My name is Lamar, and I am a proud first-generation college student pursuing a degree in Construction Management Technology. As an African American student entering a field where people of color are historically underrepresented, I am motivated to help reshape what leadership looks like in the built environment. Coming from a low-income household and navigating higher education without a familial roadmap, I have faced challenges that strengthened my resilience and ambition. I learned early how to advocate for myself while balancing academics, work, and family responsibilities. Through discipline and determination, I have maintained strong academic performance while applying both classroom knowledge and real-world experience to my studies. My professional experience in construction and facilities management has deepened my interest in leadership, communication, and advocacy—especially in projects that affect access, safety, and dignity for others. I am passionate about using clear, empathetic communication to bridge gaps between technical teams, stakeholders, and the communities they serve. Outside of my studies, I value creative and reflective outlets such as writing, music, and hands-on projects, which help me stay grounded and focused. I also believe strongly in giving back by mentoring and supporting other first-generation students. My long-term goal is to grow into a leadership role where I can manage complex projects while advocating for equitable, human-centered design and inclusive decision-making in construction.
