Giving back to others has always been important to me, not just as something I do, but as part of who I am. I believe service is about showing up for people, creating opportunities where there may not be many, and helping communities move toward healing and justice. As an undergraduate student, I actively seek out ways to serve through volunteering, research, and community involvement. One of the most meaningful ways I currently give back is through my participation in a research project titled Using Participatory Science to Track Environmental Change and Justice in the City of Greensboro. This project focuses on involving community members directly in research to better understand environmental changes and injustices that affect their neighborhoods. Being part of this work has shown me how powerful it is when people are included in conversations and research that impact their own lives. Instead of communities being overlooked, their voices and experiences are centered. Through this project, I have gained a deeper understanding of how environmental issues connect to health, access to resources, and overall quality of life especially for marginalized communities. This experience has strengthened my passion for service and affirmed my desire to work at the intersection of research, justice, and community support. Knowing that my work contributes to positive change, even on a small scale, motivates me to continue serving others through both academics and action. In addition to research, I volunteer through school and faith based spaces like my church where I assist with organizing events, supporting group activities, and participating in outreach efforts. These experiences have taught me that service does not always look the same it can mean leading, supporting, listening, or simply being present. What matters most is consistency and genuine care for the people you are serving. Looking toward the future, I plan to expand my impact by creating a nonprofit organization focused on supporting single mothers and their children, particularly within underserved communities. My goal is to provide access to mental health resources, mentorship, and educational support to help families break cycles of trauma and instability. As someone majoring in psychology, I am especially passionate about mental health advocacy and making care more accessible to those who need it most. My “Pie in the Sky” goal is to start a nonprofit organization that supports single mothers and their children, mainly those navigating the challenges of absent, abusive, or struggling parents. I want to create a safe space where single mothers can access mental health resources, counseling, mentorship, and educational support to break cycles of trauma and build stronger, healthier lives. This dream feels both inspiring and just out of reach because it requires practical skills, funding, and community but I am committed to it. This dream came from my own experiences growing up in a household where mental health struggles were present. Watching my mother navigate a toxic relationship with my father, who battled depression and alcoholism, I often saw how alone she felt and the shame she carried. It was clear how heavy it was for her to face these challenges without the right support, and I realized that if she had access to resources, guidance, and a supportive community, it wouldn’t have been so hard. That experience inspired me to want to create a space where other single mothers can get the help and encouragement they need, so they don’t have to feel alone or ashamed while trying to provide for their families. To take steps toward this goal, I am committed to my education in psychology. I am pursuing a bachelor’s degree at North Carolina A&T with plans to earn a Ph.D. in behavioral psychology or abnormal psychology. This will help me gain the knowledge to understand trauma, behavioral patterns, and effective mental health interventions. Beyond academics, I am seeking internships, mentorship, and leadership opportunities that strengthen my skills in counseling, event planning, and community engagement. For example, I have started a Bible study group with other young women where we meet weekly to support each other, discuss personal challenges, and encourage growth while seeking God and finding guidance through Him. Leading this group has taught me how to organize, communicate, and mentor others, all of the skills that I know will be important when running my nonprofit. I am also working on creating a devotional for young women at my church, which has been exciting because I get to think about real life challenges and how God can help us grow through them, while sharing encouragement and hope with others. Additionally I am part of a research project focused on using participatory science to track environmental change and justice, which is helping me develop analytical and collaborative skills that will be valuable in building and managing programs for my nonprofit. Additionally, in Decemeber of 2025 I interned with a church leader on the marketing team, helping plan events and create outreach materials. This experience has given me hands on skills in organizing, coordinating, and connecting with a community. With my studies and faith, these experiences are helping me build the foundation I need to accomplish my dreams. Overall, my “Pie in the Sky” goal is about creating a ripple effect: helping mothers heal, childrens succeed, and families build stronger futures. Even though this dream feels huge, I’m taking steps every day to prepare me. This scholarship would help me keep moving forward in my education and start building a nonprofit that gives women and kids the support that they need.

