Eldorado Tools: The Build and Make Scholarship
My chosen field of study—Turfgrass Science and Management, with a focus in landscape construction—represents more than just working with soil, stone, and plants. It’s about shaping outdoor spaces that are sustainable, functional, and built to last. As someone who has been passionate about building things from a young age, I view landscape construction as a unique intersection of creativity, environmental responsibility, and skilled craftsmanship. Through my education at the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at UMass Amherst and my hands-on experience in the field, I’ve learned how important it is to design and build with the future in mind. Whether I’m working with natural stone, building outdoor living areas, or installing native plantings that support local ecosystems, I’m always thinking about long-term value—how these spaces will hold up over time, how they will serve the people who use them, and how they will impact the environment. Construction is evolving, and landscape construction is no exception. We’re facing growing challenges like climate change, water scarcity, and urbanization, and it’s clear that the next generation of builders must lead with sustainability at the forefront. My goal is to be part of that movement by using low-impact materials, integrating green infrastructure, and promoting practices that reduce environmental harm while still delivering high-quality, beautiful results. In the future, I hope to run my own sustainable landscape construction company—one that offers environmentally conscious services to residential and commercial clients. I want to create outdoor spaces that people enjoy and take pride in, while also making sure those spaces contribute positively to the environment. That might include installing permeable pavers to reduce runoff, using organic practices to care for turf and plantings, or sourcing local materials to cut down on emissions. I want my work to demonstrate that sustainability and strong design can go hand in hand. This scholarship would help me continue my education without the financial strain that often comes with pursuing a degree. With less financial pressure, I’ll be able to focus more on learning advanced construction techniques, expanding my design skills, and taking part in research or internships that allow me to explore innovative approaches to sustainable construction. Every opportunity I get to learn or work in this field brings me closer to my long-term goal of leading impactful, responsible projects in the real world. Receiving this scholarship would not only support my academic journey—it would help me grow into a builder of the future: someone who understands the technical side of construction but is equally committed to improving the industry through sustainable and thoughtful practices. I want to be a part of reshaping how we build, and this scholarship is a crucial step in helping me get there.

From a young age, I was drawn to building things—whether it was stacking rocks, making forts out of scrap wood, or digging up the backyard to create something new. I would take whatever I could find around the house and turn it into a project. As I got older, that early curiosity developed into a passion for construction, particularly in the landscape field. I chose to pursue a career in construction because I love the process of taking an idea and turning it into something tangible and lasting. Over time, that interest evolved into landscape construction, where I discovered the unique satisfaction of transforming outdoor spaces. There’s something powerful about seeing a once-empty yard become a place where people gather, relax, and make memories. Through my work in landscape construction, I’ve learned how to combine design, engineering, and hands-on craftsmanship. Whether it's setting natural stone for a walkway, grading a site for proper drainage, or installing native plantings, each part of the process requires skill, planning, and attention to detail. What excites me most is not just the technical side, but the opportunity to use my knowledge to build meaningful spaces that families will enjoy for years to come. Pursuing this path has given me a sense of purpose. I’m not just working with my hands—I’m contributing to the environment, enhancing communities, and creating spaces that have real value. I plan to continue expanding my skills, learning from experienced professionals, and eventually lead my own projects and teams. My ultimate goal is to run a sustainable landscape construction company that builds with both beauty and environmental responsibility in mind. Construction is more than just a job to me—it’s a calling that began in childhood and continues to grow every day I’m in the field.

