Being a Hispanic woman in architecture means having a unique perspective and the power to positively impact the field. As a Latina, I am conscious of Latinx often being overlooked and underrepresented contributions in architecture. Growing up, I did not see many people that looked like me in the field as a Hispanic female, making me feel like architecture was not a viable career. I am determined to use my voice and this career to change the narrative and make architecture a more inclusive and accessible field for Latinx people. Additionally, I want to create a space where the beautiful culture and art of the Latinx community are represented respectively. Growing up in El Paso, Texas, I got to experience firsthand the beauty of Mexican culture, from the vintage buildings to the stories told by my grandparents. My culture is something I am incredibly proud of, and I would love to share these stories through art. One specific way is the art of architecture. I want to create structures that tell stories passed down from generation to generation. Allowing the rest of the world to experience the culture I adore and provide more representation for my community. I plan to make a difference in my career by promoting equity and equality in the architecture field. I plan to increase access to resources and mentorship opportunities for Latinx students and professionals within this field. I will advocate for more Latinx representation in decision-making to ensure our voices and needs are heard. Additionally, I will work to create more affordable and equitable housing solutions for Latinx communities. To ensure the inclusivity and recognition that these communities deserve. I will be the voice for younger Latinx generations to look up to. I am committed to creating inclusive and culturally responsive design solutions that unite Latinx culture and the built environment. By incorporating Latin influences into the design process, I can develop projects that reflect the spirit and needs of my community. By doing this, I can create meaningful and inspiring spaces for Latinx people to thrive. While combining culturally significant traditions with modern designs, I will make a concept where the culture is appreciated while still relevant. Being a Latina in architecture means using my unique perspective and skillset to create positive change in the field. I plan to make a difference by advocating for more significant equity and access in architecture, promoting Latinx representation in decision-making roles, and creating culturally responsive design solutions.
