Bio

I am David Bush, I am from Mobile, Alabama. I am passionate about becoming a therapist because I have lost three family members to mental health issues: two uncles and my grandfather. When they were asked why they didn't go to therapy, they said it was because none of their therapists looked like them. I want to change that. I am currently a student at Southern New Hampshire University, where I am majoring in psychology. I am also working full-time to support myself and my mother, who has stage 3 lung cancer. I know that my journey to becoming a therapist will be challenging, but I am determined to make a difference in the lives of others. I believe that everyone deserves access to quality mental health care, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. I want to be a therapist who can help people from all backgrounds feel seen, heard, and understood. I want to be the one seed that can start a forest. I am excited to continue my education and to learn more about the field of psychology. I am also excited to start my career as a therapist and to make a difference in the lives of others.

      Mental Health Importance Scholarship
My name is David Bush, and I am from Mobile, Alabama. Currently, I am attending Southern New Hampshire University, balancing my academic pursuits with the responsibility of working full-time. My primary motivation for working tirelessly is to provide support for my mother, who is bravely battling stage 3 lung cancer. Throughout my life, I have experienced the profound impact of mental health issues on my family. Sadly, I have lost three beloved family members, including my two uncles and my grandfather, due to their struggles with mental health. Reflecting on their journeys, I discovered a common thread—their reluctance to seek therapy. When asked about their reluctance, they often cited the lack of relatability with the therapists they encountered. This revelation ignited a passionate desire within me to effect change in this realm. I believe that mental health is of utmost importance because it directly influences our overall well-being and quality of life. Our mental well-being affects our emotions, thoughts, behaviors, relationships, and overall functioning. Taking care of our mental health is essential for leading a fulfilling and meaningful life. To maintain my mental wellness, I prioritize self-care practices that nourish my mind, body, and soul. First and foremost, I engage in regular exercise, as physical activity has been scientifically proven to boost mood, reduce stress, and enhance overall mental well-being. Whether it's going for a jog, practicing yoga, or participating in team sports, I find joy and therapeutic benefits in staying active. In addition to physical exercise, I allocate time for activities that bring me joy and relaxation. This includes pursuing hobbies such as playing musical instruments, reading books, and spending time in nature. These activities provide a sense of fulfillment and serve as a form of self-expression and rejuvenation. Moreover, I recognize the importance of maintaining a healthy support system. I prioritize spending time with loved ones, engaging in open and honest conversations, and seeking emotional support when needed. Cultivating meaningful connections and fostering positive relationships has a profound impact on my mental well-being. Furthermore, I place great emphasis on self-reflection and introspection. I dedicate time to journaling, meditation, and mindfulness practices. These techniques help me gain clarity, manage stress, and cultivate a sense of inner peace and self-awareness. Lastly, I believe in the power of therapy and professional support. I understand that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but rather an act of strength. When faced with challenging times or when I need guidance, I am not hesitant to reach out to a therapist or counselor. I understand the transformative impact they can have on one's mental health and overall well-being. By incorporating these practices into my life, I strive to maintain and enhance my mental wellness. I firmly believe that taking care of our mental health is an ongoing journey and a lifelong commitment. By prioritizing self-care, seeking support, and cultivating healthy habits, I am able to navigate life's challenges with resilience, compassion, and a renewed sense of purpose.
      Meaningful Existence Scholarship
Title: Empowering Mental Health: Planting the Seeds of Change Introduction: Dear Scholarship Committee, My name is David Bush, and I am honored to have the opportunity to apply for this college scholarship. I hail from Mobile, Alabama, and I am currently pursuing my education at Southern New Hampshire University. I am writing to share my personal journey and express my unwavering passion for becoming a therapist. Through my own experiences with loss and witnessing the devastating effects of mental health struggles within my family, I am determined to break the barriers that hinder individuals from seeking therapy and create a more inclusive and accessible mental health landscape. Personal Story: Growing up, I have had to face numerous challenges, including being the primary caregiver for my mother, who has been bravely battling stage 3 lung cancer. Balancing full-time work and college studies has not been easy, but it has instilled in me a strong work ethic and deepened my sense of responsibility. Witnessing the physical and emotional toll of my mother's illness has intensified my desire to make a positive impact in the lives of others, especially those who are grappling with their own mental health battles. Passion for Mental Health: My passion for becoming a therapist stems from the tragic loss of three family members who struggled with mental health issues. I tragically lost two beloved uncles and my grandfather, all of whom never sought therapy despite desperately needing it. When questioned about their reluctance to seek help, they expressed that the lack of representation played a significant role in their decision. They felt that therapists did not understand or resemble their own unique cultural backgrounds, creating a barrier to their willingness to engage in therapy. Cultivating Inclusivity: It is this pervasive lack of diversity and representation within the mental health field that drives me to pursue my goal of becoming a therapist. I want to bridge the gap between cultural differences and mental health care, ensuring that individuals from all walks of life feel comfortable and understood when seeking therapy. By fostering a more inclusive environment, I aim to break down the stigmas surrounding mental health within marginalized communities. Being the Seed of Change: I am aware that a single individual cannot change the entire landscape of mental health care, but I firmly believe that I can be the catalyst to start a powerful movement. By pursuing a career as a therapist, I envision myself as that one seed that germinates into a flourishing forest. Through my compassion, empathy, and culturally sensitive approach, I aim to inspire others, particularly those who have been underserved or overlooked, to seek therapy and begin their journey toward healing and self-discovery. Conclusion: In conclusion, I am deeply committed to my goal of becoming a therapist and making mental health care more accessible and inclusive. Through personal experiences with loss, supporting my mother's battle against cancer, and witnessing the impact of mental health struggles within my own family, I am resolute in my determination to create a more empathetic and culturally sensitive mental health landscape. With the support of this scholarship, I will be one step closer to transforming lives and sowing the seeds of positive change in the realm of mental health care. Thank you for considering my application. Sincerely, David Bush
