Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
My experience with mental health has greatly shaped my goals, relationships, and perspective on life. Dealing with my own mental health struggles has taught me the importance of self-care and prioritizing my well-being. It has made me realize that mental health is just as important as physical health, and that taking care of my mental health should be a top priority in my life. This realization has influenced my goals by making me more focused on achieving a balance between work, school, and self-care.
In terms of relationships, my experience with mental health has helped me cultivate a deeper sense of empathy and understanding towards others who may be struggling with their own mental health issues. It has made me more aware of the importance of providing support and creating a safe space for those who are going through difficult times. My personal challenges have taught me the significance of transparent communication in relationships and the necessity of reaching out for assistance and support when necessary. In general, my encounters with mental well-being have molded me. My perspective on life by teaching me the importance of resilience and perseverance. It has shown me that it is okay to not be okay sometimes, and that it is important to seek help and support when needed. My experiences have also inspired me to pursue a career in mental health advocacy, in the hopes of helping others who may be going through similar struggles. Ultimately, my journey with mental health has taught me that it is through our struggles that we grow and learn, and that overcoming obstacles can lead to a stronger sense of self and a deeper appreciation for the journey of life.
Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
Billie Eilish is a talented and unique artist who has captured the hearts of many with her hauntingly beautiful voice and thought-provoking lyrics. As a college student, I have found myself drawn to her music for its raw emotion and vulnerability. Three of my favorite Billie Eilish songs are "bury a friend," "everything i wanted," and "my future" for their resonating themes and captivating melodies.
One of my top Billie Eilish songs is "bury a friend" due to its dark and eerie vibe that draws you in from the very beginning. The song delves into the darker aspects of fame and inner struggles, resonating with many who may feel overwhelmed by their own demons. The haunting melody coupled with Eilish's haunting vocals create a sense of unease that is both captivating and deeply emotional.
"Everything I Wanted" is another one of my favorite Billie Eilish songs because of its introspective lyrics and melancholic tone. The song explores feelings of loneliness and the pressure to succeed, which are themes that many college students can relate to. Eilish's emotive delivery and dreamy production make this song a powerful and introspective listen that speaks to the struggles and fears that we may face in our own lives.
Lastly, "my future" is a standout track for me because of its hopeful and empowering message. The song follows Eilish's journey towards self-discovery and growth, reminding listeners that it is okay to take a step back and focus on yourself. The dreamy instrumentals and uplifting lyrics create a sense of optimism and renewal, making it a perfect anthem for those going through a period of change and transformation. Overall, Billie Eilish's music resonates with me for its honesty, vulnerability, and ability to capture complex emotions in a way that is both relatable and deeply moving.

Mamie Till-Mobley was a courageous and inspiring figure who left a lasting impact on the civil rights movement. As a mother who lost her son, Emmett Till, to a brutal act of racism, she demonstrated extraordinary strength and resilience in seeking justice for her son. Her unwavering determination to fight for civil rights and challenge systemic racism serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up against injustice.
Mamie Till-Mobley's courage in transforming her own suffering into a means for advancement has fueled my passion for activism. She would not let her sons devastating death silence her; instead, she bravely raised her voice against the racially inspired violence that caused it. With courage, she told Emmetts tale to the world, determined to honor his memory and ensure his impact would never be lost.
The profound impact of Mamie Till-Mobley's tale lies in her steadfast resolve to advocate for her sons justice. She refused to back down in the midst of immense obstacles, working tirelessly to ensure Emmetts killers were held responsible and to raise awareness of the injustices African Americans face in the U.S. Even in the face of adversity, her unwavering bravery and resilience stand as a compelling reminder to me and countless of others of the significance of fighting for justice, no matter the obstacles.
Additionally, Mamie Till-Mobley's activism extended past just seeking justice for her son. She became a prominent figure in the civil rights movement, using her platform to advocate for racial equality and social justice. Through her fearless activism, she sparked a national conversation about the pervasive racism and bias that hindered progress towards equality in America and also motivating a new wave of activists such as myself to carry on the fight for equality.
In conclusion, Mamie Till-Mobley's life and legacy serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of courage, resilience, and determination in the face of injustice. Her ability to turn personal tragedy into a catalyst for change, her unwavering commitment to seeking justice, and her tireless advocacy for civil rights make her an enduring inspiration to me and to countless others. Through her actions, she has proven the incredible influence one person can have on shaping the world, leaving a lasting impression that will continue to motivate generations to come to fight against injustice and promote equality. She to me is truly an inspiration and one of the reasons I've chosen to pursue my Bachelors in Social work, if I am able to accomplish just a sliver of what she has I will've created change.
Henry Bynum, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
As a young mother and woman of color, I have faced numerous challenges and obstacles in my journey. One of the largest hurdles I have conquered is the judgment and discrimination often faced by women of color like myself. Society often places limits on what women of color can achieve, assuming that we are not capable of reaching the same level of success as others. That being said, I have adamantly refused to let these stereotypes shape my identity and have tirelessly strived to debunk them.
Another major obstacle I have faced is the struggle of balancing motherhood with pursuing my education and career goals. Being a young mother means constantly multitasking between caring for my child, furthering my education, and progressing in my career. This has not been easy, as it has required me to make sacrifices and choices that many of my peers have not had to make. Nevertheless, my resolve to forge a prosperous path for myself and my child has remained steadfast as I confront the hardships of being a young mother of color.
Despite the difficulties I have faced, I have found strength in my own resilience and determination. I have refused to let the challenges I have encountered hold me back or define me. Rather than allowing them to hold me back, I have harnessed them to propel me forward and push myself towards achieving my dreams. My chosen family of supportive friends has been instrumental in helping me navigate difficult situations and inspiring me to persevere.
My mission is to equip and elevate young mothers of color in my community by providing them with the necessary resources and opportunities to excel in life and career. Mental health support is crucial in navigating the challenges of motherhood, so I will ensure that counseling and therapy services are easily accessible. Financial assistance programs will be implemented to alleviate the financial burdens that often come with raising a family. Additionally, educational resources such as parenting classes and career development workshops will empower these women to build a brighter future for themselves and their children. I am committed to uplifting and empowering young mothers of color in my community by offering a comprehensive support system that ensures their success and wellbeing. Hand in hand, we can tear down walls and foster a society where fairness is paramount.
In conclusion, being a young mother and woman of color has presented me with numerous challenges, but I have refused to let them stop me from pursuing my dreams. Through hard work, determination, and the support of others, I have been able to overcome adversity and continue to strive for success. Aspirationally, I trust that my journey can serve as a source of inspiration for fellow young mothers and women of color who find themselves up against comparable challenges, illustrating to them that they are competent enough to realize their ambitions amidst any obstacles they encounter - a mission I fully intend on pursuing further down the road.

