Giving back, to me, means showing up where the need is greatest and using my skills to create a positive impact on the lives of others. Whether I am working chairside in a volunteer dental clinic or mentoring students in the classroom, my focus is on empowering others with the knowledge, confidence, and care they need to improve their health and well-being. Service has never felt separate from my career. It is woven into how I lead as an educator and advocate for both patients and future providers. Currently, one of the primary ways I give back is through my role as coordinator of the Helen M. Nickless Volunteer Dental Clinic. In this position, I oversee the planning, management, and operation of a clinic that provides essential dental care to underserved members of our community completely free of charge. I have expanded the clinic to also serve as an engaging learning site for dental hygiene, dental assisting, and pre-dental students in my community. By dedicating over 10 hours a week, my responsibilities include coordinating patient and student schedules, managing clinic operations, maintaining community partnerships, and ensuring that patient care is delivered safely, ethically, and with dignity. Beyond logistics, I work closely with students to help them understand the importance of service-based care and the responsibility that comes with treating patients who may face significant barriers to accessing health services. As coordinator, I have been actively involved in expanding the reach and impact of the clinic. This has included strengthening partnerships with local organizations, increasing clinic efficiency to serve more patients, increasing community awareness of the connection between oral and systemic health, and advocating for institutional support to sustain and grow the program. Through these efforts, we have been able to broaden access to preventive and therapeutic dental services while providing students with meaningful, real-world experiences that reinforce patient-centered care, cultural competence, and professionalism. Watching students gain confidence while seeing patients improve their quality of life by regaining comfort and function of their oral cavity is one of the most rewarding aspects of my role. Looking to the future, I plan to continue expanding my impact by strengthening educational programs and community-based clinical opportunities. I hope to further develop service-learning models that connect students with populations in need while reinforcing the value of prevention, education, and access to care. By mentoring students and supporting clinics that serve vulnerable communities, I believe I can create a ripple effect that extends well beyond my direct reach. My long-term goal is to help shape a generation of compassionate, skilled dental providers who are committed to improving health outcomes, reducing disparities, and giving back to the communities they serve. Thank you for supporting my graduate-level studies!

Before I ever stepped into a dental setting, I learned the genuine impact of helping people feel capable of taking ownership of their health. As an undergraduate student, I worked as a high-energy group fitness instructor, where I quickly realized that change does not come from simply telling people what to do. It comes from meeting people where they are, listening with an open mind, and empowering them with the knowledge and confidence to achieve their goals. Watching clients build healthier habits and begin to recognize their own potential is what truly sparked a passion that has stayed with me and continued to grow throughout my career. That same philosophy has guided my work in clinical dental hygiene. I chose to spend a significant portion of my clinical career in a periodontal specialty practice, working with complex patients. I found the greatest fulfillment in helping individuals understand their oral health, connect it to their overall well-being, and set goals that felt both realistic and motivating. During my years in clinical practice, I discovered that no matter how fantastic my clinical skills were, the patient connection was equally as important (if not more). In recent years, this focus has expanded into my role as an educator. I am driven to help students develop the same mindset by teaching them how to support patients in reaching their goals, not just completing procedures with precise clinical skills. Though technique is important, I am hopeful that by emphasizing critical thinking, empathy, and confidence, students will develop a passion for patient-centered care. I strive to ensure students are developing their clinical skills through my DH with Danni content, while also encouraging them to see that each mouth they treat belongs to a human being with unique values and life experiences that deserves the highest standard of care and compassion. Through my graduate studies, I hope to deepen my ability to lead, mentor, and create valuable learning experiences that intentionally blend clinical skill with human connection. I plan to continue growing in curriculum development, evidence-based teaching strategies, and leadership. I am especially motivated to utilize my graduate research to further expand the volunteer dental clinic I currently coordinate, increasing access to care for the community while creating meaningful learning opportunities for students. In the next chapter of my career, I hope to step into additional leadership roles within my dental hygiene program, bringing with me a strong foundation built through advanced education. Ultimately, through my academic work and volunteer efforts, I hope to contribute to the future of dental hygiene education by leading with both skill and heart. By empowering students to help patients meet their goals, I aim to support the development of confident clinicians, lifelong learners, and prevention-focused providers who will go on to make a lasting impact in their communities. Thank you for the opportunity to support my graduate-level education.