Mental health has always been personal to me. Growing up, I watched my mom quietly struggle with depression while being in an abusive relationship with my dad, who had untreated mental health issues and alcohol addiction. Seeing this at such a young age showed me how serious untreated mental health can be. I learned that mental illness doesn’t only affect one person, it affects families and everyone around them. My dad’s struggles with mental health and unresolved trauma showed up as anger and unhealthy behavior. I later realized that much of this came from his own childhood trauma. His pain didn’t just affect him; it deeply impacted my mom, my sisters, and me. Because of this, I saw how many families suffer in silence when mental health issues are ignored, unaddressed, or stigmatized. One of the main ways I’ve supported others is by starting a women’s Bible study group for young adult women. I noticed that many of my friends were dealing with depression, anxiety, family problems, insecurities, and loneliness, but we often talked about these struggles privately or kept them to ourselves. Many of us felt like we had to hide our feelings so we wouldn’t be a burden to others. I created the Bible study to give us a safe space to be honest. Starting this group helped us grow closer to each other and to God. We learned that we don’t have to struggle with mental health alone and that having mental health challenges doesn’t make us weak or “weird.” Some girls even felt encouraged to start therapy. Through this, I learned the power of listening, validating others, showing up consistently, and encouraging people to talk about their feelings. I am currently an undergraduate psychology major and plan to pursue a Ph.D. in psychology. My long term goal is to support individuals and families affected by trauma and mental health challenges and to start a nonprofit that provides mental health resources, mentorship, and emotional support to single mothers and their children, especially in Black communities.

As a Black woman pursuing a degree in psychology, my identity has been shaped by my life experiences that exposed me to mental health struggles, generational trauma, and systemic inequities. Growing up, I witnessed my mother in a toxic relationship and the emotional weight that came with it, and the silence around mental health. These experiences didn’t just influence my perspective; they gave me a sense of responsibility to understand why these patterns exist and how they can be broken. Many times, my father would beat on my mother, and I would see this happening. As I got older, I saw the generational abuse of women on my dad's side. But I also knew my dad had been through a lot of traumatic things growing up that played some part in his abuse and alcoholism. Many times, the police were called, but there was only so much they did. It made me feel like my situation didn’t matter and that my family would never get help. Because what would happen when my dad came back and did the same thing? Too many women in domestic situations don’t get help until they are no longer here. It’s so sad, but it’s the truth. Choosing psychology as my major was a direct response to what I saw and felt. As I got older, I saw how so many people knew about the abuse that my mom was going through but never thought to help. It hurt seeing my mom deal with depression while having to raise three kids alone. Through these traumatic experiences, I understood how untreated trauma and ignored mental health and abuse in minority communities not only affect families but generations to come. These life experiences inspired me to become a psychologist to break these cycles in minority communities. My long term goal is to earn a Ph.D. in psychology and establish a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting single Black mothers and their children. I want to create a space where families affected by abuse, absent parents, and untreated trauma are not overlooked, but supported with accessible mental health education, counseling resources, and mentorship. Too often, help is only offered when families reach a breaking point; my goal is to address mental health proactively and provide support before cycles of trauma continue. My identity and lived experiences will continue to shape the way I serve others. As a future psychologist and nonprofit founder, I plan to provide care that recognizes how faith, family dynamics, and systemic barriers all connect with mental health in minority communities. I want to serve individuals who may feel unseen or misunderstood in traditional mental health spaces or can’t afford therapy and offer care that is rooted in both professional knowledge and genuine empathy. Having witnessed trauma firsthand, I understand that it’s deeper than just being ignored and moving on with life because it sticks with you forever. This scholarship would allow me to continue pursuing my education with greater focus and stability while working toward a future centered on service and impact. I am driven by more than personal success; I am committed to changing outcomes for families who deserve access to healing, support, and hope. The path I am on was shaped by painful experiences, but I am determined to transform those experiences into purpose and meaningful change for future generations.

