One of the educators who had a significant impact on my growth as a student is Mr. Kumar. What distinguished him was his commitment to making sure that we actually understood the material, instead of just memorizing it. I used to think it was enough to just get by with surface-level knowledge, but Mr. Kumar pushed me to be more analytical. He made it so that if I didn't fully understand a topic, I couldn't just advance. His methodology was to ask questions constantly that made me challenge everything I felt I had grasped. At first, this was annoying, but as time passed, I grew to recognize that his style was actually allowing me to gain a better grasp of the material. Through his demanding yet supportive teaching, I learned to embrace challenges instead of avoiding them. I came to appreciate the process of battling difficult problems because it meant that I was truly learning. Mr. Kumar's confidence in my potential made me more resilient and allowed me to handle academic difficulties with a better attitude, one that I now apply to all new experiences.
A particular example that comes to mind as a difficult learning experience was when I was captain of the varsity soccer team during my sophomore year.
My team had been practicing for months to compete against a specific defense, and in our first tournament, we ended up playing that defensive style every game and we lost the first two matches.
In those matches, the coach simply urged me to step up my communication with the offense and build some energy for the team. In the final game of the day, I was so engaged in self-criticism that I wasn't able to lead. My coach took me out of the game, and I was benched for the rest of it. Despite the fact that he scolded me for not playing well enough, I understood that I couldn't let my team see me down, as I was the captain. I had to regain my focus and be a good role model. I approached my coach, talked to him, and he reinstated me in the game. I made it a point from then to communicate effectively with my teammates and be positive. Even though we lost the game, I was able to learn a good lesson in perseverance and how to respond to negative criticism.
The reason I chose to pursue Mechanical Engineering is that I have always wondered how things work. My father taught me how to repair and maintain vehicles when I was a child, and I liked to comprehend the mechanics of everything. When I got older, I realized that my curiosity could be built into a career where I would have the opportunity to make a real difference. I am currently pursuing Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Electric Vehicle Technology because I see the potential to revolutionize the automotive industry in a more sustainable and efficient way. I would love to help improve the design and performance of electric cars, making them more reliable, efficient, and affordable for more people. By coupling my studies in engineering with my passion for sustainability, I hope to be involved in creating a cleaner, more efficient tomorrow in transportation. I believe that my studies will allow me to be involved in a community and a world that is more aware of its environmental impact while remaining receptive to innovation.
