Hi, my name is David Solomon and I am currently studying piano at the Manhattan School of Music. I am on track to graduate in 2027. From a young age, music has been an integral part of my life. My journey
began when I started taking piano lessons at the age of eight. The melodies and
harmonies I created on the piano became a source of joy and a means of
expressing my emotions. As I grew older, my passion for music only deepened,
leading me to practice more and to surpass my limits. I always loved to go to
listen to orchestral concerts because each instrument opens up a new world of
musical possibilities and broadened my understanding and appreciation of
music. Throughout my academic career, I have sought every opportunity to enhance
my musical skills and knowledge. I have participated in numerous school and
community ensembles, including chamber music and choir. These experiences
have taught me the importance of collaboration and teamwork, as well as the
discipline required to excel as a musician.

James B. McCleary Music Scholarship
Music has affected my life not only as an art form but also as a personal and geographical entity. As a junior at Manhattan School of Music, my path has led me outside of one city and one classroom. I have been fortunate enough to study in Madrid and Paris, broadening my perspective of music as a universal language and strengthening my artistic identity as a performer. But it hasn’t come without great financial tribulations.
The experience of studying in Madrid taught me the value of interpretation in relation to color, rhythm, and expressiveness. My experience in Paris taught me the value of nuance and tonal clarity, which has greatly impacted the way I consider interpretation in relation to sound and phrasing. Being in these cultural and musical situations has forced me to go outside of my comfort zone and to become independent and self-assured.
On the flip side, engaging in international studies while continuing my education at MSM has caused me and my family to face financial difficulties. Being in the conservatory requires dedication, time, and attention to my studies, which leaves little room to have another source of income. Even though I have always been committed to my studies, the lack of stability has sometimes meant that I had to face another challenge in addition to the demanding nature of my studies. There have been times when I have wondered how I would be able to continue at the standard that I desire, but my commitment to music has always helped me to move on.
Music has helped me to be strong in the face of adversity. It has helped me to face adversity with patience and faith in the future. Just as one needs to have faith and patience to be able to learn how to play a difficult concerto, the lack of stability has helped me to have faith and patience in the face of adversity.
Despite the challenges, my passion for music remains unrelenting. Performing, learning, and perfecting my craft give me a sense of direction beyond the challenges I face. My time in Madrid, Paris, and now New York has shown me that music isn’t only my field of study, but my life’s work.
Having the means to support myself would give me the chance to focus entirely on my artistic development, to continue to perfect my craft without the burden of uncertainty holding me back. I remain dedicated to using every opportunity to grow, to give back, and to represent the institutions that have given me their best with unwavering integrity.
Audrey Sherrill & Michael D'Ambrisi Music Scholarship
When I was eight years old, I first experienced Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1. I did not yet understand music form or technique, but I do remember being completely absorbed in the music. It wasn’t an instrument to me, it was a voice. And there was something very human about the voice singing above the orchestra, so lyrical, so fragile, yet so strong. I did not yet have the words to describe it, but I knew I wanted to be part of that sound. It was this performance that started me playing the piano.
In the early days, piano was a sense of wonder. I was curious about how music was made, how emotion could be contained within marks on a page. And then, of course, with time, that sense of wonder was accompanied by discipline. Practice was no longer a hobby, but something I did every day. There were moments of frustration, of technical challenges, of moments of doubt, but there were moments of growth too. Music began to be more than something I did; it began to be something that helped me make sense of my emotions, something that helped me express thoughts that I could not verbalize.
A year ago, I myself played Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 while I was a junior at Manhattan School of Music. The process of preparing that piece has been technically challenging as well as emotionally revealing. The first movement had to be clear and controlled, while the second movement had to be vulnerable and rich. The last movement had to be strong and accurate. In my process, I found myself thinking about my eight-year-old self, hearing that piece for the first time. I found that what had once been so distant and unattainable had become a part of me.
Standing in front of the piano during the performance, hearing the orchestra enter, I felt a deep sense of continuity. The piece of music which had inspired my first steps in music had come full circle. It was no longer just something I admired; it was something I carried within me.
