My name is David Ghukasyan. I am Armenian and I'm a high school senior at Richmond Academy of Seventh-Day Adventists in Richmond, Virginia. I am passionate about building and designing which is something I have had since a young age. I spend my free time reading books and playing sports. Furthermore, I have a strong love for the game of basketball. At school, I serve as the founder and coach of the current Basketball Club at Richmond Academy. From this experience, I learned the value of initiative, responsibility, and discipline. I realized what it takes to be a leader and what it means to have an impact on my community. Barbara Cain Literary Scholarship
My passion for reading books has shaped the way I see literature and my life. Over the course of my reading journey, I have read countless books and novels, ranging from historical fiction to action thrillers and mysteries. I have read books, including "The Godfather", "Around the World in Eighty Days", "Animal Farm", "Robinson Crusoe", and many more. From these books, I learned that there is no one right way to write or tell a story. Every author writes a novel with their own mix of creativity, humor, action, and suspense. Books like "The Godfather" use suspense and anticipation to build up certain events in the story. Others like "Around the World in Eighty Days" and "Robinson Crusoe" are written and crafted with far more detail and action to capture the reader's focus. But, while every story is unique, they all share similar purposes. For example, most of the books that I have read aimed either to argue a certain theme/message to me as a reader or inform me of a significant historical event that happened in the past. Others are simply written to provide the reader with entertainment. All three are reasons why I read books and it's the same reasons why I continue to read today. Additionally, I have come to appreciate books more now than I have in the past. Reading has become a normal part of my routine after school. No matter what kind of day I have at school, I come home excited to continue reading where I left off from yesterday. Reading has given me an opportunity to escape from all of the work and stress I had during the day. It is one part of my day where I can just relax and enjoy myself. The books I read have taught me important life skills and principles. From "The Godfather", I learned the values of discipline and wit. Not only that but I also learned the importance of keeping family close too! Books like Animal Farm taught me the power of influence in society and the true values of freedom. Altogether, reading has shaped the way I see life and the course I want to take. As I read these books, I always pictured myself as the main characters of each story. Whenever I read, I would try to put myself in their shoes to get a better sense of the story that I was reading. I believe it is because of this that I got inspired by my novels and how I developed my life goals in the first place. Today, my goals are to make an impact on the world and start a family of my own. Books have helped me find my passions and goals in life as well. As I read different books, I discovered what I want to do with my life and how I can make a difference. My advice to readers is to just take advantage of reading. Everyone will have a different experience with reading and every reader will have their own goals shaped by the books that they read. I hope that reading will have the same impact on other readers as it did on me.
      LeBron James Fan Scholarship
Basketball has always been part of my life. From watching the game to playing with my friends, basketball has shaped my identity and the person I am today. I have kept up with the NBA (National Basketball Association) for over ten years and I have always loved watching the game. One of my favorite players include Tim Duncan (San Antonio Spurs), Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors), and Lebron James. Lebron James currently plays for the Los Angeles Lakers but has also played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat between 2010-2014. I am a huge fan of Lebron James because of both his dominance in the NBA and his accolades. Lebron James was drafted in 2003, over twenty years. Despite this, Lebron James continues to be one of the top players in the NBA. This past season, at the age of 39 years old, Lebron James averaged 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 8.3 assists per game. His stats alone show the caliber of a player he truly is. Additionally, Lebron James has made 10 NBA Finals appearances which is more than some NBA franchises have ever made in their history. As of now, Lebron James has four NBA Finals MVPs and four regular-season MVPS. Out of his ten NBA Finals appearances, Lebron James has won four of them against OKC, the Spurs, Warriors, and Miami Heat, in that order. Every season, except his rookie season, Lebron James has participated in the All-Star Games. Lebron James is officially the all-time leading scorer in the history of the NBA after passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; he is fourth on the list for most assists in NBA history. Lebron James has won both All-NBA Defensive and Offensive Team awards multiple times throughout his career. Furthermore, on the international stage, Lebron James has won three gold medals, most recently in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France. At this point in his career, Lebron James has won almost every accolade which is why he is simply known as "The King." For these reasons, I believe that Lebron James is the G.O.A.T. (greatest player of all time) in basketball. His dominance throughout his entire career shows how dedicated Lebron James is to the game of basketball. Even at 39, Lebron James plays with the same hunger and fire that he did at 18 when he first entered the league. Some still argue that Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time, but I believe that Lebron James has surpassed Michael in every aspect of the game. He has achieved more points, assists, rebounds, etc. Lebron James won four NBA championships with four different teams and NBA franchises. Lebron James makes the team around him better and has shown that he achieves success despite the circumstances of the team he is playing in. The only argument is that Michael Jordan has won more championships, but I don't believe that we should only determine a player's legacy from the number of championships they won. Ever since I started watching the NBA, Lebron James was always on TV, showing his talent and genius style of play to the rest of the world. I grew up watching Lebron James and I hope I don't see him retire anytime soon.
      Learner Math Lover Scholarship
Math has always been my favorite subject at school. Since a young age, mathematics has always been easy for me to do because of the passion I had for it. I love math because it was something that I was always good at. Those who love what they do love their work for this same reason. When you are skilled at a particular thing, you feel a sense of pride because you know that what you do is challenging for others. At school, I understood the importance of mathematics and what it has done for our world. I realized the many technologies and innovations (e.g. computers & skyscrapers) society would have never been able to achieve without the principles and understanding of mathematics. Everything in our world deals with mathematics. The way buildings are constructed and built in our cities deals with mathematics. The way cars perform and how modern transportation systems function today all deal with the foundations of mathematics. Yes, certain kinds of mathematics can be both complicated and difficult for people. I was fortunate to have great teachers at a young age who helped me not only excel at the subject but also find a passion for it as a result. Mathematics plays an essential role in our society and world. It is now more important than ever. There are countless new advancements and innovations that await us in the future of society. Yet, all of them will be a result of mathematics and the works of inventors/innovators who applied the principles of mathematics to make the world a better place. That is why I love mathematics, and it's that reason why I try to help others who are struggling with mathematics. Mathematics can be an incredible tool no matter what situation you are in or the path you choose in life.
