Imagine being in the cockpit of a Cessna 172, flying at nine thousand feet, with nothing but the clear blue sky in front of you. Now, picture returning to the ground, assembling in formation, and being briefed on a new search and rescue operation. This is the reality of being a member of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, where I’ve gained invaluable leadership skills. Through experiences like flying a Cessna under the guidance of an instructor and training for search and rescue operations, I have developed into a well-rounded cadet, learning to lead and inspire others while tackling real-world challenges.
I joined CAP as a freshman, driven by a passion for aviation and an admiration for CAP’s core values of integrity, volunteer service, excellence, and respect. The organizational principles immediately resonated with me. During my first meeting, I was overwhelmed by the new environment and unfamiliar drill commands, which were similar to JROTC commands. However, as I progressed, I earned the rank of Cadet Staff Sergeant, a position that places me at the front of the formation during drills. This role has been instrumental in developing my leadership and coordination skills. As the first to respond to commands, I learned the importance of thinking quickly and maintaining organization, knowing that even a small mistake can disrupt the entire group.
A pivotal moment in my leadership journey came when I was admitted to the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) in my junior year. The school’s residential nature meant I could no longer attend local CAP meetings, causing me to miss critical events like promotions and community service activities. I recognized that my commitment to CAP was important, so I made the decision to continue participating by switching to the GSSM online program. This decision taught me the valuable lesson that sometimes sacrifices must be made for the greater good. While education took priority, I was able to balance both commitments by adapting and persevering.
As a Cadet Staff Sergeant, I gained confidence and honed key leadership qualities. Being at the forefront of the formation has taught me the importance of projecting a positive image, as I represent my flight. Quick decision-making is another skill I’ve developed, especially when I need to make decisions on the spot to ensure the safety and efficiency of the formation.
These leadership skills are directly applicable to my future in college. As a college student, my ability to lead groups and ensure the safety and success of my peers will help me excel in group projects and student-led organizations. The collaboration and communication skills I’ve gained in CAP will enable me to thrive in team environments, while my decision-making abilities will allow me to tackle academic challenges with confidence and creativity. Moreover, my passion for aviation will provide me with a unique perspective in discussions, bringing an added dimension to any conversation.
In conclusion, the leadership experiences I’ve gained through CAP have equipped me with the tools to succeed both in college and beyond. Whether it’s quick decision-making, effective collaboration, or taking responsibility for the safety of others, the lessons I’ve learned in CAP will continue to shape my approach to leadership and my future endeavors. I am confident that the skills I’ve developed will allow me to make a positive impact in any academic or professional setting.
Scorenavigator Financial Literacy Scholarship
Living away from home in a residential school recently gave me the opportunity to test my financial literacy. Until that point, I had little experience with managing money, as my parents handled all financial decisions for me. However, once I had to manage my resources independently, I quickly realized that I was unprepared. I needed help, so I turned to my parents for guidance. It was a wake-up call: I was not as financially competent as I thought. I understood then that financial literacy was crucial for making informed decisions about how to spend money to achieve my goals.
I learned that being financially literate is not just about how much money someone has, but how they manage it. Financial literacy equips us with the tools to make informed choices, prioritize spending, and plan for future needs. It’s essential for managing present expenses, such as bills and basic needs, while also preparing for long-term financial goals. It also helps develop an attitude toward money—understanding that how we manage money today affects our future. By becoming financially literate, I gained more confidence in my ability to handle finances independently and build a secure financial future.
I began to apply my parents’ advice by cutting down on unnecessary expenses. I started making shopping lists to avoid impulsive purchases and focused on prioritizing important expenses like bills, food, and clothes. I also made sure to save a small portion of my money, rewarding myself for sticking to my budget and achieving academic goals. These small changes helped me take control of my spending and become more responsible with my money.
As a teenager, I’m still tempted to spend on things I want, especially since my basic needs are covered by my parents or the school. However, when I transition to college life, I’ll face a higher cost of living, especially for housing, which will account for most of my expenses. This will force me to be more disciplined with my spending. With a set budget, I’ll have less money to spend on luxuries, making it easier to prioritize needs over wants. This shift will help me manage money more effectively and avoid the temptation to overspend.
