Bio

My goal is to earn a degree in agriscience focusing on Botany and Horticulture. Eventually, I would like to start my own business, helping communities source their food locally and helping urban areas utilize their space more efficiently and raise their food right in the city. I plan to do this utilizing vertical hydroponic gardening.

When I started my high school academic career, I was not sure college was an attainable goal. Only two years before my freshman year, I was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome and a rare learning disability called Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD). My doctors had told me I might never be able to drive, and because there wasn’t much information about NLD, my chances of getting to college were slim. When I entered ninth grade, I was still learning to navigate how I process information and advocate effectively to be as successful as possible. In my first year at Lowell High School (LHS), I took Mr. Nugent’s Agriscience Biology class, Ms. Mainero was my resource teacher, and Mr. VanderWarf was the Scoutmaster for Lowell Troop 102. These three LHS instructors formed my dream team. They had me stepping outside my comfort zone. They encouraged me to try several different organizational systems, test-taking methods, and tools to beat the odds that had been set before me. Slowly, I started to gain confidence. With every win, I believed in myself more. My parents continued to push and expect more because they knew I could do more. While working on my academics, I knew I wanted to be a leader in my field of study, so I branched out to be part of the student culture at LHS and within the community of Lowell. I earned the rank of Eagle Scout in September 2022, Lowell FFA Outstanding Junior in March 2022, co-captain of the LHS Varsity Clay Target Team in 2023, and recently learned I had met the requirements for the State FFA Degree. That Dream Team of teachers, along with my parents, is why I have been accepted to the Michigan State University (MSU) Institute for Agricultural Technology while simultaneously attending Montcalm Community College to pursue an Associate of Applied Science. Starting my post-secondary education career at MSU is where I will test everything I have been taught both inside and outside the classroom. I will demonstrate that I have not only beat the odds of being successful and have been accepted at the collegiate level, but I am doing so at my first choice. There is no better place to learn to enhance “the quality of life for the people of Michigan and the world by advancing knowledge for the management of communities and agricultural, natural resource, and food systems to meet diverse human needs in a sustainable manner” [MSU Agriculture Mission], than starting with an education from MSU. I aim to continue building the business I started in October 2022, Cêva Farm, where I experiment with various methods to grow food sources vertically utilizing hydroponics and aquaponics. I want to help communities set up programs that teach people how to plan their garden environments for vegetables and help supply smaller farms with quality plants. My goal is to be part of the solution that helps reduce the food security crisis we face by feeding more than 10 billion people sustainably by 2050. I have learned many skills throughout my time at LHS. I can step outside my comfort zone, use the many resources available, and learn from failure; I have developed critical thinking skills, strong ethics, a sense of responsibility, and interact with people from diverse backgrounds. I am ready to expand my learning experience in college and become a valuable member of the MSU community and start my post-Red Arrow career. I fully embrace the Lowell Area Schools motto of Learners today. Leaders tomorrow. Red Arrows for life. I will represent both the LHS and MSU communities with honor and distinction.