That experience reinforced my commitment to a life in music. It was a reminder that music is not just about skill or technicality, but also about development, perseverance through adversity, and the capacity to communicate something meaningful and human. The path from being in awe of the music at eight years old to playing the concerto on stage is not just one of progress, but of dedication to a life of artistic exploration. Music is still a challenge and a shaping force in my life, and I am committed to continuing the journey with dedication and focus.
Lippey Family Scholarship
One of the most defining challenges of my life has been the pursuit of my education and artistic development while coming from a low-income background with limited financial resources available to me. Though my family has always been supportive of me emotionally, they have not had the financial resources to provide the financial security that most students have the luxury of growing up with. What was once a limitation for me eventually became a catalyst for my personal development and growth.
At an early age, I recognized that the opportunities I had always desired to pursue, such as lessons, materials, performances, and educational pursuits, came with a hefty price tag. Observing those around me who were able to progress in their pursuits with fewer financial pressures made me feel disillusioned and uncertain about my own future prospects. At times, I wondered if being talented and working hard would be enough to overcome the financial challenges that I was facing; however, instead of letting these feelings define who I was, I learned to adapt.
This challenge has been what has forced me to be proactive and self-sufficient. I have searched for scholarships, worked whenever possible, and learned the importance of time management. Every opportunity I have received has been incredibly meaningful because I know it was not based on convenience. Instead, it was based on hard work and perseverance. I have come to realize that the circumstances I have been in are no longer what hinder me, but what have given me clarity.
My experiences with financial difficulties have also given me a new appreciation for my art and education. I have come to realize the importance of the opportunities and resources I have been given. This has given me a newfound gratitude. When things have not gone well, I have come to realize the importance of patience and the ability to continue moving forward even when the outcome is uncertain. This skill is not just beneficial for academic and musical pursuits. It can be beneficial for life.
Most significantly, perhaps, it helped me develop my capacity for empathy. Having gone through a period of economic insecurity myself, I have come to realize the unseen struggles of those around me. I have come to understand the need to approach people with humility and an empathetic eye, to realize that talent and drive do not always have an equal and opposite response in terms of opportunity and support.
While certainly difficult in many ways, my background of being a member of a low-income household has also been instrumental in my development as a person. I have come to realize the importance of individuality, drive, and gratitude, as well as an understanding of just how important education and opportunity are to me. I have come to realize that, rather than discouraging me, these experiences have only served to further fuel my desire to succeed and to one day help others overcome their own struggles. I have come to realize that growth is not defined in terms of the lack of adversity, but in terms of one’s ability to overcome it.
Harry & Mary Sheaffer Scholarship
Music has always been my strongest language. As a pianist, I have come to realize that empathy is not something that is necessarily taught, it is something that is felt—something that is heard, responded to, and shared with others. I will use my distinct talents in music and pianos not only as a means of expression, but also as a tool for developing empathy and connection with people of different cultures, backgrounds, and experiences.
As a pianist, listening is just as important as playing. Regardless of whether I am playing alone or with other musicians, I must always be attentive to nuance, balance, and purpose. This kind of listening has significantly influenced my interaction with people beyond music. I have come to understand that it has helped me to develop patience, emotions, and respect for people who have different views and opinions from mine. In a musical ensemble, empathy is a key aspect of interaction. For example, understanding a different musician’s rhythm or making room for another voice is a reflection of understanding other people in a broader sense.
The universality of music is its greatest strength in the creation of a global community. A song can convey sorrow, happiness, love, or hope without words. As a pianist, I have seen firsthand the power of music to create moments of shared humanity between people who may not necessarily speak the same language, share the same culture, or have the same worldview. These moments, though fleeting and powerful, illustrate the ability of art to break down barriers and remind us of our shared emotional experiences. I hope to create and share music that inspires reflection, empathy, and openness.
Education is also a critical component of my vision. My experience as a piano teacher has taught me that music education is not just about teaching technique, but about building confidence, risk, and connection. When students feel free to take risks and be themselves, they learn not only how to play, but also how to listen and connect with others. I hope to create learning environments that are inclusive and empowering for students from all walks of life. Through mentoring younger musicians and sharing my own experiences, I hope to make music more accessible and to encourage collaboration over competition.