One of the biggest obstacles I’ve faced in pursuing higher education is the financial challenge of paying tuition as the child of a single parent. My mom raises three kids on her own, and sometimes I honestly do not know if I can continue in school because the costs feel overwhelming. There are moments when it seems impossible to cover everything, including tuition, books, and living expenses, but God has shown up every time to provide a way. Whether it is through scholarships, guidance from my professors, or unexpected opportunities, I have learned to trust Him and keep pushing forward, even when the future feels uncertain. Each time I face a financial hurdle, I am reminded that God’s timing and provision are perfect and that perseverance and faith go hand in hand. My mom has been my biggest source of motivation. As the only parent I have and raising three children, she works tirelessly to provide for us, and seeing her dedication inspires me to make the most of every opportunity. Her sacrifices remind me that my education is not just for me, but also for her and for my siblings, to honor the hard work she puts in every day. Her support, combined with encouragement from mentors and professors at North Carolina A&T, has been instrumental in helping me stay focused on my education and my goals in psychology and research. Their guidance has opened doors to scholarships and research programs that allow me to continue pursuing my dreams despite financial obstacles. Facing these challenges has taught me resilience, faith, and the importance of perseverance. It is not just about getting through difficult times, it is about growing stronger, staying disciplined, and using every opportunity to prepare for a future where I can make a real impact. In STEM-related areas of psychology, like research and statistics, staying in school is crucial to gaining the knowledge and skills I need to support Black families, especially single mothers and their children, and to address mental health disparities in our community. Every course I take, every project I complete, and every research opportunity I pursue is a step closer to achieving that vision. Overcoming financial obstacles has also deepened my understanding of the importance of access and equity in education. Many BIPOC students face similar struggles, and I am determined to use my education and future career to create more opportunities for others in similar situations. I want to show younger students, especially those from single-parent households, that it is possible to achieve your dreams with faith, determination, and the support of your community. This scholarship would help me continue my studies without the constant stress of finances, giving me the freedom to focus on research, leadership, and preparing for a career where I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Most importantly, it would be another way God shows me that He always provides, even when the path seems uncertain. What’s a real-world issue you feel deeply connected to, and why? I feel deeply connected to the mental health crisis in underserved communities, particularly within Black families. The lack of accessible, affordable mental health resources contributes to cycles of trauma, instability, and poverty. Growing up, I witnessed my mom navigate a toxic relationship with my suicidal dad while trying to protect me and my sisters. These experiences opened my eyes to the pain many families face behind closed doors and how much they could benefit from counseling and support. 3. If you had the power to make change in that area, what would you do? If I had the power to make change, I would build an organization that offers free or low-cost therapy for single mothers and their children, mentorship programs for youth, and workshops on emotional resilience and financial literacy. I envision creating safe spaces where families can heal and thrive. My long-term goal is to scale this initiative nationally, partnering with schools, churches, and community centers to make mental health care a norm rather than a luxury. 4. How did you choose your area of study, and what do you hope to do with it? I chose psychology because of what I witnessed growing up. The trauma I saw in my own household—living with an abusive father and watching the emotional toll it took on my mom—changed the way I understood mental health. I saw firsthand how untreated trauma and toxic relationships can impact a family, especially children. Those experiences pushed me to want to be a solution, to create spaces where people can heal instead of hurt. My goal is to earn a Ph.D. in psychology and specialize in behavioral or abnormal psychology so I can help individuals break cycles of abuse and trauma. I want to take that knowledge and create a nonprofit that provides therapy, mentorship, and educational resources for single mothers and their children. Studying psychology allows me to turn my pain into purpose and help others rewrite their stories. 5. How has education helped you better understand yourself and your purpose? Education has shown me the power of knowledge as a tool for liberation. Every psychology class I’ve taken has reinforced my passion for mental health and my desire to break generational cycles of trauma. Education hasn’t just prepared me for a career—it has helped me understand my “why.” My purpose is bigger than me; it’s about creating opportunities for others to heal and succeed. 6. How has your identity as a woman influenced the way you move through the world? As a Black woman, I’ve learned to turn obstacles into motivation. Society often underestimates women—especially women of color—but instead of letting that discourage me, I use it as fuel. Growing up, I noticed how mental health struggles in Black families are often ignored or dismissed, which leads to generational trauma being passed down. Women in particular are expected to carry the weight of everyone else while neglecting their own well-being. That reality drives me to change the narrative. I want to normalize conversations about mental health among women of color and provide resources that help families heal instead of passing pain from one generation to the next. Being a woman in higher education, I feel a responsibility to represent resilience and possibility. I want other young women to see that despite challenges, their dreams are valid and achievable. 7. What does leadership mean to you—and how have you embodied it? Leadership means taking initiative and creating spaces where others feel supported. I’ve shown this by shadowing a clinical psychologist, starting research on generational trauma, and planning to launch a campus organization this semester focused on mental health awareness, community discussions, and peer support. I also volunteer regularly at my church and lead Bible studies on campus, with plans to host more at my grandmother’s Christian bookstore this summer. These experiences have helped me develop skills in organizing, guiding, and inspiring others while turning ideas into action. 8. Describe a time you had to be resourceful or resilient. What did you learn from it? When my family faced financial and emotional hardships after my mom’s fiancé was shot and left permanently disabled, I learned what resilience truly means. Despite this traumatic event, I kept my GPA at 3.93, made the Chancellor’s List, and stayed focused on my goals. I leaned on faith, therapy, and community to stay grounded. This taught me that adversity doesn’t define me—it strengthens me. 9. If awarded this scholarship, how would it help you pursue your dreams? Receiving this scholarship would be life-changing. It would ease the financial burden on my family and allow me to focus more on academics, research, and building my vision. Most importantly, it would be an investment not just in me, but in the communities I plan to serve. With your support, I can continue on the path to becoming a psychologist, creating programs that provide mental health access to families who need it most.

