After nine months, my step-father brought me back to South Carolina, where my academic and personal struggles continued. Despite being held out of school my freshman year and enduring severe abuse, I managed to excel academically. This tumultuous period instilled in me core values of resilience, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to my education. Despite the hardships, I graduated high school in 2020 with a 4.0 GPA and nine hours of college credit, even after being considered a dropout. I took the SAT and scored impressively, reflecting my determination to excel despite adversity. My academic journey continued at Keiser University, where I earned an Associate of Science in Medical Billing and Coding with a 3.6 GPA. My membership in the National Honors Society of Leadership and Success and Phi Theta Kappa further attests to my dedication to academic excellence. My ultimate dream is to become an Ophthalmologist. I lost my mom at 14 to suicide. I also attempted suicide myself the month before. I truly believe hers is the reason mine never happened. I was in 8th grade and was about to go into high school. I grew up in South Carolina and now I was being forced to move with my grandmother who lived in Florida. She did not want me to talk to my friends or family back home, because she wanted me to move on. She even asked me to start calling her "mom." I ended up hyper-fixating on my education since I lost everything else. I graduated in 8th grade with the highest English and History grade in the entire grade level. My grandmother threw me into a group home just a couple of months after my mom's death. She abandoned me there. My step-father back home ended up getting custody of me right before freshman year started. He kept me out of school for the year, so I could take care of him, myself, and my sisters. I was then moved to my biological father's right before what would've been my sophomore year. I was placed back into school. I signed up to take online classes throughout the semesters and during the summers. I was able to catch back up and graduate with my class. I was a Teacher Cadet with the College of Charleston. I was also in the Zoology program where we volunteered at Charleston Animal Society. I graduated with a 4.0 GPA and with over nine hours' worth of college credit. I decided to take a gap year, as Covid had just hit. I was placed in a kinship home during my senior year of high school. I moved out when I turned 18 and was declared independent by financial aid. I recently earned my AA of Science in Medical Administrative Billing and Coding in October 2022 with Keiser University. I was on Dean's List. I was also inducted into Phi Theta Kappa and The National Society of Leadership and Success. I was recently accepted into the Medical University of South Carolina for my BS of Science in Health Care Studies. I am an aspiring ophthalmologist because I want to be able to help people see the world better. If it wasn't the loss of my mother at a young age, I truly do not believe I would have became as resilient, motivated, and dedicated to grow this strongly as an individual.