Collaboration itself is at the core of how I see my future. Collaborating with musicians from various cultural backgrounds has not only opened my eyes to the diversity of music, but also to the diversity of humanity. By working on various international, interdisciplinary, and community-based initiatives, I aspire to give voice to diversity and create spaces where connection and understanding are possible.
In a world divided by misunderstanding and fear, music can be a powerful antidote, a way to connect people on a level beyond our differences, on a level of feeling. By utilizing my talent as a pianist in a way that not only speaks, but also listens, I aspire to help create a world where people are closer to one another.
Pamela Branchini Memorial Scholarship
To me, collaboration in music is not just about playing with others; it's about the way you build trust, shared intention, and human connection through sound. I'd always imagined that music-classical music in particular-was a solo art. But in fact, I've learned that nothing could be farther from the truth. My most profound artistic growth has taken place in the crucible of collaboration-with teachers and mentors, with colleagues and fellow musicians, with composers, and most importantly, with audiences-through the exchange of ideas and expansion of perspectives.
As a piano student at Manhattan School of Music, collaboration is interwoven into my daily life. Working in chamber music settings, accompanying singers and instrumentalists, and participating in masterclasses, I am constantly reminded that music thrives on dialogue. Collaboration challenges me to listen actively, to adapt, and to place the collective expression above my own individual voice. These experiences have shaped my understanding of music as a shared language rather than a solo statement.
I have had the opportunity to study and work with some of the most influential figures in music, among them Dmitri Bashkirov and Solomon Mikowsky. It was their teaching that really reaffirmed that collaboration is based on mentorship and respect. Their teaching went much further than technical guidance; they were invested in students' ideas, inspiring investigation, questioning, and individualism. From these interactions, I learned that collaboration far from suppresses personal artistry; instead, it empowers it. The exchange between teacher and student became a partnership grounded in curiosity and shared commitment to the music.
Beyond formal instruction and training, collaborative experiences with peers have been similarly inspiring. Working closely with other musicians has taught me the importance of communication beyond words-through timing, breath, and subtle musical gesture. In rehearsals, moments of disagreement often became opportunities for deeper understanding, pushing us to articulate our artistic intentions more clearly. These experiences paralleled the collaborative process that Pam Branchini described-relationships forged through preparation that ultimately elevate the final performance.
In my future field, collaboration means staying open: to ideas, to people, and to growth. It recognises that only when the music can reflect multiple voices in a unified expression does music have the real effect. As I continue my journey as a pianist, I hope to create collaborative environments that are inclusive, inquisitive, and always rooted in mutual respect. The connections forged through collaboration are not only integral to the creative process but provide the meaningful life in music.
New Beginnings Immigrant Scholarship
I am an immigrant, and my experience while growing up shaped not only who I have become but also how I looked at the world and my place in the world. Moving between cultures taught me early in life the strength of resilience. I learned how to adapt, how to listen before speaking, and how to find confidence even when out of place. I came from a first-generation background, so I often had to independently navigate places that were foreign to my family and me, bearing the weight of hope my family placed in me with the fear of forging an unchartered path. Those experiences deeply influenced my commitment to my education and my future career.
Music was my anchor when everything else was in transition. When words were not enough, and I could not find my place in a new environment, the piano gave me a voice. No matter where I resided, music remained a constant-something that cut across language, culture, and borders. From the piano came my sense of belonging and purpose, which kept me from getting lost during transit. It also helped me connect with others in ways that felt real and innate.
I am a junior at the Manhattan School of Music, where I study piano and continue to refine both technical skills and artistic identity. To study at an institution that values excellence, collaboration, and creativity is nothing short of life-changing. Coming from an immigrant background, gaining admission into such a prestigious conservatory really showed me that it was not a limitation but actually a strength that fueled my artistry. I am able to bring depth, empathy, and perspective into my performances through experiences.
My career aspiration is a life in music that balances performance and education with community engagement. This means professional performance, teaching, and mentoring students from diverse and immigrant backgrounds who might not see themselves represented in the classical music space. I want to make music education more available and inclusive; I particularly wish to work with students who feel torn between two cultures, as I once did.