Mental health isn’t just something I study—it’s something I’ve lived through and still navigate today. It’s shaped how I see the world, how I show up in relationships, and what I want to do with my life. What really pushed me toward psychology was everything my family went through living with my dad. My father was abusive and struggled with serious mental health issues that were never treated. That affected my mom, my sisters, and me in ways I didn’t fully understand at the time. But now, looking back, I see the damage untreated mental illness can cause—not just to the person struggling, but to everyone around them. There were nights filled with chaos, fear, and pain. I remember moments when my sisters and I would cry in our rooms because we didn’t know what else to do. One of the scariest nights was when my dad tried to take my mother’s life. He was also suicidal. At times, we never knew what we were walking into. But by the grace of God, we survived. It could’ve been the end of our family, but somehow—honestly, because of God—we made it out. My mom is one of the strongest women I know. Even when things felt impossible, she kept praying. She showed us what it means to have faith when your world is falling apart. That faith carried us. We didn’t have a lot, but we had each other and we had God. Looking back, I realize how much strength it took for my mom to raise us in that kind of environment. She planted seeds in me even when I didn’t see them growing. I was raised in church. I sang, listened to the Word, and believed in God. But once I hit high school, things started shifting. My mental health started to decline. I dealt with low self-esteem, sadness, and isolation. I didn’t have the words for it then—I just knew I didn’t feel right. That’s when I began to drift from God. I still believed, but I wasn’t connected. I was moving through life with so much internal pain that I never really let out. Sophomore year was one of the lowest points in my life. I got into a toxic and emotionally abusive relationship. It mirrored my parents’ relationship in so many ways, and yet I stayed because I didn’t feel worthy of more. That relationship consumed me. I stopped going to school regularly, distanced myself from my friends, and started changing in ways I didn’t even notice at first. I wasn’t the same girl anymore. I stopped showing up for my sisters. I wasn’t as present for my mom. I felt empty. I started smoking weed just to escape from my thoughts and emotions. I didn’t know how to cope or how to ask for help. That time made me realize how important mental health really is. I wasn’t okay, and no one really knew. It opened my eyes to how many people are silently going through the same thing. That’s when psychology became more than just an interest. It became a purpose. Leaving for college was like a reset. I moved eight hours away from home, with no family around. It was scary, but it was the beginning of everything changing. I knew I couldn’t do it alone. I needed God. That’s when my faith started growing again. I don’t think it was random that I ended up at the school I’m at. God placed me there intentionally. He surrounded me with people who truly love Him—Christian friends who poured into me, prayed with me, and helped me rebuild. Together, we started a Bible study group called Faith Within. I led a few Bible studies, and those moments brought me peace, joy, and purpose. It felt like I was stepping into something greater. I wasn’t just learning about God—I was walking with Him. I began to feel whole again. I started caring for myself better, being more present, and letting go of the shame I had been carrying for years. I also started using my story to encourage others. Now, I’m a psychology major, working toward becoming a psychologist who serves young women and families like mine. I want to help people process trauma, navigate emotions, and heal from pain that’s been buried for years. I’ve lived it—I know what it’s like to pretend everything’s fine when it’s not. I want to be a safe space for others, especially young girls who are often overlooked and misunderstood. Mental health is personal to me. It’s not just about textbooks or diagnoses—it’s about people. Real people. People who are trying to survive, love, forgive, and grow. In the future, I plan to start a nonprofit that supports single mothers and their children. I want to create a space where moms can get counseling, support, and resources, and where kids can have mentors, mental health support, and a place to feel seen. I know what it’s like to grow up with pain in the household and no safe space to talk about it. I want to help change that cycle—for families, for generations. God has been with me through it all. Even when I felt like I had nothing left to give, He kept reminding me that I was made for more. Every time I almost gave up, He showed up. He used my brokenness and turned it