My name is Dean Anthony Telada, and I am a nursing student at the Arizona College of Nursing – Las Vegas campus with an interest in critical care nursing. I stay actively involved in leadership and service opportunities within my program and the nursing community. I currently serve as Treasurer of the Student Nurses Association and Director of Communications for the Nevada Nursing Students' Association. I also serve as a Peer Mentor and Student Ambassador for the Social Scrub Squad, where I enjoy supporting students and helping build campus connection.
Outside of school, I work as a singer and gondolier at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas, where I have developed strong communication skills and an appreciation for connecting with people from many different backgrounds. Balancing work, academics, and service has strengthened my discipline, resilience, and commitment to compassionate care.

My name is Dean Anthony, and I attend the Arizona College of Nursing Las Vegas campus.
For many patients with disabilities, the most difficult part of a healthcare visit is not always the illness itself, but the struggle to be heard. Communication barriers, inaccessible systems, and limited disability training among healthcare providers can leave patients feeling overlooked and misunderstood. Despite the nursing profession’s commitment to patient-centered practice, individuals with disabilities continue to experience disparities in communication and overall healthcare outcomes. Strengthening disability-inclusive care is an important area for growth within the nursing profession because every patient deserves to feel respected, involved, and fully understood throughout their healthcare experience. When communication needs are not met, trust can be damaged, treatment plans may be misunderstood, and patients may feel isolated during times when they are most vulnerable.
My passion for this issue stems from my own experiences as someone who is hard of hearing. Growing up and navigating school and healthcare settings with a hearing disability gave me a firsthand understanding of how easily communication gaps can occur. Simple moments that others may overlook, such as missing important instructions, struggling to follow conversations, or feeling hesitant to ask for clarification, can create frustration and discouragement. Being a student with a disability has filled me with an incredible amount of drive and passion to one day be the change for the young patient I once needed. This journey shaped my perspective and motivated me to pursue a career where I can advocate for patients who may feel unheard. It has also shown me that disabilities do not limit leadership, as I have been trusted to serve as Treasurer of my campus Student Nurses’ Association and Director of Communications for the Nevada Nursing Student Association, representing student nurses at the state level. With the leadership skills I have developed, I plan to educate and inspire my colleagues and coworkers on the importance of accessibility and inclusive communication so that every patient feels respected and understood.
As a future nurse, I plan to contribute by providing compassionate care, advocating for inclusive communication, and showing patients that challenges do not have to limit their future. I will take the time to ensure patients understand their care, ask what accommodations would best support them, and create an environment where they feel comfortable speaking up about their needs. Through my journey and role within the profession, I will demonstrate that disabilities do not define ability, but can instead cultivate resilience and strength. I want future students with disabilities to see that there is a place for them in nursing and that their experiences can become valuable strengths in caring for others. By leading through example and remaining committed to excellence, I will help create a profession where more people feel seen, valued, represented, and empowered.