This scholarship would support not only my academic journey, but my ability to continue pursuing music without financial barriers. More importantly, it would affirm the value of immigrant voices in higher education and the arts. I carry my story with pride, knowing that my journey reflects perseverance, cultural richness, and a commitment to giving back through music.
Neil Margeson Sound Scholarship
Music and sound are at the core of my person and my understanding of the world around me. Music is a way of articulation and has become the impulse for my learning process as a junior piano student in Manhattan School of Music. Through sound, I am able to convey emotion, ideas, and narratives that transcend the use of words. The piano, particularly, has remained in my life for comfort and challenge, molding my artistic identity.
Music has been instrumental in my education, teaching me discipline, resilience, and self-awareness. The demanding training within a conservatory setting has driven me to establish good practice habits that include honed time management skills and the ability to reflect critically upon my work. Long hours in the practice room, coupled with lessons, juries, and performances, have taught me well that growth is gradual and intentional. Through music, I have learned how to set goals, welcome constructive criticism, and push through setbacks-skills that inform the way in which I tackle all areas of learning.
Being in the Manhattan School of Music has been particularly rich for me in that I am surrounded by committed and passionate music lovers. Performing in recitals, classes, and ensemble performances has increased my level of confidence and has taught me the values of cooperation and listening. Such aspects of music have developed in me a greater comprehension of the process of communication through music and have challenged me to experiment in that regard and push boundaries in pursuing the goals of music in spite of obstacles in the form of personal doubts and fears.
Music has also been a means of balance and self-development throughout my academic career. Music provides me with an opportunity to reflect, recharge, and share myself openly. I can say that the mental pressures involved with piano performance have contributed to my becoming more reflective and more disciplined, thereby developing my personal character.
As I move forward in the future, my intentions are to further my skills as a musician and create a lasting career in this field. I would like to perform for people, create music with other musicians, and reach as many people as possible through their songs. I would also like to give back by teaching other musicians who are just starting their careers and help them build confidence in their skills as musicians. In the end, I would like my passion for music to become a source of furthering my life as a musician, but instead become an avenue of connection and service through my music.
New Jersey New York First Generation Scholarship
Becoming a first-generation college college graduate means more to me than just completing a college degree; it is an achievement that represents resilience, opportunity, and the realization of a dream for myself and for my family. As a music major at the Manhattan School of Music, achieving my college degree would already be an important achievement, and being the first from my family to finish college would emphasize the achievement of shattering borders and opening doors for future generations. It would prove that although there may be limited resources and vision in achieving a college education, the reward for pursuing one’s dream is worth it.
In my role as a piano major, I have learned to cultivate discipline, perseverance, and personal motivation—traits which have shaped me as a person to date. It is music which has been integral to my extracurricular life and personal growth. As a result of dedication to piano through performances, group activities, educational-related musical endeavors at school, etc., I have been able to develop expertise in personal time management, goal setting with long-term perspectives, and dedication to causes even within stressful program surroundings.
My outside activities in music have also contributed to my development in the area of leadership. Working with other musicians in ensembles and chamber music has helped me understand how important listening, communication, and respect are to working with other people. My experience with music has helped me understand how to contribute to a group effort while still taking personal initiative. My musical talents have helped me understand how success is not often attained alone but through efforts of others.
The fact that I am a college first-generation student has forced me to be self-reliant and aggressive in pursuing opportunities and pursuing support. The reality of college life without a family model to direct me has sometimes been difficult but has certainly made me resourceful and driven. My involvement outside of college through music has provided me with a sense of belonging and with a set of purposes to remain centered on my aims.
Ultimately, being a member of the graduating class as a first-generation college graduate would obviously be an enormous personal triumph and source of family pride. This, in turn, would solidify my own determination and commitment to inspiring others through my education and training as a musician to seek higher education and pursue their passions, potential and, most importantly, to fulfill their dreams.