into something beautiful. And I know He’s not done. That’s what gives me hope. The verse “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” means so much to me now. I used to read it and think it was just about spreading the Gospel, but I see now that it’s also about how God uses us—flawed, human us—to reach others. When I chose to follow Him, He started reshaping my whole life. He gave me purpose. Psychology became the “net” He placed in my hands. I’m using it to reach the hurting, the overlooked, the misunderstood. Not for my glory, but for His. I’m following Him—not perfectly, but fully. And in doing that, I’ve found healing, strength, and a future I never thought I’d have. Every part of my story—good/bad—was preparation. And now, I’m ready to serve others, not just as a future mental health professional, but as someone who truly understands what it’s like to feel lost and found again. Mental health is my passion, but it’s also my ministry. It’s the way I serve, love, and lift others. And with God leading me, I know I’ll be able to change lives—just like He changed mine.

My goal is to earn my Ph.D. and use my education to support and uplift communities that have been overlooked and underserved for far too long. One of my biggest dreams is to create a nonprofit organization for single Black mothers and their children, especially those impacted by domestic violence or absent fathers. I want to offer therapy, mentorship, and educational tools to help break cycles of trauma and create a space where families can feel safe and supported. My vision is to combine mental health care with empowerment because people need more than just healing, they need hope and opportunities to grow. At A&T, I’ve been doing more than just attending classes. I’m learning how to lead, serve, and grow in faith. I’ve led Bible study this past semester, where I planned the topic, studied the scriptures, and guided discussion. I’m also applying to serve as vice president of one of the Bible study groups on campus. This summer, I’ll be helping lead Bible studies at my grandma’s Christian bookstore, where she’s been a pillar in our community for years. These experiences have deepened my passion for helping others heal spiritually, emotionally, and mentally. Willie Mae Rawls’ story reminds me a lot of my grandma, strong, faith-filled, and dedicated to uplifting her family. I want to carry that same spirit into everything I do. This scholarship would not only help relieve some of the financial pressure of being an out of state student, but it would also allow me to keep pouring into my education, faith, and future nonprofit work. Growing up in a generation that is often far from the Lord and attending a large HBCU as an out-of-state student has truly tested my faith in ways I never anticipated. Being in college, I am constantly faced with challenges and worldly experiences that could easily lead me astray. However, my relationship with God has been my anchor, helping me navigate these situations with strength and clarity. Knowing God and what His Word says allows me to stay grounded in my morals and values. Temptations are everywhere, but because of my faith, I am able to avoid the things that go against what I believe in, such as engaging in behaviors that would pull me away from my purpose. Scriptures like 1 Corinthians 10:13, which says, "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it," remind me to trust in God's guidance even in moments of difficulty. One of the greatest lessons I've learned is why God calls us to live with love, kindness, and patience. Ephesians 4:32 reminds us to “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” These principles have shaped how I interact with others, even in challenging situations. They have also taught me the value of waiting, whether it’s waiting for the right relationship or for blessings to unfold in God’s perfect timing, as seen in Isaiah 40:31: “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” As I pursue a career in psychology, I see many ways in which my faith will play a role. Faith helps me understand people not just as physical beings but as spiritual ones, which allows me to provide holistic care to my future clients. This perspective is particularly valuable for clients who are guided by their faith because it helps them feel fully understood and supported in their journey. My faith also teaches me to approach every person with love, kindness, and patience, creating a safe and supportive environment where clients can feel valued as individuals. In addition, faith gives me a strong moral compass that will guide me in making ethical decisions, ensuring that I handle complex situations with integrity and compassion. Growing up, I witnessed her struggles—both external and internal. While she battled depression and carried the weight of the world on her shoulders, she never let it affect her role as a