I remember one night in 2016 like it was yesterday. My mom was sitting on the edge of the bed, exhausted, trying to study for school while holding my newborn sister, Daria. The room was quiet except for the sound of pages turning and my sister softly crying. My mom had already worked a full day, and I knew she would be up most of the night again. I watched her fight through exhaustion, determined to better herself for our family. At that moment, something shifted in me. I asked her if I could hold my sister so she could study. That simple question became the beginning of a new level of responsibility in my life. Growing up in a single parent household meant that life was not easy. My mom worked two and sometimes three jobs just to make sure we had what we needed. There were times when we did not have everything, but she never allowed us to go without love, strength, or guidance. I watched her sacrifice daily, and it forced me to mature faster than most kids my age. I understood early that if I wanted something different for my future, I would have to work for it. One of the most difficult parts of my upbringing was dealing with the absence of my father. He struggled with addiction and chose a path that did not include being present in my life. As a child, I took that personally. I questioned my worth and wondered why I was not enough for him to change. Those thoughts stayed with me for a long time and created moments where I felt broken and unsure of myself. There were times when I wanted to give up because the emotional weight felt overwhelming. However, deep down, I knew I had to make a choice about who I was going to become. Instead of allowing my circumstances to define me, I used them as motivation. I stepped up in my household by helping care for my younger sister and supporting my mom in any way I could. I became more disciplined and focused on building a better future. I learned how to manage responsibility, stay committed, and push forward even when things were difficult. I realized that while I could not control my past, I had full control over my future. There were moments when I felt like I was carrying more than I should at a young age, but those moments built my strength. They taught me how to handle pressure, how to stay grounded, and how to continue moving forward even when life felt uncertain. Watching my mom pursue her education despite being exhausted showed me the true meaning of determination. My name is Datreel Scott, and I am a student-athlete at Calvary Baptist Academy with a 3.5 GPA. My journey has been shaped by adversity, but instead of allowing it to define me, I have used it as motivation to grow, succeed, and create a better future for myself and others. Growing up, I witnessed what true sacrifice looks like. My mother worked three jobs while still doing everything she could to care for me and my sister. There were times when we struggled to meet basic needs. I remember moments when our lights were turned off and watching my mom ask family members for help just to get us through. Seeing her push through those challenges taught me resilience, responsibility, and the value of hard work. It showed me that no matter how difficult life becomes, giving up is never an option. In addition to financial hardships, I also experienced personal loss. I lost my father due to struggles with drugs and domestic violence, and more recently, I lost my grandmother. Those experiences were painful, but they gave me clarity and motivation. I made a decision that I would not allow those circumstances to define my path. Instead, I chose to become someone who breaks negative cycles and builds a better future. Attending Calvary Baptist Academy has also challenged me in a different way. As one of the few Black students, I have often found myself in spaces where I had to stand strong in who I am, even when I felt different. That experience has helped me grow in confidence, leadership, and self-awareness. It has pushed me to represent myself, my family, and my community with pride and determination. Despite these challenges, I have remained committed to my education. Maintaining a 3.5 GPA while balancing life obstacles and athletics has required discipline and focus. I understand that education is the key to creating opportunities, and I am determined to make the most of it. I continue to push myself academically because I know my future depends on the work I put in today. Basketball has played a major role in shaping who I am. It has taught me discipline, time management, teamwork, and perseverance. As a student athlete, I have learned how to stay focused under pressure and push through adversity. Basketball has been both an outlet and a foundation for growth, helping me develop the mindset I need to succeed in all areas of life. Academically, I have remained committed to my education despite everything I have faced.
