Your Dream Music Scholarship
For the past three months, around the time my junior year of high school started, I have been haunted by the impending doom of college being the final factor in the separation of my current clique. The rose-colored glasses that I have been metaphorically wearing for the past seven years are slowly, but surely, being removed. The thought of starting fresh, away from the loving and endearing people I have come across these past 16 years has initiated a notion of unbearable grief. As Taylor Swift released 𝘔𝘪𝘥𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴, her record-breaking 11th studio album, she included track five, "You're On Your Own, Kid."
"You're On Your Own, Kid," signifies a moment Swift had to endure hardships concerning advancing forward to an environment where she could continue to grow. The lyrics, "So make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it. You've got no reason to be afraid. You're on your own, kid, yeah you can face this," showcases the direct message Swift is trying to instill. In my situation, this song motivates me to wake up every day, without fear, and compose as many memories with my friends as I physically can. With lyrics intertwined in the song's bridge, "And I saw something they can't take away, 'cause there were pages turned with the bridges burned. Everything you lose is a step you take," stands for the importance of making memories. As I navigate the last few years I have left in my small town, I find comfort in knowing that, from this song, I will eventually be okay because I have reminiscences of precious moments. I realize now that even the burdens I soon face will be worth it, and I will nevertheless manage to grasp onto my sentimental childhood.
