New Jersey New York First Generation Scholarship
Being a first-generation college graduate would mean everything to me. It represents more than just earning a degree it would represent the sacrifices, struggles, and hopes of my parents, who immigrated from Ecuador. They came to this country with limited resources but an unwavering belief that education could create opportunities for their children that they never had. Growing up, I watched them work tirelessly to provide for my family, often putting our needs before their own. Because of this, graduating from college would not only be a personal achievement, but a way to honor their hard work and show that their sacrifices were not in vain. For my family, my success will open doors for future generations. It will set a new standard and serve as an example for my younger brother, showing him that higher education is possible with determination and perseverance. Being a first-generation college graduate means breaking barriers and proving that where you come from does not define where you can go. It motivates me to push through challenges and remain focused on building a better future not only for myself, but for my entire family. My extracurricular activities have played a significant role in shaping who I am today. During my freshman and sophomore years, I was a member of the White Plains Varsity Swim and Dive team. This experience taught me discipline, resilience, and time management. Balancing early practices, competitions, and academics required dedication and strong work ethic. There were moments when it was physically and mentally challenging, but I learned how to push through and stay committed to my goals. Being part of a team also taught me accountability and the importance of supporting others. In addition to swimming, I was actively involved in cheerleading throughout high school. I participated in varsity basketball cheerleading during my freshman year and later joined varsity football cheerleading during my junior and senior years. Cheerleading helped me build confidence and step into leadership roles. Performing in front of large crowds and supporting my team during games taught me how to stay composed under pressure and maintain a positive attitude. It also strengthened my communication and teamwork skills, as success depended on trust and coordination with my teammates. Outside of school, volunteering has been one of the most impactful parts of my high school experience. I have volunteered at soccer academies, including the White Plains Youth Soccer Academy, where I assisted with developmental programs as well as spring and winter break camps. I also volunteered with Soccer Futures, helping run clinics for younger children. In these roles, I was responsible for setting up equipment, checking in participants, organizing drills, and assisting with distributing food and water. Beyond these tasks, I focused on creating a supportive and encouraging environment for the kids. Working with younger athletes allowed me to develop patience, leadership, and empathy. I enjoyed helping them build confidence, improve their skills, and feel excited about participating. These experiences showed me the importance of giving back to my community and using my time to positively impact others. Overall, my extracurricular activities have helped shape me into a hardworking, responsible, and motivated individual. They have taught me valuable life skills such as leadership, perseverance, and teamwork, while also allowing me to grow as a person. Combined with my identity as a first-generation student, these experiences have strengthened my determination to succeed. I am committed to continuing this journey in college, where I will work hard, stay involved, and use my education to create meaningful opportunities for myself and others.

For as long as I can remember, my parents have worked tirelessly to give my family opportunities they never had. As immigrants from Ecuador, they came to this country with little, but with hope, resilience, and a deep belief that education could change everything. Growing up, I watched them sacrifice their time, energy, and comfort to provide for me, my younger brother, and my older sister. Their hard work is the foundation of my dreams, and it is the reason I am determined to pursue higher education. As a first-generation college student, attending a four-year university is more than just a personal goal, it is a responsibility I carry for my family. I plan to study business because I want to build a stable and successful future. I am passionate about learning how to lead, manage, and create opportunities, and I hope to one day use my education to give back to my community and support other families who face financial challenges like mine. However, the path to achieving this dream is not easy. The colleges I have been accepted to cost around $85,000 per year, a number that feels overwhelming for my family. My parents are already paying for my sister’s college tuition, and by the time I begin my first year, she will be in her fourth year. At the same time, they care for my younger brother who is 9 years old and manage the daily responsibilities and all of the monthly expenses of our household. Despite everything they do, the financial burden of supporting two college students at once is simply too much. I see the stress this puts on my parents, even when they try not to show it. It motivates me to work harder, but it also reminds me that I cannot do this alone. I do not want my education to come at the cost of my family’s stability, or do I want to begin my future weighed down by overwhelming debt. This is why receiving this scholarship would mean so much to me. It would not only ease the financial burden on my family, but it would also give me the opportunity to fully commit to my education and future. I am a dedicated and driven student who takes pride in being responsible, hardworking, and resilient. I have always looked for ways to grow, whether through academics, volunteering, or helping others, and I am committed to making the most of every opportunity I am given. More than anything, I want to make my parents proud. Their journey has not been easy, but they have never given up, and neither will I. I want to be an example for my younger brother, showing him that our circumstances do not define our future. I want to prove that the sacrifices my parents made were not in vain. This scholarship would bring me one step closer to turning my dreams into reality. It would allow me to pursue my education with purpose, without fear, and with the ability to focus on becoming the best version of myself. I am not just pursuing a degree, I am working toward a future that honors my family’s sacrifices and creates new possibilities for generations to come.
