RonranGlee Special Needs Teacher Literary Scholarship
I am passionate about the profession of special education teacher because it is rooted in the belief that every student has value, ability, and a voice worth discovering. Special education is not simply about helping students complete assignments or meet academic benchmarks; it is about helping them recognize their own strengths, identity, and potential. Many students with disabilities spend years being defined by what they struggle to do rather than by who they are. A special education teacher has the opportunity to change that narrative by creating an environment where students feel seen, respected, capable, and empowered. Professor Harold Bloom’s statement, “the purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence,” means helping students become aware of their individuality, importance, and ability to influence the world around them. A “sense of presence” is the understanding that one matters, one belongs, and one’s thoughts, feelings, and talents have meaning. For special needs students, especially, this awareness can be transformative. Many have experienced frustration, isolation, or self-doubt. Teaching, therefore, becomes an act of helping students discover confidence, independence, and self-worth. My mission as a special education teacher would be to guide students toward a sense of presence by meeting them where they are academically, emotionally, and socially, while encouraging them to grow beyond the limits others may have placed on them. I would strive to create a classroom built on patience, trust, encouragement, and celebration of progress, no matter how small. Every student learns differently, and I believe effective teaching requires flexibility, creativity, and compassion. I would help students experience their own presence by giving them opportunities to succeed and to express themselves. Some students may communicate through words, others through art, movement, technology, or behavior. My responsibility would be to recognize those forms of communication and ensure students know they are heard. I would focus not only on academic achievement but also on self-advocacy, emotional growth, and life skills. When a student learns to ask for help independently, share an idea confidently, solve a problem, or believe in their own ability, they begin to understand their value and presence in the world. I also believe relationships are central to this mission. Students learn best when they feel safe and respected. I would work to build meaningful connections with students and their families so that the classroom becomes a place where differences are accepted and strengths are celebrated. By fostering inclusion and understanding, I would encourage students to see themselves not as limited, but as individuals capable of growth and contribution. Optional Fairy Tale: Once upon a time, there was a teacher who entered a classroom called the Forest of Hidden Voices. In this forest lived children who believed they were invisible because others only noticed their struggles. Some animals could not speak loudly, some learned slowly, and some were afraid to leave their corners of the woods. The teacher carried no magic wand, only a lantern called Patience. One by one, the teacher visited each child. To the rabbit who feared reading aloud, the teacher whispered, “Your voice deserves to be heard.” To the turtle who learned slowly, the teacher said, “Your pace does not lessen your worth.” To the silent bird who communicated through drawings, the teacher hung every picture proudly upon the trees. Over time, the forest began to change. The children stood taller. They spoke more boldly. They helped one another cross difficult paths. Eventually, the lantern was no longer needed because the forest glowed with the light the children had discovered within themselves. And the teacher realized the greatest lesson of all: the true purpose of teaching was never to make students become someone else, but to help them recognize the strength and presence they already carried inside.

Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
I am pursuing a PhD with the goal of advancing STEM education through research, teaching, and student mentorship. My long-term vision is to create engaging, inclusive learning environments that foster students' confidence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics from diverse backgrounds. I hope to contribute to both academic research and practical educational strategies that improve student learning outcomes and inspire innovation. To achieve these goals, I plan to focus on three major areas: academic research, teaching and mentorship, and professional development. First, I will continue conducting research in STEM education and related interdisciplinary fields. This includes attending conferences, publishing research papers, collaborating with faculty and peers, and developing evidence-based teaching methods. Access to research materials, academic journals, laboratory or computational resources, and conference participation will be essential to support this work. Second, I aim to strengthen my impact as an educator by working directly with students through mentoring, tutoring, workshops, and classroom instruction. I plan to design interactive learning experiences that help students connect theoretical concepts with real-world applications. Resources such as educational software, teaching materials, outreach opportunities, and student-support programs will help me expand these initiatives and improve accessibility in STEM learning. Third, I will continue building professional skills that support leadership and long-term career success. This includes improving communication skills, gaining experience in curriculum development, learning advanced research methodologies, and participating in professional organizations. Networking opportunities and mentorship from experienced educators and researchers will play a critical role in my professional growth. My timeline involves completing my PhD coursework and research milestones over the next several years while actively participating in teaching and outreach opportunities. In the short term, I plan to focus on academic excellence, research productivity, and student engagement. In the long term, I aim to pursue a career in academia or educational research, where I can continue mentoring students, conduct impactful research, and contribute to STEM education reform. To support these goals, I anticipate expenses related to tuition, research materials, conference travel, software tools, books, and professional training. A reasonable budget would include funding for research activities, conference attendance, educational resources, and technology required for teaching and data analysis. Financial support through scholarships, grants, assistantships, and institutional resources will be important in ensuring steady progress toward these objectives. I understand that achieving these goals requires flexibility and careful planning. Challenges such as balancing research, teaching responsibilities, and financial limitations may arise, but I plan to address them through effective time management, collaboration, and continuous learning. By staying committed to my academic and educational mission, I hope to make a meaningful contribution to STEM education and positively impact the students and communities I serve.
