The interaction between humans and technology has always been a burgeoning interest of mine. At this point in humanity's narrative, technology holds a very dominant position. There are a myriad of directions that technology's ever-changing presence could take us. There are apprehensions, aspirations, qualms and queries. One thing, perhaps the only thing, that we can be certain of, is that there will always be a connection between humans and technology. This connection is incredibly intriguing to me. Of course, there are many ways that this connection manifests. Specifically, my interest lies with that of user interface and user experience. Is it as adventurous an interest as, say, the connection between humanity and technology via space exploration? Probably not. Is it as groundbreaking an interest as, say, the connection between humanity and technology in the medical field? Again, probably not. But that doesn't mean it isn't valuable. In fact, I think it is the most valuable aspect of technology now, and I think it will remain that way for as long as humanity and technology intertwine. For something that seems so simple, user interface and user experience design are some of the most fundamental bases for technology's creation and use. Both these designs dictate how humanity interacts with the technology it creates. There IS no interaction without an interface, without a seamless experience when using it. Whether it's space exploration or medical examination or something that we haven't even conceived of yet, we cannot embark on anything without walking the pathway between humans and technology. I believe user interface design and user experience design create those pathways. One of the simplest example of this pathway is, of course, a website. I am fascinated by what goes into the creation of a website. Why does one colour work more than another? Why does one font surpass another? When is scrolling a better option than clicking, and vice versa? All these questions are the paving stones for the pathway that a human traverses to understand the website they use. And there are so many more questions like them. I want to understand those questions. I want to know which ones I should ask in addition to the ones I listed. More than that, though, I want to be able to answer those questions, not just for myself, but for others. Again, it may seem like a very simplistic interest to hold, when the world of technology is a kaleidoscope of opportunity and fascination and intrigue. But, in my opinion, what is that world without bridges to attain it, and what are those bridges without the building blocks of user interface and user experience design to create them?