Childhood trauma has been my greatest challenge, as it has left a profound impact on my mental and emotional well-being. The experiences I went through during my formative years have shaped my outlook on life and have influenced the way I navigate relationships and handle stress. It has been difficult to overcome the memories and feelings that resurface from time to time, but I have worked diligently to heal and grow from the pain. Overcoming childhood trauma was not an easy journey for me, but with determination and resilience, I was able to heal and move forward. I sought therapy to help me process my past experiences and address the emotions and beliefs that were holding me back. Through therapy, I learned coping mechanisms and strategies to navigate triggers and negative thought patterns. I also practiced self-care and self-compassion, allowing myself to grieve and release the pain of my past. Surrounding myself with a supportive network of friends and family who believed in my ability to heal was essential in my journey. Ultimately, I learned that healing is a process, and it takes time and effort. By facing my trauma head-on and seeking help, I was able to transcend my past and reclaim my life. With that being stated I hope to be considered for the scholarship.
Linda Hicks Memorial Scholarship
Growing up in a household plagued by domestic violence and substance abuse has had a profound impact on my life. As a child, I witnessed firsthand the destructive effects of these issues on my family. The constant tension and fear within my home left me feeling anxious and insecure. I often found myself trying to mediate conflicts between my mother and current partner and feeling responsible for their as well as my sibling's well-being. This has shaped how I view relationships and has made me wary of trusting others. It has also affected my mental health, leading to feelings of depression and low self-esteem.
Living in an environment where domestic violence and substance abuse were prevalent also had a significant impact on my academic performance and social interactions. I struggled with focusing on my studies and often felt overwhelmed by the chaos at home. This resulted in poor grades and missed opportunities for academic success. Additionally, I found it difficult to form lasting friendships and struggled with feelings of isolation and shame. I often felt like I was carrying a burden that no one else could understand, which further hindered my ability to connect with others and seek support.
Despite the hardships I have faced, I have used my experiences with domestic violence and substance abuse as a source of strength and motivation. Through therapy and self-reflection, I have learned to recognize and cope with the emotional scars left by my past. I have also become an advocate for victims of domestic violence and substance abuse, using my own story to raise awareness and support others who may be facing similar challenges. While these experiences have undeniably shaped me in countless ways, I have emerged from them with a renewed sense of resilience and determination to create a better future for myself and others.
s a dedicated college student, I intend to utilize the power of education to bring about positive change in the lives of Black women affected by domestic violence. By educating these women on their rights, providing them with resources and support, and empowering them to break the cycle of abuse, I believe that we can make a significant impact on reducing the prevalence of domestic violence in our communities. Through education, we can raise awareness, promote understanding, and ultimately create a more compassionate and equitable society for all individuals. It is my firm belief that by investing in education, we can uplift and empower Black women to assert their agency, reclaim their autonomy, and overcome the destructive effects of domestic violence.