Jacob Kelly Memorial Scholarship for Arts and Music
I am a diligent student and-passionate person interested in music and piano. Music has long been significant to me and has influenced my personal and academic lives. Playing the piano enables me to convey emotions, ideas, and narratives that words cannot express. Music has been teaching me the significance of patience, hard work, and focus through my years of commitment to this art. Being a student at some of the most prestigious music schools in the world has taught me many lessons about music and about how the great performers have done it.
As someone who has been learning piano, I understand that music is in fact not only performance, but communication and connection as well. Learning piano has increased my confidence and self-expression, while also providing me with an outlet for creativity that serves to offset the requirements of schooling. In each instance, whether I am practicing a new composition and refining difficult sections, I am always challenged to improve and analyze myself.
This scholarship will be an integral component in the pursuit of my academic and artistic objectives. Finances will allow me to pursue my education by alleviating the cost of tuition, instruments, supplies, and practice time. I would be able to further develop myself by learning new material and capitalizing on the various opportunities available to help me progress not only as a student but also as a musician.
More importantly, however, this award would be a source of encouragement and recognition of my passion for music. Ultimately, I look forward to giving back to my community through teaching and/or mentoring others, or through contributions in my community through music.
In fact, receiving this scholarship will not only help me in my studies now; it will help me to prepare for the future because I will be able to learn, create, and make the world a better place through music. This would enable me to seek performance opportunities, attend masterclasses, and share music with other musicians, which is so vital to the life of an artist. In the long term, such support would enable me to turn my passion into a lifelong pursuit imbued with purpose, service, and learning.
Sunni E. Fagan Memorial Music Scholarship
I am especially passionate about music because it has truly been an appreciative component of my existence throughout my entire life. Music gives people an opportunity to convey their feelings, ideas, and experiences, which sometimes are hard to verbalize. Since I have been a piano student, I have realized that music is much more about telling a story rather than playing a piece or executing technic correctly. Every time I sit at the piano, I remember that music could have a profound effect, not only upon the receiver but upon the creator as well.
Studying piano has taught me the values of discipline, patience, and perseverance. Learning a composition takes time, effort, and dedication, and it is through such learning that I have developed an excellent work ethic. Piano studies have also increased my self-awareness and confidence, whether it is while performing alone or in front of other people. Music confronts me with challenges that make me grow, think, and communicate on a personal level. These are the things that make me so passionate about music that I choose to pursue it further.
I envision my future career enabling me to give back to the youth, using music as a tool for empowering, educating, and inspiring. Every young person deserves the opportunity for creative outlets, none less than those who might not have the means or encouragement to pursue music. I hope to mentor and teach young musicians, helping them build both technical skills and self-confidence. Building a supportive, inclusive learning environment, I want students to feel seen, heard, and capable of success.
Besides teaching, I would like to give back to the community through programs, workshops, and performances that make music accessible. I want to show the youth that music is not only for the pros but for anyone willing to learn their way and express themselves. By sharing my own journey as a music student, including my setbacks and successes, I hope to provide the drive needed for youths to believe in themselves and pursue their passions with confidence.
Ultimately, I hope to use the power of music and make a positive difference in the lives of others. The influence of music has contributed to who I am today, and I would like to pass this along in a positive and meaningful manner. I would like to use my influence to assist and guide the new generation in finding their own meaning and sense of belonging through music.
Marshall and Dorothy Smith Music Scholarship
I was born in Cluj-Napoca (Romania) in 2002. I started to play the piano at the age of 8 at the EMA School of Music (Spain) with Anna Placzkowska. Starting with the 2013-2014 academic year, I continued my studies in Romania, at the “Sigismund Toduta” College of Music in Cluj-Napoca. There I studied the piano with Monica Noveanu, Lucian Gheju and Daniel Goiti. From 2019 till 2021 I was a student of Dimitri Bashkirov at the Escuela Superior de Musica “Reina Sofia” in Madrid. After the maestro`s death in the spring of 2021, I decided to move to Paris to study at the CRR de Paris with Hugues Leclere. Starting with september 2023 I am a student at the Manhattan School of Music where I studied with the maestro Dr. Solomon Mikowsky until he passed away. I am currently strudying with Dr. Jiayin Li. I won numerous national and international piano competitions. I also played in many solo and chamber music recitals in Romania, the USA, Spain, France. I also attended many masterclasses with teachers like Rena Shereshevskaya, Ralf Gothoni, Claudio Martinez Mehner, Tobias Schebenberger, Benjamin Engeli, Anton Kernjak, Gerardo Vila, Adriana Bera, Balasz Demeny, Diana Ketler.
