For my sixteenth birthday, I asked my parents for a project car. A car that I could convert from a gas engine to a diesel engine. I was able to raise some of the funds needed with smart investments in stocks and selling parts of the car that I didn't need. Going to the junkyard with my father has always been something that I enjoyed. Our trips now had a focus as we looked for the proper frame and other important parts for my build. This has been a challenge and has required me to do research but I am enjoying the process. I know that I am lucky to have a father that supports my passion because neither of us has a strong knowledge of diesel engines. The build is taking longer than I thought it would. There have been setbacks. There have been times when things continued to go wrong after days of troubleshooting issues. The financial aspect has been more than I estimated. However, this experience has shown me that I have what it takes to work hard for what I want. This experience has shown me that I have perseverance. I have seen that I have a business mind and the ability to make budgeting decisions. I have learned through this process that I am gaining additional skills. Selling parts on Facebook has allowed me to experience some parts of customer service and marketing. I also have gained a new respect for education. Youtube is very helpful and informative but it is not a replacement for formal education. I am more excited than ever to start school. I want to learn and grow as a mechanic and businessman. Ohio Technical College has an additional option that many other trade schools don't have. They have the option for me to get my associate degree. I intend to take advantage of this option. The hands-on learning paired with the associate program will give me a solid foundation to help me reach my dreams. My parents have been married for 25 years. My father was not able to complete his college education. However, he has become a business owner and gave me the courage to follow my dreams. He works hard to make sure we have a better start to adult life than he did. My mother is a social worker who also supports my dreams and goals. Because of the love and support they show I want more than anything to make them proud.
