It took me 22 years to pursue higher education. Growing up, my parents didn't encourage college. I was privately schooled until high school, followed by homeschooling. Despite my desire to attend college, I lacked the knowledge and motivation. Everything changed on March 15th, 2000, with the birth of my daughter. Since then, my goal has been to be the best mother. Motivated by my maternal instincts, I enrolled in a Medical Assistance program at a trade college. Each day, I took a 5 AM bus to leave my daughter with a sitter in Compton, then commuted to Hollywood for classes. After school, I picked up my daughter and headed to my babysitting job. This routine tested my determination, especially with quick-money opportunities distracting me from my education. Sixteen years later, I found myself pregnant again, feeling isolated and disappointed. After completing a Medical Billing certificate, I worked in the field for several years. However, the COVID-19 pandemic led to depression and a doctor-mandated work hiatus for mental health reasons. This eventually led to my resignation and the threat of eviction. During this time, I found solace in prayer and reflected on my experience at Los Angeles Southwest College in 2015. The sense of community there inspired me to return. The support I received reignited my passion for education. I am fully immersed in campus life and dedicated to my studies. As the President of the Student Government, I have demonstrated strong leadership and commitment. I have achieved academic success, earning a spot on the Dean's Honor List for two consecutive semesters. I am eagerly anticipating transferring to an HBCU. If awarded this scholarship, the funds will go into a savings account through my housing program. While I love California, I want my son to have broader experiences beyond Compton. My children are exceptional; my daughter graduated from UCLA with a full scholarship, and my son attends the Charles Drew Science Academy. My journey has not been without challenges. I faced homelessness while balancing school and work. Living in shelters and relying on public assistance was tough, but it fueled my determination to create a better future. These experiences gave me a unique perspective on the importance of stable housing. I have consistently supported others, recognizing the challenges many face. I have volunteered over a thousand hours at local Veterans of Foreign War Posts and within my college community. I have guided my daughter in her educational pursuits and am seeking opportunities to further my own. My goal is to encourage my son to excel academically. I would appreciate any consideration for scholarships, grants, or fellowships, and I assure you I will use these resources effectively. I am passionate about making a positive impact in urban planning and economics. I believe in creating inclusive housing policies and working on affordable housing projects. Gentrification is another issue I care about—improving neighborhoods without displacing residents. Community involvement is key. Affordable housing is essential, and I support innovative solutions like tiny homes and co-housing communities. Sustainability is also important to me, promoting green building practices and environmentally friendly urban spaces. My passion for this field is personal—I experienced homelessness while going to school. It was challenging, but it opened my eyes to the importance of stable housing and supportive communities. Seeing the positive impact of thoughtful urban planning motivates me. I love the idea of creating functional, beautiful, and sustainable spaces. So, that's my plan—working towards a future where cities are equitable, sustainable, and vibrant for everyone. Here’s to making a difference!

Even when life threw curveballs, like the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting mental health struggles, I found ways to bounce back. I took a break, reflected on my goals, and eventually returned to Los Angeles Southwest College, where I felt a strong sense of community. Now, I'm fully immersed in campus life, serving as the President of the Student Government, Chair of the Student Parent Caucus for SSCCC, and making the Dean's Honor List two semesters in a row. It's all about staying focused, giving my best effort every day, and not letting setbacks define me. Giving back to my community is something I hold close to my heart. I've volunteered over a thousand hours at local Veterans of Foreign War Posts and within my college community. Organizing community events and providing support to students has been incredibly rewarding. For example, I helped organize events that attracted over 200 attendees and connected resources from 10 non-profit organizations. These experiences have honed my skills in communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. One of my proudest achievements is submitting a resolution to the Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) advocating for student parents. My goal is to support student parents in California Community Colleges and hopefully inspire national policy changes to better support student parents across the country. It's a cause that's really close to my heart, and I'm excited about the potential impact it could have. Looking ahead, I plan to continue my advocacy work by pushing for more comprehensive support systems for student parents, including affordable childcare, flexible class schedules, and financial aid tailored to their unique needs. I also aim to collaborate with other student leaders and organizations to amplify our voices and create a broader movement for change. My ultimate goal is to see these initiatives adopted at a national level, ensuring that student parents everywhere have the resources and support they need to succeed. I also guide my children in their educational pursuits. My daughter graduated from UCLA with a full academic scholarship, and my son, who is passionate about science, attends the Charles Drew Science Academy on Saturdays. I want them to have broader experiences beyond Compton and to excel in their academic endeavors. My commitment to supporting others extends beyond my family. I recognize the significant challenges that many individuals face, and I strive to make a positive impact wherever I can. Putting my faith in God has been a cornerstone of my journey. It's what has brought me this far and continues to guide me through life's challenges and triumphs. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase." This faith has influenced my decisions, giving me the strength to persevere through tough times and the courage to pursue my goals with determination and hope. I believe that with faith, dedication, and a supportive community, anything is possible. In short, I strive for excellence by staying committed to my goals, overcoming obstacles, and continuously supporting those around me. It's about making a positive impact, both in my personal life and within my community. Whether it's through my academic achievements, leadership roles, or volunteer work, I aim to exemplify a spirit of excellence and give back to my community in meaningful ways.