Looking ahead, I plan to graduate college debt-free. To achieve this, I’m applying for as many scholarships as possible to minimize student loans. I also intend to use credit cards responsibly by paying off balances immediately and taking advantage of cashback rewards. This will help me build a strong credit score, which will be important for major future purchases, such as buying a car. Eventually, I hope to save enough to make a down payment on a house, avoiding the long-term cost of rent.
My goal is to use the financial knowledge I’ve gained to make better decisions, avoid impulsive spending, and save for the future. I want to prioritize my needs over my wants and start saving early so I can secure my financial future. Owning a home will provide long-term stability and save money in the future. By practicing good financial habits now, I am setting myself up for a more independent, financially secure life.

Another valuable lesson I’ve learned from my parents is the importance of balancing work and personal life. They showed me that taking time for small pleasures, like hiking, fishing, traveling, and spending time with family, is just as essential as professional success. To me, success is not just about accomplishments; it’s about maintaining balance, being healthy—physically, mentally, and emotionally—and pursuing meaningful goals. Simple moments in life can be the biggest successes, and maintaining well-being while striving toward a goal is part of what I consider success.
A key aspect of my career aspirations involves addressing a critical issue: the inaccessibility of healthcare in the United States. Many people hesitate to seek medical help due to high costs, and I want to explore how we can make healthcare more affordable and accessible for everyone. I hope to combine technological advancements with creative ideas to improve the system, and to do that, I know I need to work hard, start early, and understand my values within the broader scope of this challenge.
Pursuing knowledge in the medical field, understanding its social components, and learning about the current healthcare system’s implications will help me work toward making healthcare more equitable. College will be a crucial step in this journey. It will not only provide me with the knowledge and tools I need to achieve my career goals but also broaden my intellectual horizons. Scorenavigator Financial Literacy Scholarship
I recently had the chance to prove how financially literate I am by living in a residential school away from home. Until that point, I had no experience with spending money as my parents were the ones that made these decisions for me. When I had to manage my resources independently, I realized I needed help and I turned back to my parents. I realized I was not very competent in this area and I needed to change that. I learned from them that being financially literate in this society gives me the necessary tools to make informed decisions about how I spend money to achieve my goals. The attitude toward money is essential. It is not only about how much money one individual makes or has, but how the money is spent and saved for current expenses (wants and needs) and future situations. Being financially literate helps me acquire knowledge, become more independent in managing monetary resources, building a good credit score and increasing confidence in my financial future. Overall, it makes me feel in control of my finances.
Gradually, I started putting into practice my parents’ advices and limit my spending on unnecessary things, make trips to the store with a pre-made list and stick to it, prioritize my expenses starting with bills, obligations, needs (such as food and clothes), small savings and occasionally small rewards for sticking to my initial spending plan or for getting a good score on a test.
Of course, being teenager, I am tempted to spend more on what I like than on what I need, given the fact that my fundamental needs are still covered by my parents or school (for housing costs). However, once I make the transition to live in a campus as a college student, I expect I will be better equipped to handle money than I was when I moved to my current residential high school. Why? Because I will need to spend more money on housing (which represents the majority of costs for young people). Consequently, I will have less money to spend on my small pleasures or wants. That will make the decision process easier for me as I will not have too much left. Having a set amount of money and planning to avoid borrowing will help.
I plan to be debt free when I graduate college and avoid loans. Therefore, I am applying to as many scholarships as I can. I also plan to use credit cards with cash backs and pay them on time to avoid interest charges. That will increase my credit score and prepare me as a trustworthy person for the moment I want to make bigger purchases such as a car. Ulterior to that, I plan to spend money on making the down payment for a house so that I will avoid paying rent.
I also plan to use what I learned to make better decisions, stay away from making impulsive purchases, prioritize needs versus wants and save for future by starting early in life. Having a house on my own will save money on the long run and I plan to start early.
