While my mother stayed at home, we only had one source of income and had to eat simpler, more economical meals. We also had to manage restricted financial resources, not being able to acquire essentials such as utensils, cleaning supplies, and laundry detergents. My dad will often travel over an hour to find employment. Our food during the spring season usually consists of beans, eggs, and tortillas. I grew up with the faith of Christianity. My family and I attend the local St. Aloysius Church and we have been participating since before I could even walk. I have had the privilege of being baptized and completing my first communion at this church. Additionally, at this current moment I am working on obtaining my confirmation. Ideally just because you go to church does not mean that you’re automatically a good Christian. I would like to emphasize however that due to my faith and my growing up experiences have led me to become passionate in being a caring person who wants to help those in need. However, the first year of my confirmation classes, I began the in depth journey of understanding the word of God and of his disciples. Within my second year of my confirmation classes I was able to understand the stories within the bible and I soon began to see it as an opportunity rather than a chore. In high school, forcing myself to speak in front of enormous crowds was one of my greatest successes. According to some definitions, bravery is "The quality or state of having or exhibiting mental or moral strength to face danger, fear, or difficulty. " Without bravery, I would not have advanced as quickly in my academic career. Through bravery, I have learned to demonstrate grit, diligence, and consistency in making time for myself. I have found myself never being comfortable in one position, instead, enjoying life with those around me, and reminding myself to always stay curious and learn something new every year. In middle school, I was more of a mute person. I cared more about my academics rather than sports, but in clubs I felt more successful. Only once I pushed beyond my comfort zone to take part in "children's book,” an opportunity to share the book and read with children for a TSA competition. This led to us winning first place in the state and qualifying for nationals, but due to covid we didn't have the opportunity to compete in nationals, it however inspired me to get more involved in competitions. During my freshman year of high school, I was still in quarantine, which made me more frustrated about the fact that I could only sit in bed and browse the internet while ingesting "cycles" which hurt my academics. "My grades aren't really impressive." I told myself that as a freshman with a 2.7 GPA. I knew I needed to get more involved and improve my academics. During my sophomore year I wanted to improve my academics but still wanted to get involved with sports & clubs. In order to do so it required a lot of bravery on my part. For example, I wouldn't have been able to join the swim team without bravery, even though I had no swimming experience knowing it was a competitive sport. I took the risk and became a competitive swimmer at the end of my highschool career. Without being brave I wouldn't have joined two clubs “Future Farmers of America'' & “Anime Club” and gained hands-on experience. With my clinic, there will also be family events and group sessions to better help educate families on their animal health care. I grew up valuing my life regardless of my socioeconomic status, but I had self-doubt when it came to planning my future. I often asked myself how far I would be able to get. My self-doubt grew stronger when I discovered my passion for working with animals, as I wondered how I could possibly obtain a doctorate. However, with my family's encouragement, I started looking for loopholes, such as applying for scholarships and joining clubs and sports. I even began taking more rigorous courses to better my chances of becoming successful. As a restless teenager, this was challenging, but I refused to let my financial status hinder my progress. Throughout my academic career, I discovered that I enjoy learning beyond the classroom. While in high school, I experienced various challenges and realized that to participate, I needed to push myself outside my comfort zone. Dedicating my time and efforts to clubs has enhanced my communication skills and helped me speak in front of large crowds. In total, I joined eight clubs, which increased my commitment and confidence and allowed me to gain four officer leadership positions, teaching me the power of leadership and self-confidence. I am very proud to support my community. My involvement in clubs taught me to value community outreach and engagement. A club project was hosting a pet supply drive and giving donations to the Yakima Humane Society. As a result, I have volunteered at our annual Spring and Fall community clean-ups, assisting in graffiti removal and keeping my local community clean and waste-free. I also volunteered at my local food bank allowing me to assist those in need in any necessary way. I have even helped local elementary schools by guiding students through various career possibilities. I would like to mention my support at the Toppenish Rotary. I was able to assist community residents while also teaching students how to serve drinks/dinner to the residents, I will continue to support my community, just as I have over the past four years. What I've learned from assisting my community is that spending just a few hours a day to be kind to others can make a significant difference in making our community a better place. Helping the community has made me more selfless and empathetic towards those in need. Being a first-generation student in the family and coming from parents who immigrated to the United States for a better future for their children, I have significantly learned to value my education. I know my parents will not be able to provide for me as much as they would like. To make ends meet, we have also had to seek assistance from the federal SNAP/EBT program. FAFSA will also not show you the weekly visits to the food bank, our means to ensure we have food for the week. Their dedication and hard work have brought me to want better opportunities my parents weren't able to obtain.   