    Tawkify Meaningful Connections Scholarship
One of the most meaningful influences in my life has been my family and the mentorship I have found in the philosophy and guidance of Daisaku Ikeda, whom I regard as a mentor. His teachings on courage, compassion, education, and the value of each individual have deeply shaped who I am today and how I approach relationships with others. A defining experience in my life was losing my father at a young age. Losing a parent early in life created emotional challenges and moments of uncertainty that affected me deeply growing up. At a young age, it was difficult to fully understand grief and loss, but over time, I realized how much that experience shaped my understanding of resilience, family, and human connection. Losing my father taught me not to take relationships for granted and made me more aware of how important encouragement and emotional support can be in someone’s life. During difficult periods of my life, the guidance of my mentor, Ikeda Sensei, became a source of strength and direction. Through his writings and encouragement, I learned that hardships need not define a person negatively. Instead, challenges can become opportunities to develop wisdom, compassion, and inner strength. His belief that every individual possesses dignity and limitless potential inspired me to continue pursuing growth even during moments of doubt or difficulty. Ikeda Sensei’s philosophy of humanistic education has especially influenced the way I build relationships with others. He teaches that education is not simply about academic success, but about becoming someone who contributes positively to society and encourages others to believe in themselves. This perspective has shaped how I interact with people in both personal and professional settings. I try to approach others with empathy, patience, and respect because I understand that many people carry struggles that may not be visible to others. My experience teaching at a special education school further strengthened these values. Working closely with students with diverse learning and developmental needs taught me the importance of individualized support, compassion, and encouragement. Every student had unique strengths and challenges, and I learned how meaningful it can be when someone feels understood and valued. These experiences reinforced my belief that authentic relationships are built through listening, trust, and genuine care for others. Relationships play a central role in both my personal and professional goals because meaningful change is created through connection and encouragement. Whether within families, schools, or communities, supportive relationships help people develop confidence and resilience. I hope to continue building relationships that uplift others and create positive environments where individuals feel respected and empowered. In today’s increasingly technology-driven world, maintaining authentic human connections is more important than ever. While technology allows people to communicate instantly, true connection still depends on empathy, dialogue, and presence. One of the lessons I value most from Ikeda Sensei is the importance of sincerely encouraging even one person, because that encouragement can have a lasting impact on someone’s life. Ultimately, the loss of my father, the strength of my family, and the mentorship I found through Ikeda Sensei’s philosophy have all shaped the person I am today. These experiences taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of creating value through education, relationships, and service to others. As I continue pursuing my goals, I hope to positively impact others in the same way that encouragement and mentorship have impacted me.
Special Needs Advocacy Inc. Kathleen Lehman Memorial Scholarship
I am passionate about creating inclusive and supportive environments where individuals with special needs are treated with dignity, respect, and equal opportunity. Throughout my educational and professional experiences, I have come to understand that many individuals with disabilities face barriers not because of their limitations, but because society is not always structured to meet their needs. These experiences have inspired me to pursue a career dedicated to advocacy, accessibility, education, and compassionate service. One of the most meaningful experiences in my journey was teaching at a special education school. Working directly with students who had diverse learning, developmental, and behavioral needs profoundly shaped my understanding of patience, empathy, and individualized support. Every student I worked with had unique strengths, talents, and learning styles. This experience taught me that success looks different for every individual and that progress should be measured with understanding and compassion rather than comparison. Teaching in a special education environment also helped me appreciate the resilience and determination of students and their families. I witnessed firsthand how important encouragement, consistency, and support can be in helping students build confidence and independence. Many students overcame challenges that others may not fully recognize or understand, yet they continued to persevere with incredible strength. Their persistence inspired me and reinforced my desire to work in a field where I can continue supporting individuals with special needs. In my future career, I hope to make a positive social impact by helping individuals with special needs gain access to quality education, healthcare, social services, and community support. I want to contribute to programs that empower individuals to reach their full potential, develop independence, and feel valued within society. I also hope to advocate for policies and practices that promote inclusion and accessibility in schools, workplaces, and public spaces. In addition to direct service, I believe education and awareness are essential for creating lasting social change. Many misconceptions still exist regarding disabilities and special needs, which can lead to stigma or exclusion. I hope to use my career to help educate others about the importance of empathy, inclusion, and equal opportunity. Small changes in communication, accommodations, and understanding can significantly improve someone’s quality of life and sense of belonging. Ultimately, my goal is to build a career centered on compassion, service, and advocacy. My experience teaching at a special education school taught me to appreciate the value of every individual and the importance of meeting people where they are. Through dedication, patience, and continued learning, I hope to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals with special needs while helping create a more inclusive and supportive society for everyone.