mother. She hid her pain so well that, as a child, I didn’t fully understand the depth of what she was going through. Looking back, I now see the incredible strength it took for her to wake up every day, go to work, care for us, and face the challenges life threw her way, all while managing her mental health. Her resilience is the reason I am who I am today. Watching her navigate life’s challenges with grace and determination inspired me to pursue a career in psychology. I want to help people like my mom—individuals who are silently battling mental health issues while carrying the weight of their families and communities. Mental health is a topic that remains underrepresented in the Black community. Too often, struggles with depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions are dismissed or stigmatized. My mother’s story has taught me that these struggles are real and that there is strength in seeking help and healing. This inspiration has shaped my career goals. I plan to earn a doctorate in psychology and establish a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting single Black mothers. My vision is to provide them with access to mental health resources, counseling, and community support, recognizing that their well-being is essential not only for themselves but also for the children they are raising. My mom has shown me what it means to be a true leader. A leader doesn’t have to be perfect—they just have to show up, push through the hard times, and inspire others through their actions. She is proof that even in the darkest moments, there is hope, resilience, and the potential for a better future. Her strength has left an indelible mark on my life, and I hope to carry her legacy forward by helping others find their strength, just as she found hers.

My name is Davine Valentine, and my journey through college has been a testament to the power of faith. When I decided to attend North Carolina A&T State University, I was taking a leap of faith. I moved seven and a half hours away from home to a place where I knew no one—not even a friend. The decision was a big one, and I had no idea what to expect, but I trusted that God had a plan for me. Leaving home was difficult. It meant stepping away from the comfort of my family and the familiarity of my small town. At times, the fear of the unknown seemed overwhelming. I wondered if I had made the right choice, or if I would be able to thrive in this new environment. Arriving at a large HBCU brought its own set of challenges. I was exposed to many new ideas, different people, and worldly temptations that I had never encountered before. It would have been easy to get swept up in the excitement of college life, but I knew I had to remain focused on my faith and relationship with God. Throughout this experience, I learned to rely on God more than ever. I made the conscious decision to stay true to my values, even when there were pressures to do otherwise. I stayed committed to my relationship with God by maintaining regular prayer and reflection, and by seeking out Christian communities on campus to support me. I was involved in Bible study groups, and I found peace in knowing that I wasn’t walking this path alone. My faith reminded me that no matter how far I was from home, God was always with me, guiding me through every challenge. One of the most impactful lessons I’ve learned through this faith walk is the importance of trusting God’s plan, even when things seem uncertain. Moving to a new place, where everything was unfamiliar, was a test of my courage and belief in God’s promises. But as time passed, I grew more confident and found a stronger sense of belonging. Despite my efforts, the cost of higher education remains a challenge. This obstacle has taught me to be resourceful, determined, and proactive. By seeking scholarships, budgeting wisely, and maintaining a strong academic record, I am committed to graduating debt-free while achieving academic excellence. Through this journey, I have learned that challenges are not just barriers; they are opportunities for growth. My experiences have fueled my passion for helping underserved communities, particularly Black families, to access the mental health resources and educational opportunities they need to thrive. Since then, I’ve focused on improving my time management skills, ensuring that I can balance my academic and personal commitments effectively. 6.) Describe your greatest strengths. My greatest strengths include empathy, problem-solving, and determination. I’m deeply empathetic, which allows me to connect with others on a personal level and offer support when they need it most. I also take pride in my ability to solve problems creatively, finding solutions even in challenging situations. Additionally, I am highly determined and persistent. When I set a goal, I remain committed to achieving it, regardless of the obstacles I face.