I would appreciate any consideration for scholarships, grants, or fellowships, and I assure you that I will utilize these resources effectively and responsibly.

It has taken me 22 years to pursue higher education. Growing up, my parents did not encourage college, and I was privately schooled until high school, followed by homeschooling. Despite my longstanding desire to attend college, I lacked the necessary knowledge and motivation. But everything changed on March 15th, 2000, with the birth of my daughter. Since that day, my foremost goal has been to be the best mother I can be. Driven by maternal instincts, I pursued a Medical Assistance program at a trade college. My routine involved an early 5 AM bus to leave my daughter with a sitter in Compton, followed by a commute to Hollywood for classes. Post-class, I'd retrieve my daughter and proceed to my babysitting job. The journey was draining. Numerous hurdles, especially the temptation of quick money, derailed my educational goals. Despite multiple efforts to resume schooling, I succumbed to this lure repeatedly. Sixteen years on, I faced pregnancy again, alone and filled with self-disappointment. After earning a Medical Billing certificate, I was fortunate to work in the field for several years following my son's birth. However, the COVID pandemic impacted us, leading to depression and a doctor-mandated work hiatus for mental health. Subsequently, I resigned amid looming eviction. In this period of uncertainty, I found solace in prayer and reflection on my brief time at Los Angeles Southwest College in 2015, where I had experienced a strong sense of community. This inspired me to return, and the college's warm reception and support reignited my pursuit of education. I am deeply engaged in campus life and committed to my academic work. As the Administrative Vice President of the Student Government, I have demonstrated leadership and dedication. My academic achievements include being named on the Dean's Honor List in my first semester, and I am looking forward to transferring to an HBCU. Should I be granted this scholarship, the funds will be allocated to a savings account established through my housing program. Although I cherish living in California, I aspire for my son to have broader experiences beyond Compton. Both my children possess exceptional intelligence; my daughter completed her degree at UCLA with a full academic scholarship, and my son, who has a passion for science, attends Charles Drew Science Academy on Saturdays. Despite the numerous challenges life presents, my dedication to aiding others never falters, knowing well that many require more help than myself. I've committed over a thousand hours of volunteer work at local Veterans of Foreign War Posts and within my college community. Additionally, I've guided my daughter towards her educational goals and am now seeking the necessary resources for my own academic journey. My goal is to motivate my son towards scholarly success. I would be deeply grateful for any scholarships, grants, or fellowships, promising to utilize them to their fullest potential.

I have been on a 22-year journey to attain a higher education. My parents did not support my college aspirations during my childhood, and my educational experience consisted of attending a private school until high school, followed by homeschooling. Despite my lifelong desire to pursue higher education, I lacked the guidance and motivation to make it a reality. However, everything changed on March 15th, 2000, when my source of inspiration arrived in the form of a baby girl. Since then, my primary focus has been on being the best mother I can be. The father of my daughter had a turbulent history with the law, and my parents disowned me due to my decision to have a child outside of marriage. At 20 years old, I found myself with a newborn and no support system, except for the assistance provided by the county. My motherly instincts kicked in, and I had no problem complying with the county's requirements. I enrolled in a trade college for Medical Assistance. To get there, I had to take a bus at 5 AM to drop my daughter off at a sitter's place in Compton. Then, I would take another bus to Hollywood for classes. After school, I would pick up my daughter and head to work, where I babysat other kids. It was exhausting. Several obstacles caused me to abandon my pursuit of a degree. The biggest distraction was the allure of quick and easy cash. Despite several attempts to return to school, I constantly fell victim to this temptation. And 16 years later, I found myself once again pregnant, single, confused, and disappointed in myself. After the birth of my son, I earned a certificate in Medical Billing and secured a position in that field. However, during COVID, both my son and I were impacted. I battled with depression, and my doctor advised me to take a break from work for mental health reasons. After resigning from my job and facing eviction, I found myself contemplating my future. It was during this time that I couldn't shake the memories of my brief time at Los Angeles Southwest College in 2015. I was deeply moved by the profound sense of community that drew me back to the institution. My initial point of contact was the Gateway program, and the warmth and acceptance I experienced there equaled the love I received from my children. Their open-armed welcome and unwavering encouragement reignited my passion for education. My time here at LASC has been the best experience of my entire life. I am heavily involved on campus and dedicated to my assignments. Currently, I serve as the Administrative Vice President of the Student Government. During my first semester, I made the Dean's Honor List and plan to transfer to HBCU Wiley in Texas. If I receive this scholarship, it will be deposited into a budget-saving account through my housing program, Jovenes. While I love California, I want my son to experience more than his environment in Compton. Both of my children are highly intelligent. My daughter graduated from UCLA on a full academic scholarship, and my son attends Charles Drew Science Academy on Saturdays because he loves science. My daughter has also taught me about obtaining equal higher education opportunities. Besides my children, I represent LASC and all the resource centers in the student service building that have been helping me along my educational journey to which I’m fully dedicated. Receiving the Debra S. Jackson New Horizons Scholarship as a 44-year-old single mother would be an incredible honor and greatly appreciated.
