When I was a baby I lived in the shelter with my family. I later moved to Queens, New York when my mom found a house for rent. Years later, we were hit by Hurricane Sandy, forcing us to live with my grandma for a few months. I was not able to go to school and had to rely on churches for food and candles for light. What's significant for me is knowing where I came from. From the places I live, Time spent laying on floors with barely any food. I worked on my goals, joined six extracurriculars in high school, and became the president of three. It helped me stay focused on my community. When I was an active member in the Harrisburg Youth Commission, I worked with the city council members, the city clerk, the mayor, and others on social issues and the passing of bills to better the community of Harrisburg, Pa
After college, I plan on going to the Peace Corps and servicing the full 27-month commitment. I believe Peace Corps is making a difference in the world. I know single handily I cannot change the world, but I do know that with a college education and then attending the Peace Corps, I can make a positive impact on the world. After I serve my two years, I want to teach unprivileged, low-income children. I want them to see that someone who came from the obstacles as they came from can make it. No one in my family has ever graduated from college and I believe that it gives me the fuel to continue to thrive to become the person I want to become. I was born and raised in urban neighborhoods were growing up I did not have role models; I saw people who I did not want to become. Within my twenty years of life, I have been through enough to break an individual. I saw how many people in my community were ending up: In jail, murders, being remembered as a balloon on a pole, dead, or an addict. I didn’t want that kind of life for me. I don’t want to be remembered like that. I want more for myself and my family. Coming from a lack of income, I saw that the educational system was lacking when it came to urban communities. I realized I did not receive the proper education that I know someone who was from higher-income received. I believe going to college gives me the full education I lacked as a child and I also believe with a college education, I have a great opportunity to have and create a bright future, not only for myself but for my family. I strongly believe that with my education, previous experience, and future experiences, I have the power to create the change I want to see in the world. The end goal from a career standpoint is to become a professor of creative writing in hopes of teaching first-generation students the importance of creative writing. I know with this grant I will be able to fulfill my life purpose which is to educate those in need.
