My goal in healthcare is not only to provide medical services but to be an advocate. I want to provide representation to other women who look like me. My future goal as a health professional is to work in dermatology. African-Americans are the least represent the racial group in this specialty. With this lack of representation, it is harder for African- Americans to get quality treatment. I want to be remembered as an influential member of my community that can help others achieve their goals. My interest in medicine came from my love for science. I have always thought of science as my favorite subject since I have been in school. As I got older I gained most of my interest in biology, chemistry, and the details of anatomy. I think the body works in mysterious ways and it is fascinating to me. Seeing that I had a definite passion for science I looked into the many fields that were related. Medicine is closest related to my personality and lifestyle. I took this and decided to look more into the medical field. I was amazed by all the different types of doctors I could be. Furthermore, I attended a medical program where I learned about different areas in the medical field. During this program, it drove me to like cardiology and gain an interest in dermatology as well. This opened my eyes to all that medicine has to offer, which also brings me to a program like this. It deepened my passion for medicine and becoming a doctor. Secondly, I want to pursue a career in medicine because I like to care for people. I am considered a leader in many of my working environments because I don’t mind guiding others to be better. I genuinely like to make people feel better and that is what the medical field is all about. I think being able to offer people advice every day and having the ability to give them more time in their life would be life-changing. I think my passion for caring for people stems from being a caretaker in many relations in my life from my friends, coworkers, and family. Even in times of medical emergencies I usually try to come up with what could be wrong and take down symptoms to see what could possibly be wrong. The medical field would provide me with the opportunity to do that every day. While an undergrad I work with a non-profit called the Body Empowerment project that helps young adults learn about their bodies and respect their bodies. I want to continue to help young adults and complete community activities while using my platform as a health profession. With this scholarship, I will be able to continue my education and successfully reach my goals.

As a first-generation college student, the college experience has been different for me. When entering college I didn’t have the background knowledge needed to excel academically and navigate in this new environment. Since I am a first-generation college student the financial obligation for my education is more than expected. It has been a struggle to keep up with the financial requirements of a high-level institution. Many of the financial obligations were unexpected and have been a growing expense and I am struggling to maintain control. Therefore, scholarships like these can help me continue my education and fulfill my purpose. As a minority woman, I experience how poverty affects my community and my life. With my interest in STEM, it has always been a challenge to get the information needed to grow in my desired field. Pursuing a career in STEM can help me serve my community and educate others on how to elevate as a minority in the STEM field. Therefore, if granted this scholarship I will be able to finish getting my degree and further my network in order to help others. Once, I receive my degree I plan to go to medical school and become a doctor. After finishing my education I plan to go back and teach in a minority area to provide minorities with education about their health and STEM fields. When selecting an undergrad school, I knew I wanted to be in a diverse, inclusive environment. I wanted to stay in a city that felt much like home. When moving to Philadelphia I not only wanted to take this opportunity to extend my career but also to connect with other minorities in the field. I have joined organizations like the National Council of Negro Women and the Be Body Positive Project to connect with other black women. Being a part of these organizations provides me with opportunities to network with people in my community along with giving back to younger girls. These organizations have allowed me to respect all backgrounds people may come from and educate them on my experience as well.
