Fear overwhelms me as I step up to the unfamiliar piece of equipment. The machine appears similar to a 1990s computer – but with a touchscreen. I keep my eyes locked on Dr. Karine Guerrier as she instructs me how to use the pacing machine. I listen to her directions intently. Tap S1. Change pacing to 200. Start. Stop. While we attempted to send him into atrial fibrillation, my eyes bounced between her and the machine. The process is compared to a video game: up, down, up, up, down; my fingers rapidly tapped the arrows, pushing his heart rate to 300 beats per minute. Stop. His ablation was successful. My ablation was not successful. I have been on both sides of the experience: patient and observer. Being diagnosed with a heart condition is never easy, especially at ten years old. Unaware of the lifelong consequences, I spent most of my middle school years adapting to the many limitations thrust upon me. This heart condition halted my childhood. I was benched from playing my favorite sport. I was unable to ride the roller coasters I wanted. I was required to sit on the sidelines and watch everyone else have fun while I was trapped in my self-pity. The ablation was my glimmer of hope. After two weeks of rest, life would be back to normal. I would run freely without every adult watching me as if I was going to explode. I would sit in class without wearing a clunky, annoying heart rate monitor. I would no longer be the sick girl. News of the failed ablation drained all of my hope. Volleyball was no longer feasible. On the school field trip, I would have to film my classmates riding the roller coaster. Watchful eyes would follow me everywhere; even swinging became a concern for the adults. Anything could trigger an episode – especially moments of adrenaline. I would always be a ticking time bomb, waiting for the next explosion to occur despite my best efforts to diffuse it. Over time, new activities replaced the lost ones. Roller coasters became museums full of history and culture. Theatre mic packs swapped places with heart monitors. Playing volleyball turned into cheering on my classmates and dancing in the stands with the cheerleaders on Friday nights. As my support for my peers grew, I gained encouragement from them, challenging me to face life without hesitation. The careful watch of adults transformed into proud gazes at my achievements. Teachers guided and mentored me to strive for excellence. My fear shifted into confidence as I came to terms with the reality of my own mortality. I do not take life for granted, and I seek gratitude in every situation. My heart is ready to face the difficulty of the rigorous medical pathway ahead. The STEM program, research opportunities, and commitment to an environment of innovation and exploration lead me toward my goal in life: healing young hearts. By pursuing a career in pediatric electrophysiology, I want to diagnose, treat, and cure children – leading them to happier, healthier lives. This scholarship will provide me with the ultimate opportunity to be generous – in every way possible.

My entire life, I have struggled with my mental health in the face of a major heart condition called Wolf Parkinson White syndrome. From a young age, I lived in constant fear that my abnormal heartbeat could lead to sudden cardiac arrest and death at any moment. The condition caused my heart to beat irregularly and rapidly, leading to debilitating palpitations, shortness of breath, chest pain and exercise intolerance. For many years, I had no choice but to accept that my heart would dictate how I lived my life and the risks I could take. Navigating my heart condition through childhood, adolescence and now young adulthood has taken an immense psychological toll. Constant worry about my health left me anxious and depressed. I felt different from my peers and was unable to participate fully in activities like gym class or sports. The isolation and lack of control over my condition left me feeling hopeless at times. My mental health struggles greatly impacted my self-esteem and confidence. Seeking treatment through failed medical procedures only exacerbated my mental anguish. When I was in grade school, I underwent an ablation procedure intended to burn away the extra pathway in my heart causing the irregular beats. However, the location of the pathway was too close to my natural pacemaker, making it impossible to treat surgically without risking heart block. Waking up from the procedure knowing it had not worked and my condition remained untreatable was devastating. I spiraled into one of the deepest depressions of my life, feeling like my future had been taken from me. Thankfully, through counseling and support from family and friends, I was eventually able to accept my condition and focus on living well despite it. Volunteering with children who faced illnesses even greater than my own helped shift my perspective. I realized that though my heart presented daily challenges, I was otherwise healthy, intelligent and capable. This new mindset allowed me to pursue my passion for pediatric medicine. My personal experience with mental health as both a patient and caregiver has profoundly shaped my career path and relationships. I want to study to become a pediatric cardiologist. My goal is to help other children and teens struggling with cardiac conditions avoid or overcome the psychological trauma I endured. I want to offer support, hope and individualized treatment plans that consider both physical and emotional needs. Volunteering at the pediatric cardiology department of my local hospital has reinforced my calling. Through shadowing physicians, I see firsthand how a lack of mental health support can negatively impact treatment outcomes. Patients who feel hopeless or anxious about their condition are less likely to stick to medical regimens. With compassion and psychosocial care integrated into their treatment, recovery seems smoother. This experience has shown me where the current system is failing youth and how I can work to remedy it. Now when people close to me face struggles with their mental wellbeing, I am able to support them through empathetic listening and advice based on my own journey. By sharing my story openly, I hope to reduce stigma and encourage others toward treatment instead of suffering in silence. My goal is to make the field of pediatric cardiology more holistic and help many other families avoid or rebuild after the same trauma my own withstood. Through continuing education, volunteering, advocacy and future clinical practice, I aim to revolutionize cardiac care for children to consider both the heart and the mind as one.

