Daelyn Bledsoe Legacy of Love and Leadership Scholarship
“Do no harm” The pledge that all medical students make when they are ready to face the world. Becoming the new generation of doctors. They have in their hands the life of millions of people from newborns to elderly people. From rare diseases to the most common ones, they will make a great change in people's lives, whether good or bad they will come into our lives for a reason. That’s what I achieve to become, the person to bring the change, be the change. Wanting to become a doctor is not enough, it has to be a desire, an aspiration, the purpose of getting out of bed every morning. You have to love your career and never regret taking this big responsibility as your own. My dream, my desire, is to be a doctor; it's like a calling to help shape and make the healthcare system a little better. Medical schools are recommended to students by professionals and academic advisors. College provides a strong academic foundation in subjects like biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, which are essential to medical studies, and have a significant impact on aspiring physicians. It fosters the critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills necessary for a career in medicine. Isn’t oncology one of the saddest medical careers? Well yes, in a way but it can be also seen as one of the medical pathways where there are occasionally miracles, or nobody would be able to cope with it. Cancer has been very close to as one of my most beloved aunts was diagnosed with it. She had to endure this hard process, while she also had to take care of her kids, which was not easy. But with the right treatment she was saved. So, to be able to help them regain their dignity and control their pain is a very satisfying experience as a doctor. But sometimes medication and pain killers don’t work so effectively, and the symptoms can be felt in a very present, so one of my goals is to be able to produce a more effective medication that can alleviate the symptoms of the chemo or even on their death bed. A medicine that can be seen in heaven in a little capsule, it would work as a pain killer, but it would reduce the secondary effects of the treatment to the point where they would become minimum to none. Colleges offer opportunities for research that will help me, and other students grow in their ability to think scientifically and in their knowledge of research methods. Extracurricular activities will help improve my interpersonal, collaborative, and leadership skills necessary for a future in medicine. This is the beginning of a new chapter in my life, one in which it will bring new challenges and discoveries in which I will be able to know myself more every day. I will know what I am strong in and what I am not, I will work on turning what I already am into something incredible. UTEP is the university where I would like to be able to do this, to be able to believe in what I have always wanted. UTEP is the university closest to my family, to my home. The concept of money in my family is very low, being able to get this scholarship would help take that weight off my mother's shoulders and mine. She always promised to help me pay for my studies, but I know how difficult it would be for her to have to provide for my 3 siblings and also have to pay for me. I would like to be able to hold her hand and see her in the eyes and take care of what is stressing her out. Take that burden and give it to me, with this scholarship I could make that happen. Being able to realize your dream, in which I become a doctor like my grandmother was. All my life my family has taken the task of making my sister and my women strong, who know what they want and do not let themselves be bossed around by anyone. But thanks to them I am that woman for them now. My grandmother and my mother are one of the most admirable women I know. They are not perfect, but they are everything to me. UTEP, the miners; It would be my base, my mold to build the future I so desired. It's the perfect place to help me solve problems on my own. Success in life and in school depends on the critical thinking skills you will take from UTEP. A degree can also help me develop skills such as time management, critical thinking, problem solving, and effective communication. As a Latino family, you could take my example as something to follow. In the health sector the percentage of women is 70%, but the percentage of Latinos is low so I want to be part of it. Be part of the change as a society and as a woman. In my family, being able to enter university is a privilege, being in university is a necessity. Especially for my mom, she is a person who appreciates education. Ignorance is not a practice in my house, to be ignorant is to despise all those sacrifices that my mother and my grandparents made for me throughout my childhood and adolescence. But it is also a way of belittling all that effort that I myself made and trained during my life. Entering university to continue my studies is a big step that I will take in my life, in which I will prove to myself that everything because what my family and I fought for was not in vain but will blossom into something much greater. and important. To make change there has to be a desire in you, and I have it, I want my flag to be raised high. If i was given the opportunity to make change, I will be the change. My career is a long and difficult path to walk, but I will walk through it with my head help up high, knowing who's watching me. My dream has always been to be able to be part of a great discovery and change in this world and I think that this career might bring me this amazing opportunity.
      Crawley Kids Scholarship
During my senior year in Franklin High School I got involved in the National Honor Society that is held in my high school. My goal was to complete 100 hours of community service at the end of the school year. Completing 100 hours was difficult and it definitely takes time and dedication but it does not compare to the feeling of accomplishment once you finally reach the goal. I am proud to say that my long term goal of a 100 hours was accomplished. Community service thought me that no matter the hours or physical toll it might take to volunteer your time, it always come with a reward. My favorite community service activity was volunteering at elementary schools, the smiles always make it all worth it. Little kids come over to say thank you for always helping and they hope to help the way I did, once they grow up. The impact may not be noticeable but it doesn't mean there wasn't any. My dream career is medicine, and as one when you graduate you pledge to always help and do no harm. Community service thought me how to be selfless and accommodate to other people's needs, besides mine.
