On September 11, 2001, Todd Beamer declared two words that would forever live in infamy with the American people: "Let's Roll." As a Passenger on United Airlines Flight 93, Todd, alongside six other passengers overtook the hijackers before crashing the plane into an empty field, saving hundreds of lives on Capitol Hill. Todd is my hero, not because he was an accomplished academic, or a brilliant philosopher, or a great contributor to the legal or medical fields. He was just the opposite. He was just a regular guy, not unlike myself, and not unlike every other American that experienced September 11th, 2001. He was an ordinary guy who exhibited heroism and bravery that I will never be able to fully appreciate. And that is why I admire him. The words "Let's Roll" are so important because it shows Todd was the leader of the group. A regular guy living everyday life, on his usual routine, suddenly became a heroic figure for millions as he led six others to act bravely, heroically, and selflessly. But beyond that, Todd's life is an incredible example because he is proof that ordinary people can inspire greatness in everyone. He is proof that the average, insignificant guy can inspire a nation. Is that not a beautiful illustration of the Western Culture that Americans admire so much? The knowledge that anyone, from anywhere, can inspire anything and encourage anyone. Todd was a natural leader, but also an embodiment of the spirit and hope we can have in our nation. That day, he was called to heroism, bravery, and sacrifice; he did not back down from that call. Todd inspires every American to ask himself the same question: Will I be ready? Will I be as brave as Todd Beamer, or will I retreat from duty?
