Bio

I am an adult student, an immigrant, who follows the dream of becoming a dental hygienist. The first and only one in my family to attend an american college. My goal is to bring awareness about preventative care and oral health, as well as to ease the patients’ anxiety and fear of dental offices. I would also like to be a part of further research on the correlation between oral and systemic health. I love spending my free time outdoors, cooking, crafting, and traveling.

    Dental Hygiene Basics Scholarship
My name is Darya Churikova and my journey into dental hygiene began in Kazakhstan, where I was born and raised. Lack of patient education about importance of oral hygiene had a great impact on my dental health and quality of life. Frequent visits to the dentist shaped my early years, fostering a deep interest in oral care that eventually led me to pursue a career in dental hygiene in the United States. At 18, I made the bold decision to move alone to the U.S., driven by a determination to explore my passion for dental hygiene and contribute meaningfully to the field. Despite maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA, gaining admission to Northern Virginia Community College's dental hygiene program proved challenging, taking me three years to achieve. This journey taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of perseverance in achieving my goals. Throughout this time, I continued to work at Kravitz Orthodontics, where I gained practical experience and insight into orthodontic care, reinforcing my passion for dental hygiene. In January 2024, I seized an opportunity to expand my practical experience and passion for community service by volunteering with Amber Lovatos in Washington, DC, as part of a community dental screening project. This experience reaffirmed my commitment to improving oral health care accessibility and highlighted the crucial role dental hygienists play in preventive care and education. My academic journey has been marked by a strong aptitude for the sciences and a profound interest in dental health. Working at Kravitz Orthodontics has provided invaluable hands-on experience, emphasizing the significance of immaculous oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment . Looking ahead, my professional goals are centered on making a tangible impact in the dental hygiene field. I envision educating patients on oral hygiene practices, advocating for preventive dental care, and contributing to innovative research that enhances the field. Beyond clinical practice, I aim to engage in community outreach, particularly in underserved populations where access to dental care is limited. Financial preparedness is crucial to achieving my educational and professional aspirations. Pursuing higher education in dental hygiene requires substantial financial investment. This scholarship would alleviate the financial burden associated with tuition, enabling me to focus entirely on my studies and professional growth. It would also empower me to participate in extracurricular activities, attend conferences, and pursue certifications that enrich my skill set. In conclusion, my journey into dental hygiene is driven by a profound passion for oral care, nurtured by personal experiences, academic achievements, and a clear vision for the future. I am committed to making a meaningful contribution to the field through compassionate care, education, and advocacy. With financial support, I am confident in my ability to achieve my goals and create positive change in dental hygiene. This scholarship represents an investment not only in my education but also in the transformative impact I aspire to bring to the dental community and beyond.
    New Beginnings Immigrant Scholarship
My name is Darya Churikova, and my journey from Kazakhstan to pursuing a career in dental hygiene in the United States has been marked by challenges, resilience, and unwavering determination. At the age of 18, I made the courageous decision to immigrate alone to the United States in pursuit of academic and personal growth opportunities. Arriving in a new country, I encountered a myriad of challenges, including language barriers, cultural adjustments, and the daunting task of navigating unfamiliar systems. However, I refused to let these obstacles deter me from my aspirations. Instead, I embraced each challenge as an opportunity for growth and learning, drawing strength from my innate resilience and determination to succeed. In pursuit of my career aspirations, I am dedicated to academic excellence, professional development, and lifelong learning. It took me 10 years to become an American citizen, during which time I navigated the complexities of the immigration process with patience and perseverance. Future Dentists Scholarship
For many dental hygiene is the career choice; however, for me it is a calling. Ever since I was a child, I’ve always wanted to be in the medical field. This was one of the reasons why I left everyone and everything 14 years ago and moved to the United States. There are plethora medical specialties, yet I chose to become a dental hygienist for several reasons. First, I am genetically predisposed to dental decay, thus I have spent countless hours in the dental chair as a patient. Luckily, one of my best friends became a hygienist and ever since she created a special treatment plan for me, my oral health significantly improved. Second, as a child I used to be terrified of dentists. Luckily, my friend helped me to overcome my childhood fear of dental offices by being extremely kind, friendly, and sympathetic. Lastly, I am a believer in preventative care. Clearly, all these major aspects attracted my attention and made me want to do more for patients like I was once upon a time. Dental hygienists have many roles, and all of them are important. However, the role that is most important for me was not stated in Wilkins. For me, hygienists are an important link between patient and the dentist (whom most are afraid of). Thus, the most important, yet unspoken role of the dental hygienist is the to be a link between patient and the doctor, a specialist that helps to prevent and treat the disease, ease the fear, and build lifelong relationship between patient and dental office. Before I got admitted into the program, I volunteered at the periodontal office. Although it wasn’t the easiest specialty, I really enjoyed seeing the compacity of the patients’ problems and involvement of the hygienist. That ran a bell in my head “I want to work and help patients like that”. In addition to that I’ve always enjoyed learning new things. Thus, my long- term goal is to be a part of academic research. After completion of this program, I will be applying for the dental hygiene bachelor program at the ODU, and after for the master’s degree in public health. I believe that involvement in professional association is very important. Currently, I am a member of the ADHA. It not only helps with continuing education, but it also gives an opportunity for networking, as well as promoting the importance of oral health and dental hygiene. This scholarship will allow me to pay for expensive dental materials and books required for the dental hygiene program. As a student finishing the first semester, I can say that this program is extremely intense, and having financial help from this scholarship will help me to elevate finance related stress, so I can focus more on academic portion of my education.

