One meaningful act of support that I have offered someone is when I helped my older brother walk. My older brother was diagnosed with bone cancer in the beginning of 2023. This aggressive disease eventually took over his body, giving him severe pain in a lot of his bones. He would spend almost all of his time in a reclining chair because moving hurt too much. However, slowly walking for a little bit every few hours would ease some of the pain, as well as help him mentally. My little sister and I offered to help walk with him one day when our parents were not home. We worked together to lift him out of his chair and to his walker. Once out in the hallway, we each got on one side of him and put his arms around our shoulders to balance his weight. Standing on our tippy toes, because of how much taller he was than us, we walked back and forth with him in the hallway for around 10 minutes. From his grunts and moans, it was clear this would be my last time walking with him. This moment was, and still is, so important to me because it helped me realize how often I was taking my healthy body for granted. It taught me how relying on loved ones for help isn't shameful, but beautiful because it shows that you have people who care and would walk to the ends of the earth for you.
I bring people together and create a place of belonging through sports, specifically football. I am in my fourth year in the Utah Girls Tackle Football League where I have learned hard work, dedication, grit, and how to control where I focus my energy and emotions. As a second-year captain, I pride myself in knowing all my teammates by name, reaching out to them outside of football, and getting to know them personally at team dinners. I enjoy helping my teammates through struggles or confusion during practices or games, as well as making it clear that they can do the same thing for me. I remind my teammates that just because they don't have the captain title, doesn't mean they can't be a leader. I want to be a good teammate because I have been positively impacted by teammates in the past. I remember how welcomed and loved I felt when I first came to my team, and I want to give that feeling to everyone else. A side effect being a well united team is that we play better football because we know we have each other's backs. Everyone's love for football and character has brought us close together outside of football as well. I know the kindness and inclusiveness I show and give to my teammates will make football more enjoyable for them but will also inspire them to pass on the same goodwill and love to others in their lives.