As a classical piano major at the Manhattan School of Music, I am deeply committed to artistic excellence and the redemptive power of music. The piano has been not just my instrument, but also my voice, a vehicle of communication for what words so frequently fall short of conveying from an early age. Attending all there prestigious music schools has challenged me to expand beyond my own perception of ability, both technically and creatively, and reaffirmed for me that music has the power to deeply move, inspire, and unite people.
The rigorous training under the guidance of world-class instructors, has refined my art, broadened my knowledge of music, and equipped me to navigate an enormous repertoire of music, from Bach and Beethoven to Scriabin and works yet to be written. Every performance opportunity, masterclass, and coaching has brought new challenges, new opportunities and endless rewards. With all these great things also come some big financial costs.
This scholarship would not only alleviate some of the financial stress on my family and me, but allow me to focus even more intently on my schoolwork, rehearsals, and performance opportunities. It would grant me freedom to compete, collaborate with other musicians, and perform outreach activities without constantly fearing financial hardship. I am committed to providing something back by means of music. On the stage of a concert hall or a community center, I intend to convey the emotional power and the human connection that classical music possesses. In the coming years, I would like to combine performing, teaching, and outreach in order to help provide more access to music education to others, especially in minority groups.
After completing my degree, I would be interested in becoming a concert pianist or teacher, ideally both. As a performer, I can share the emotional depth and common language of music with individuals all around the world, while teaching me enables me to impart what I have learned and inspire tomorrow's performers. I believe that the greatest musicians not only have control over their craft, but also help others find their voice through song.

I also had the privilege to study with Dr. Solomon Mikowsky in NYC for the past academic year. Unfortunately, he also passed away this year. Despite the short collaboration we had I learned many important things from him. These experiences were both demanding and rewarding, and solidified my desire to pursue music at a higher level. I am particularly passionate about classical music, and I am eager to delve deeper into music theory, composition, and performance.
This Scholarship will be instrumental in helping me achieve my academic and professional goals. The financial support will allow me to focus more on my studies and less on the financial burden of tuition and other related expenses. Moreover, the scholarship will enable me to access advanced musical training and resources that are crucial for my development as a musician. I am committed to making the most of this opportunity by dedicating myself fully to my studies and contributing positively to the musical community at MSM.
In conclusion, I am confident that my passion, dedication, and achievements in music make me a strong candidate for this Musical Scholarship. I am excited about the possibility of furthering my musical education and making meaningful contributions to the field of music. Thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely,
David Solomon.
Randall Davis Memorial Music Scholarship
I am writing to express my profound interest in applying for this Scholarship. I am currently doing my undergraduate studies at the Manhattan School of Music. My major is classical piano. As a passionate and dedicated musician, I believe that this scholarship will provide me with invaluable opportunities to further my musical education and contribute meaningfully to the field of music.
From a young age, music has been an integral part of my life. My journey began when I started taking piano lessons at the age of eight. The melodies and harmonies I created on the piano became a source of joy and a means of expressing my emotions. As I grew older, my passion for music only deepened, leading me to practice more and to surpass my limits. I always loved to go to listen to orchestral cocerts because each instrument opens up a new world of musical possibilities and broadened my understanding and appreciation of music.
Throughout my academic career, I have sought every opportunity to enhance my musical skills and knowledge. I have participated in numerous school and community ensembles, including chamber music and choir. These experiences have taught me the importance of collaboration and teamwork, as well as the discipline required to excel as a musician. Additionally, I have attended several music workshops and masterclasses, where I have had the privilege of learning from distinguished musicians and educators. These experiences have not only honed my technical skills but also inspired me to pursue a career in music. For example, I had the opportunity to be a student of Dimitri Bashkirov in Spain.