I aspire to become a veterinarian doctor in hopes of one day opening my own clinic. My interests in veterinary science cannot be placed solely on one thing because multiple factors have contributed to my desire to pursue veterinary science. In many countries, health care for pets is a disparity. Animals, unfortunately, do not have the same level of care as humans. At a young age, I noticed the lack of services for pets in my surrounding area, noting that there are only two emergency vet clinics within the Yakima Valley area. There have been incidents where families have had to travel to Pullman, Washington, in order to receive proper care and treatment for their pets. Additionally, caring for these animals might seem confusing and scary; however, due to limited access to model veterinarians, many pets are left feeling scared and confused. This is why I aspire to use my college education to bring a humane level of care and consideration to all animals in surrounding communities. I will further my education by specializing in orthopedics for small animals. To ensure my success as a scholar, I am researching what it takes to become a veterinarian while also becoming familiar with the courses I may have to take. In preparation for my future, my short-term goal is to obtain experience as a veterinarian assistant in the summer after graduation. I will then pursue my education with a bachelor's in animal science. As a long-term goal, I plan to apply to veterinary school to become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). I look forward to returning to my hometown after graduation and working at a clinic that assists understaffed medical facilities and animals in need. With my education, I intend to reach a huge portion of my community by opening my own veterinary clinic. I intend to care for all animals and expand the level of care being provided. I plan to continue this and help advocate for those animals in need and giving donations to shelters in need. One of my closest family members growing up was my godmother. Through her work I witnessed various procedures, my favorite being preparing for surgery and helping calm down the patients. Through her I was able to job shadow, allowing me the opportunity to get a glimpse of what a “normal” day at the clinic would look like. Seeing firsthand the strong bond between animals and veterinarians inspired me to pursue a career in the veterinary field. I intend to pursue a doctorate in Veterinary Medicine upon graduating high school in June 2024. I will further my education by specializing in Orthopedics for small animals. I grew up with the faith of Christianity. My family and I attend the local St. Aloysius Church and we have been participating since before I could even walk. I have had the privilege of being baptized and completing my first communion at this church. Additionally, at this current moment I am working on obtaining my confirmation. Ideally just because you go to church does not mean that you’re automatically a good Christian. I would like to emphasize however that due to my faith and my growing up experiences have led me to become passionate in being a caring person who wants to help those in need. As mentioned previously, I grew up in a religious household. At a young age I couldn’t comprehend why we were forced to attend every Sunday mass. However, the first year of my confirmation classes, I began the in depth journey of understanding the word of God and of his disciples. Within this year at some point it began to seem less repetitive, I was able to grasp onto the words that they were preaching. Within my second year of my confirmation classes I was able to understand the stories within the bible and I soon began to see it as an opportunity rather than a chore. This helped me become more empathetic and compassionate towards others. I would like to think that my faith has led me to pursue my passion in helping animals in need. With my passion of helping those in need I intend to obtain a PhD in Veterinary Science. I know that my faith will help guide me through this extensive journey. Additionally, I know that I envision myself not only working closely with the animals but with their owners as well. With my compassion for animals and people, I understand that a pet isn’t just an animal, they are also a member of our families. They help bring many families together and even create communities. As a Vice President for SkillsUSA I have collaborated with the Yakima Humane Society to help those voices that cannot speak for themselves. I took initiative for national pet month which is held in November. We anticipate receiving donations for food supplies, blankets, cleaning supplies etc. I also collaborated the idea of volunteering our time through the weekdays. This allows SkillsUSA students to receive community service hours while also allowing us the opportunity to spend quality time with pets. In high school, forcing myself to speak in front of enormous crowds was one of my greatest successes. According to some definitions, bravery is "The quality or state of having or exhibiting mental or moral strength to face danger, fear, or difficulty. " Without bravery, I would not have advanced as quickly in my academic career. Through bravery, I have learned to demonstrate grit, diligence, and consistency in making time for myself. I have found myself never being comfortable in one position, instead, enjoying life with those around me, and reminding myself to always stay curious and learn something new every year. In middle school, I was more of a mute person. I cared more about my academics rather than sports, but in clubs I felt more successful. Only once I pushed beyond my comfort zone to take part in "children's book,” an opportunity to share the book and read with children for a TSA competition. This led to us winning first place in the state and qualifying for nationals, but due to covid we didn't have the opportunity to compete in nationals, it however inspired me to get more involved in competitions. During my freshman year of high school, I was still in quarantine, which made me more frustrated about the fact that I could only sit in bed and browse the internet while ingesting "cycles" which hurt my academics. "My grades aren't really impressive." I told myself that as a freshman with a 2.7 GPA. I knew I needed to get more involved and improve my academics. During my sophomore year I wanted to improve my academics but still wanted to get involved with sports & clubs. In order to do so it required a lot of bravery on my part. For example, I wouldn't have been able to join the swim team without bravery, even though I had no swimming experience knowing it was a competitive sport. I took the risk and became a competitive swimmer at the end of my highschool career. Without being brave I wouldn't have joined two clubs “Future Farmers of America'' & “Anime Club” and gained hands-on experience. Putting myself outside of my comfort zone made me realize I enjoy learning & expanding my knowledge while also being social. Transitioning into my junior year I continued to strive to push myself to obtain new knowledge while also excelling in the previous academics. For instance, joining eight clubs was a great example of bravery for me because it allowed me to interact with other students while also competing in competitive events. Being in an officer position for three clubs have helped me gain experience and knowledge, while also helping me become more responsible and giving me more confidence. Furthermore, I plan to pursue a profession in Veterinary Science. My educational goals include obtaining experience during the summer working at a clinic as a Veterinarian assistant before attending a University to earn a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science or Biology. I plan to apply at a veterinary school to become a DVM and graduate. I intend to further my education and specialize in Orthopedics for small animals. I will come back to my hometown and be able to work at a clinic in Yakima to help many more animals in need and Clinics that are understaffed with doctors. After working in a Vet clinic and gaining knowledge in the field, I plan to open my own clinic in Yakima to give back to my community. My education and experience will also enable me to pick up new skills and educate my community on how to treat their animals with much more care.