Early Childhood Developmental Trauma Legacy Scholarship
Early childhood development trauma can have lasting and profound consequences on a child's physical, emotional, and cognitive development. Children who experience trauma during their formative years may struggle with self-regulation, social interactions, and academic achievement. They may also be at higher risk for mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. Trauma can impact a child's ability to form secure attachments with caregivers, leading to difficulties in establishing healthy relationships later in life. Additionally, children who experience trauma may exhibit challenging behaviors such as aggression, withdrawal, or impulsivity, which can further contribute to their difficulties in school and their relationships with others.
The consequences of early childhood development trauma can extend into adulthood, affecting a person's ability to navigate relationships, hold a job, and take care of themselves. Adults who experience trauma in childhood may have difficulty regulating their emotions and may be more prone to substance abuse or other risky behaviors. They may also struggle with feelings of worthlessness or inadequacy, stemming from experiences they faced in their early years. Without proper intervention and support, the impact of childhood trauma can continue to have a ripple effect throughout a person's life, leading to a cycle of dysfunction and hardship.

I plan to work closely with children in foster care, schools, and other community settings to provide therapeutic support, advocacy, and resources to help them heal from traumatic experiences. By building trusting relationships, listening to their needs, and empowering them to voice their emotions and fears, I hope to impact their lives positively and help them navigate the complex emotions and challenges that childhood trauma comes with. My dedication and empathy push me, to create a safer and more supportive environment for these vulnerable children.
With my own experience growing up in a neglectful & abusive household was a challenging time in life for me and my siblings. Despite our mothers' inability or desire to provide us with the care and support we needed, as the second oldest I did my best to take care of my younger siblings. I was seven years old, and my biggest sister was eight, but she was a kid. I took the mother’s position, I remember how I would stay up all night trying to make sure we went to school, being upset with myself for falling asleep. After Getting all three of my younger siblings dressed & walking to my grandma’s house because it’s been two days since we’d eaten. With my mom being gone for days at a time.
I don’t know who contacted social services still. Whether it was a neighbor, a stranger, or because we had missed so much school, a social worker and officers showed up one day. It was just me and my siblings, my older sister opened the door and she started crying. They proceeded to ask me questions. I answered truthfully subconsciously hoping they would take us. It was a difficult time for us, we were split up into different guardianships, and my older sister & I were given to our father. I was destroyed and anxious about leaving my younger siblings. For months after they were all I thought about it was a hard adjustment. My father expected me to be a child and go outside to make friends but that wasn’t the case. I was left an antisocial hostile ball of stress that was distrusting of everyone and thing, I changed.

Andrew Michael Peña Memorial Scholarship
My personal educational journey towards obtaining a bachelor’s degree in social work has been both challenging and rewarding. Throughout my studies, I have gained a deep understanding of the complexities of social issues, and I have developed a passion for advocating for those in need. Through my education, I have honed my skills in communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving, which will be essential in my future career as a social worker. I am grateful for the opportunities and growth that my educational journey has provided me, and I am excited to continue making a positive impact in the lives of others.
Throughout my adolescence my mental health had greatly impacted my academic performance and overall well-being. From struggling with anxiety and depression to dealing with overwhelming stress and self-hatred, these mental health issues have presented formidable obstacles that I have had to navigate. Being a young black girl at the time mental health was considered taboo to talk about so I never sought out help. I suffered in silence, closed myself off from my family and the world. Using drugs to mask the intensity of the horribly overwhelming feels of despair. With how my mental health was it became a daily thing resulting in my substance dependency.
Throughout my journey with substance abuse, I have faced numerous challenges that have tested my strength and resilience. One of the biggest hurdles I encountered was the constant battle with my father who made it a habit of saying/calling me horrible things as well as withdrawal symptoms, and the deep feeling of loneliness. These physical and mental aspects made it difficult for me to break free from the cycle of addiction and maintain sobriety. My substances were the only place I found comfort. I thought it was the only way to get rid of what I felt... It was the single thing that kept me going for a long time. It wasn’t until I became pregnant with my daughter that I saw life beyond the moment. That I needed to be better and do better. Tatiana was my savior she started the process of my recovery.
My path to recovery from addiction has been an arduous journey filled with both triumphs and challenges. I have had to confront the underlying issues that led me to seek solace in harmful substances and address them head-on through self-reflection and a lot of research. I have learned healthy coping mechanisms and strategies to resist temptation. It has not been easy but with strength, perseverance, and wanting to be the mother my children deserve. I have been able to gradually bring back balance as well as stability to my life.
Despite the difficulties that bad mental health has posed, I have learned valuable lessons about the importance of prioritizing my mental well-being and seeking help when needed in order to thrive in my academic pursuits and personal life. Each day presents a new opportunity for growth and self-improvement, and I am committed to staying on this path toward a healthier, fulfilling future free from substance abuse for my children and myself.