From an early age, I have understood the value of hard work, community, and the impact that a well-maintained landscape can have on people’s lives. As a student at the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I have dedicated myself not only to my studies in landscape but also to serving my community through my involvement with Alpha Tau Gamma, my agricultural fraternity. Through this organization, I have had the opportunity to give back in meaningful ways, strengthening my leadership skills, deepening my appreciation for teamwork, and reinforcing my commitment to making a difference through my work. One of the most impactful projects I have been involved in is the design and renovation of the Happy Frog Garden in Northampton, Massachusetts. This garden serves as a vital donation center, providing fresh produce to help feed the hungry in surrounding communities. Our fraternity worked tirelessly to improve the garden’s layout, enhance soil conditions, and ensure that it could yield a bountiful harvest for those in need. Seeing firsthand how our efforts directly contributed to food security in our area was incredibly rewarding. It reinforced my belief that landscaping and agriculture can play a crucial role in supporting and uplifting communities. In addition to our work at the Happy Frog Garden, my fraternity also gives back to our local police and fire stations. Each fall and spring, we conduct seasonal cleanups, removing leaves, debris, and preparing the landscape for the changing seasons. In the spring, we go a step further by planting perennial plants, adding beauty and life to the properties of those who dedicate their lives to protecting and serving our community. These projects not only allow us to express gratitude to first responders but also bring our fraternity members together in a shared mission of service. Through my volunteering experiences, I have learned the value of teamwork, organization, and the positive impact that even small acts of service can have on others. I have also realized that community service extends beyond a single act—it is an ongoing commitment that requires dedication and effort. These experiences have solidified my belief that the work I do in turf and landscape management can extend far beyond aesthetics; it can create functional, sustainable, and nourishing spaces that benefit individuals and communities alike. Moving forward, I plan to continue my work helping others by staying involved in community service initiatives wherever I go. As I pursue a career in landscape construction and sports turf management, I intend to integrate service projects into my professional life. Whether it’s through organizing volunteer landscaping efforts for local parks, contributing to urban greening initiatives, or mentoring young students interested in the field, I want to use my skills to give back in meaningful ways. Ultimately, I believe that the best way to serve is to use one’s talents and passions for the betterment of others. For me, that means continuing to use my knowledge of landscaping, turf management, and sustainable agriculture to improve communities, create beautiful and functional outdoor spaces, and ensure that green spaces remain accessible to all. I am grateful for the experiences I have had so far, and I look forward to expanding my impact in the future.

I’ve always had a deep connection to the environment, growing up surrounded by the beauty of plants, trees, and landscapes. My love for nature began early, from helping my family with garden maintenance to spending hours in the woods building things with whatever I could find. It wasn’t until I began studying at the Stockbridge School of Agriculture that I realized how this love could evolve into a lifelong career. I received an associates degree in Landscape Contracting last spring and I am currently pursuing my bachelors degree in Turfgrass Science and Management, and with every class and project, my passion for the landscape industry grows stronger. The landscape industry is about much more than just aesthetics—it's about creating functional, sustainable environments that enhance people’s lives. It’s about transforming spaces, both private and public, into areas where people can connect with nature, relax, and thrive. As I’ve learned more about turf management, plant care, and sustainable practices, I’ve developed a clear vision of how I want to contribute to the industry. I want to help create spaces that not only look beautiful but are also environmentally responsible and accessible to all. My experience as the Vice President and Treasurer of the Alpha Tau Gamma fraternity has been an integral part of my growth. Leading community service projects, like fall cleanups at local police and fire stations, has given me a unique perspective on how landscaping can make a tangible difference in people’s lives. It’s not just about planting flowers or trimming hedges—it’s about making sure those spaces are cared for and respected. This has inspired me to pursue a career that blends my passion for landscaping with my desire to give back to the community. One of the biggest issues in the landscape industry is the environmental impact of traditional practices. Many of the chemicals and techniques used in landscaping can harm ecosystems, pollute waterways, and waste precious resources. I’m committed to working toward a more sustainable landscape industry. I plan to focus on promoting the use of native plants, sustainable irrigation systems, and organic lawn care methods that can reduce chemical usage and water consumption. I want to be part of a movement that encourages more eco-friendly landscaping practices, ensuring that our green spaces are not only beautiful but also sustainable for future generations. Beyond sustainability, I’m also passionate about making landscaping more accessible. Many landscapes are designed with beauty in mind, but I want to ensure they’re also practical and accessible for people of all abilities. Whether it’s creating wheelchair-friendly paths, selecting non-toxic plants for homes with children and pets, or designing spaces that encourage outdoor living, I want to make sure that everyone has access to the beauty of nature, no matter their physical capabilities. My ultimate goal is to work in landscape construction and turf management, specifically focusing on sports turf and large landscaping projects. Whether it’s designing athletic fields, community parks, or private properties, I want to bring a thoughtful, sustainable approach to every project I take on. In the long run, I hope to help set a new standard for what landscapes can be—spaces that bring people together, promote well-being, and support the environment. I’m excited to continue my journey in the landscape industry and am confident that with my passion, skills, and commitment to sustainability, I can make a meaningful difference. This isn’t just a job for me—it’s a calling, and I’m eager to see where this path takes me.