Growing up, I’ve always had a strong desire to help others, whether through volunteering or offering support to my peers. I strive to approach leadership with the mindset of serving those around me. For example, I’ve been actively involved in volunteer work throughout my life, including working at a food bank, helping to create care packages for the homeless, and participating in Christmas drives to provide food and gifts for families in need. In each of these roles, I focused on serving with humility, understanding that the work was bigger than me and that my efforts could make a lasting impact. I aim to ensure that those I serve feel valued and supported, which aligns with my broader goal of empowering individuals, especially in underserved communities. Additionally, I embody servant leadership in my academic and professional life. I aim to uplift my peers by offering help when needed and creating a sense of community and trust. As I work toward my goal of earning a Ph.D. in psychology, I hope to continue leading by example, especially in the realm of mental health, where many individuals still lack the support they need. 2) Attribute I Need to Improve: “Dare to Take Calculated Risks” While I have made strides in certain areas, I recognize that I need to improve in the attribute of “daring to take calculated risks.” I’ve always valued security and comfort, which has led me to avoid risks, even when I know they could lead to growth. Coming to college, over seven hours away from home, was one of the biggest risks I’ve taken, and it has forced me to step out of my comfort zone. Although I’ve grown in many ways, I still find myself hesitant to take risks that could lead to significant changes in my academic or personal life. For example, I often hold back from pursuing leadership opportunities or challenging projects because I fear failure or uncertainty. My goal is to earn a Ph.D. in psychology with a focus on mental health, especially for underserved communities, and to start a nonprofit to support Black families who are dealing with mental health challenges. I know that achieving this will require me to take calculated risks—whether that’s applying for competitive internships, seeking leadership roles, or making bold decisions that push me outside my comfort zone. To improve in this area, I plan to start by taking small, manageable risks. I will seek out leadership opportunities in student organizations and take on projects that challenge me. By gradually taking on more risks, I hope to build my confidence in making bigger decisions that align with my larger goals. Additionally, I will look for mentorship from individuals who have successfully navigated risks in their careers, especially in psychology and nonprofit work. By learning from their experiences, I will gain the courage and insight to take actions that will lead to personal growth and help me accomplish my goal of creating a nonprofit focused on mental health support for Black families. Ultimately, I understand that growth comes from discomfort, and I am ready to embrace that discomfort to achieve my goals. By daring to take calculated risks, I believe I will unlock new opportunities and move closer to realizing my aspirations.

Starting my journey at North Carolina A&T State University has been like finding a place I didn’t know I was missing. Coming from a predominantly white high school, I often felt out of place, like I was straddling two worlds without fully belonging to either. I longed for a space where I could feel at ease in my identity as a young Black woman where I could connect with others who understood my background, my goals, and my challenges. At A&T, I’ve finally found that place. Here, I’m surrounded by people who not only look like me but who share similar experiences, struggles, and ambitions. For the first time, I feel completely at home. Being a student at A&T is more than just earning a degree; it means embracing my identity within a community that fosters support, understanding, and empowerment. A&T offers a unique culture where everyone is genuinely invested in each other’s success. Whether it’s faculty members who go the extra mile or classmates who cheer each other on, the atmosphere here is one of unity and acceptance. This university doesn’t just provide an education; it nurtures the whole person. I feel fortunate to be part of such a welcoming environment where everyone has a place. This sense of belonging and support inspires me to carry A&T’s values forward. The university has taught me about resilience, integrity, and the importance of lifting others as I climb. These values extend beyond academics; they define how I want to live and lead. As I move through my academic journey and beyond, I plan to embody these lessons, staying grounded, compassionate, and committed to making a difference in my community. My future goals are deeply personal. I’m determined to pursue a Ph.D. in psychology, with a focus on either behavioral or abnormal psychology. My own experiences growing up in a household with an absent and abusive father have shaped my passion for this field. I want to establish a nonprofit organization that supports single Black mothers and their children, offering resources and a safe haven for those facing similar challenges. This mission isn’t just a professional goal it’s a calling, inspired by my desire to give back and provide hope for families who face adversity. While working toward my academic and career goals, I’m also focused on graduating with as little debt as possible. Financial stability will allow me to focus on building my future without being held back by financial burdens. By being resourceful, applying for scholarships, and making careful financial choices, I’m determined to set myself up for success. Overall, my experience at A&T is shaping me into the person I’ve always aspired to be: a leader, a supporter, and an advocate. This university has given me a sense of belonging, confidence, and a clear path toward my dreams. I’m proud to be part of A&T, and I’m committed to using the values and education I’ve gained here to make a positive impact in the world.