Though mental health challenges cannot be avoided altogether, through community support and careers that heal, we can bring light where there was once darkness. My hope is that by sharing my story, others may also find the strength to rise above struggle instead of being defined by it.

When I was in grade school, I was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW), a heart condition where an extra electrical pathway causes my heart to beat too fast. This has been a significant obstacle in my life and driven me to pursue a career in pediatric cardiology. Growing up, I experienced episodes where my heart would suddenly start racing at over 280 beats per minute. This caused me to feel weak, dizzy, and short of breath. After many tests, doctors determined I had WPW. They recommended an ablation procedure to burn away the extra pathway using catheter ablation. Unfortunately, when they went in, they found my pathway was too close to the natural pacemaker of my heart. Performing the ablation carried too much risk of damaging my heart's natural rhythm. This was devastating news. Living with an undiagnosed heart condition caused anxiety about when the next episode might occur. I worried what stresses might trigger it and if it could eventually cause permanent damage. After many discussions with my cardiologist, we decided to carefully monitor it and only perform the ablation if episodes became too frequent or severe. This meant living with the uncertainty of not knowing when my heart might suddenly start racing out of control. But it also lit a fire in me to help kids facing similar challenges. From that point on, my ambition was to become a pediatric cardiologist. I threw myself into my studies, maintaining straight A’s to stay on the path to college and eventually to medical school. In my free time, I volunteered over 400 hours shadowing my cardiologist at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis. This experience strengthened my resolve to specialize in pediatric cardiology. Nothing was more rewarding than helping ease the fears of young patients and their families. I saw firsthand how critical the role of a pediatric cardiologist is in their care. In addition to academics and clinical experience, I use art as an outlet. Growing up with a heart condition caused bouts of anxiety and uncertainty. Art provided an escape and way to process my emotions. In high school, I joined various theater productions where I found community and joy. Whether acting on stage or helping backstage, theater has been integral to my mental health and personal growth. It taught patience, teamwork, and how to channel my passion into creative outlets. While my heart condition presented obstacles, it has also driven me to work harder than ever to fulfill my dreams of becoming a pediatric cardiologist. My thirst for knowledge and commitment to helping kids fuels my ambition. Unfortunately, the high costs of medical school will be a significant financial burden for my middle class family. This scholarship would help alleviate that burden and allow me to focus fully on my education. Just as the palliative care team was a miracle for the McCormack family during their darkest time, this scholarship could be a miracle for helping me achieve my life's purpose of diagnosing, treating and healing young hearts. I hope to one day leave a lasting positive impact through my career, just as James Gabriel’s short life continues to do through this memorial scholarship.

My heart condition and failed ablation procedure presented an immense obstacle that I have worked diligently to overcome through perseverance, dedication to my health, and embracing new opportunities for personal growth. As someone pursuing a career in cardiac science, this experience has profoundly shaped my passion and determination. In grade school, I began experiencing episodes of abnormal heart rhythm. After numerous tests, I was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a condition where the heart beats too fast. My doctors recommended an ablation procedure to scar the tissue causing the irregular heartbeats. Unfortunately, the ablation failed to resolve my arrhythmia episodes. This was devastating news that clouded my future prospects and plans. How could I pursue my dream of becoming a cardiologist if my own heart was unreliable? Rather than accept limitations, I adopted strategies to regain control. I met regularly with my electrophysiologist to refine treatment plans and monitor my condition. When episodes occurred, I carefully tracked my symptoms to share diagnostic details with my doctor. I also modified my lifestyle through diet, exercise and stress management techniques. Most importantly, I remained optimistic that with time and medical advances, a solution would be found. This determined approach has paid off. Post-ablation, I am delighted to report that my arrhythmia episodes have become much less frequent with improved management. My condition no longer holds me back from seizing opportunities. I am the co-president of HOSA at my high school and volunteer regularly at a local cardiac clinic, experiences that have further fueled my passion for cardiology. In addition to inspiring my career path, my SVT experience has driven me to give back through community service focused on heart health education. During high school, I volunteered over 400+ hours with local charities. I assisted with educational workshops, fundraising events and health screenings. I am committed to expanding access to cardiovascular resources, just as the Motwanis sought to expand access to opportunities through education. This experience has fueled my passion for cardiovascular science and a desire to help others overcome heart-related obstacles. While it was scary and frustrating at the time, facing and resolving a major medical issue at a young age has given me resilience and strategic problem-solving skills that I will carry into my future career. Like Bulchand and Laxmi, who courageously sought safer opportunities abroad despite barriers, I am determined to pursue my goals and make meaningful contributions through research. I hope to one day develop new treatments that can provide relief for patients struggling with heart conditions, as research gave me hope during my own health challenges. Just as the Motwanis courageously pursued educational opportunities despite facing persecution, I am driven to pursue my dreams of a career in cardiovascular science and giving back through community service. My personal health obstacle and volunteer experiences have ignited within me a fierce dedication to helping others, just as others helped me through my own challenges. I hope to honor the Motwanis’ enduring legacy of service, leadership and passion for expanding access to resources through my future contributions in the field of heart health.
