing the engine through her foot. Her lungs were fractured, and shortly after, my grandmother picked me up, telling me how we had to go to the hospital. I never fully understood the severity of this situation until my life flipped upside down when I saw her in the stretcher. I knew this would change my life, not knowing if she would live or die. Eventually, she recovered, but was never able to go back to work as a Hygienist, her dream career. The 80-year-old man died two days after. My dad is a truck driver, so as him as the money-maker, we didn't have nearly enough to get necessities. Every time she hears or sees her patients, she cries, wishing this had never happened. Her insurance company never paid her full wages, now making us low-income. She had to use her retirement fund, 401 (k), and any money she had saved to get lawyers. Eventually, we found out that the 80-year-old man was continuously found in ditches due to his recurrent cardiac arrest. He was advised by doctors and his family to stop driving, which we found out two years after the lawsuit started. He did not, leaving my mom's life to be fully ruined forever. We are now low-income. It affects my sports; sometimes, we don't have enough money for groceries, laundry detergent, and soap. My mom figures it out, though, so I can have my necessities. With this scholarship, I plan to use it to go to college so I can pay back my parents, for scraping up enough money to take care of me, make sure I have presents on Christmas or for my birthday, and to make sure they have enough money to not worry about bills, car payments, or loans. I'd use this to become a Dental Hygienist, follow in my mother's footsteps, to finish the career she never got to retire from. In her eyes, her life ended after October of 2021, but that doesn't mean that I can't carry on in her legacy.