The story of Malgorzata has many similarities with me. To start, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Darya Churikova. I am 32 years old. Even though my ethnicity is Russian, I was born and raised in Kazakhstan. When I was 18 years old, I decided to come to the United States to pursue my dream. Ever since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to be in the medical field; however, my parents were not sharing my passion for this field of education. Thus, I just like Malgorzata ventured to America with no family support. In addition to our Eastern European ethnicity, there is another similarity. Even though I have only one year of education at the Karaganda State Technical University, where is was studying to become an engineer of health and labor protection, my mother has been in that field for over 30 years now. Most of the post soviet Union countries have gender-segregated point of view on the career. Engineering is considered to be a male field, thus it takes a lot of work, persistence, and willpower for a female to get into that field and achieve a higher rank. I am grateful I inherited this quality from my mother. Moreover, reading the sentence about Malgorzata's passion for education made me feel like that sentence was written from my story as well. Besides moving to a country I have never been to before, It took me several years to get the dental hygiene program admission letter. First, I worked two jobs to support myself and be able to pay for the ESL classes. Then, I worked only one full-time job and started taking two-three classes of the prerequisites for the dental hygiene program. This process took me about three years. Then, after two years of trying to get into the program, the third was a charm. Lastly, the least pleasant and the most hurtful part of Malgorzata's story is cancer. Unfortunately, it has no preference in age, gender, or race of the person. In 2012, I lost one of my closest family members, who had an enormous impact on my family - my grandfather. When someone asks me what is my best childhood memory, I answer "Grandpa". He was the kindest, most intelligent, funny, creative and humble person. He battled stage II lymphoma cancer since 2009. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to see him again or even say my last "goodbye", due to my immigration paperwork still being in process. The life of a single immigrant is not easy, but the courage, love, and passion for education and the world makes us keep going.
    Beyond The C.L.O.U.D Scholarship
I call myself a true representation of America. My name is Darya Churikova. I am 32 years old. I was born in the Soviet Union, raised in Kazakhstan, and moved to the United States in 2010 to pursue my dream. I am the first and only person from my family, who ever moved or been to this country. Ever since I was a child, I always wanted to be in the medical field. However, due to the very low income of doctors in my home country, my parents were against me going to medical school. This was the reason why I decided to try my luck in America. After several years of waiting for eligibility to receive financial aid and grants, I started working on prerequisites for dental hygiene in 2018. Knowing that the program is very competitive, I worked diligently. I am proud of being a straight-A student. It took me three years of trying to get into the program, and this year I received a letter of admission. My journey was longer than the ordinary student's because I do not have a family here, thus I worked full-time while taking prerequisite classes. Besides studying and working, I also volunteered at one of the periodontal offices from 2018 to 2019. I enjoy studying because it is the best way to keep your brain active. I do not just have two intense years of "brain workout" at the dental hygiene program because one of my goals is to get a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene, and eventually participate in the research. Even though I enjoy taking care of patients and love to educate them about the importance of oral hygiene, I would like to be a part of something bigger. It is fascinating how much oral issues affect the other organs of the human body. This scholarship will help me to get my foot into the door of dental hygiene education because it is not easy for a single adult student, who has no family in the country, to come up with academic expenses. I consciously took the risk of being admitted into the program, just like fourteen years ago by moving to the US. It won't be an easy process, since I won't be able to support myself financially due to mandatory full-time studying. Lastly, I wanted to share my experience of personal contribution to the community. Last year I met a wonderful lady, who was an oncologist in Ukraine. Her family fled from the war. Her name was Nina. She shared with me how much she missed the medical office setup and patient care. I went above and beyond asking my manager and the doctor to give her a chance to be able to work at least part-time at the office. It was challenging because Nina had very little knowledge of the English language. I was not only an orthodontist assistant, but also an interpreter on days Nina worked in the office. However, it is priceless for me to be able to make someone's life better. To conclude, I would like to thank you for taking your time and reading my little life story. I hope that there are people, who are willing to help me like I did Nina.
