Bio

Vision, grit, passion, and heart. These are all qualities I’ve witnessed and emulated from my mother who is an educator. As a result of her career advancement, I had to experience transience. Due to my dedication to myself and the community, I was accepted into a 12-seat medical program with 2 slots available. However, I had to move. Moving from environments that thrived in diverse cultures, to areas that were far less diverse could have diminished my spirit, but I decided to be resilient and strive to continue at my best anyway, making a comparable schedule at my new school. I make it a point every day to better myself and uplift those who surround me because that is the legacy I desire to impress upon this world. Having the opportunity to advance my education is a vital achievement I yearn to accomplish and I refuse to let tribulations deter me from achieving my aspirations. I am an individual who embodies a balance of humility, compassion, integrity, and initiative. I want to make not only my mother proud, but myself as well, and I know that I can! No matter the circumstance or situation, I am confident in my ability and I’m determined to make things happen for me and refuse to focus on what’s happening to me. The world is my canvas, I am the artist of a distinctive and beautiful picture!

    ESOF Academic Scholarship
From earning my CNA and seeing a glimpse of what the medical and science field has to offer, has positively impacted my life. With the knowledge and experience I have attained from the program, I can assure you the valuable skills I have learned will be used to leave a lasting impact on my community. Every day, individuals die from lacking the vital skills that could save a life, but due to this program, I can now make a difference when given the opportunity. Having the aspiration to make a difference in the field of medicine as a dermatologist, I strongly desire to attend a school that embodies the characteristics that align with my values, ethics, and morals. Ultimately, my goal is to improve treatment in prevention and intervention for the greater good of the community of minorities. We are often undervalued and not considered people of beauty as the current societal standards are set. We are the forethought, not an afterthought. Success in dermatology requires a plethora of experiences among diverse people. It's incumbent upon me to have an understanding of how to reach people through true lived experiences and foundational training. Subsequently, I will be a well-rounded doctor, thus enabling me to make a lasting impact as a trailblazing dermatologist. Having the opportunity to advance my education is a vital achievement I yearn to accomplish and I refuse to let tribulations such as financial setbacks deter me from achieving my aspirations. I have the innate ability to stand in the face of adversity and know that everything will work out with time and dedication. During the past year, I have had to face the challenges of moving from an environment that thrived in diverse cultures to an area that is far less diverse, battling to come to terms with the tragic and unexpected loss of an uncle, along with witnessing the unbearable pressure on my mother taking in her nephew and raising 3 kids alone. Experiencing these hardships could have diminished my spirit, but I made the conscious decision to be resilient and strive to be the best person I can be. I make it a point every day to better myself and uplift those who surround me because that is the legacy I desire to impress upon this world. I am an individual who embodies a balance of humility, compassion, integrity, and initiative. I want to make not only my mother proud, but myself as well. No matter the circumstance, I am determined to make things happen for me and refuse to focus on what’s happening to me. With the help of the ESOF Academic Scholarship, I would be able to attain my dream of attending the illustrious Spelman College and become closer to my goal of honoring my family and myself, through a successful future. Spelman is a prestigious institution with a legacy of educated, impactful women and has a track record for producing influential women in STEM. As an individual with an irrepressible desire to represent the underrepresented in the dermatology field, I am eager to take advantage of any opportunities that can help me attain my goals. Attending Spelman would allow me to advance in my career path and ultimately, be a voice for the voiceless. To know I would be surrounded by women who represent similar backgrounds is inspiring. Spelman will challenge me academically and provide robust opportunities along my educational journey. I admire the rich and noble history of this institution. These are only some of the reasons I yearn to continue my education at Spelman College in particular. With over 500 hours of community service, the most memorable experience I have so far of giving my time would be from earlier this year in February. Due to earning my CNA, I offered my time to help with the Heritage Hall Nursing Home Ball in King George, VA. I spent eight hours preparing residents for their special day and uplifting their spirits as I got them ready. I changed briefs, gave baths, dressed residents in their gowns and suits, transferred residents from their rooms, and renovated their cafeteria into a beautiful ball setting. The turnout was a heartwarming success and I will never forget the smiles on all the residents’ faces. For many of the residents, it had been years since they dressed up and went to any type of formal dance. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to make a difference in their lives by supporting them in a way they couldn’t support themselves and witness them make another core memory. This is only a glimpse into why I respect and love the health care and science field. It is my dream to become a part of the health field as a dermatologist and continue to impact lives for the better!
    Hubert Colangelo Literacy Scholarship
Since infancy, my mom has encouraged me to set limitless expectations. For that specific reason, I have set goals for myself of going to an esteemed college, becoming a dermatologist, and having a rousing impact in the world of medicine. Proudly, I’ve learned this confidence and gained this passion to succeed directly from my mom. Having the opportunity to advance my education is a vital achievement I yearn to accomplish and I refuse to let tribulations such as financial setbacks deter me from achieving my aspirations. I have the innate ability to stand in the face of adversity and know that everything will work out with time and dedication. With the help of this scholarship, I would be able to attain my dream of honoring my family and myself, through a successful future. The key to all my success is my mother. I watch her in admiration of how she pushes through fatigue to support her family. Because of her sacrifices, I can tackle my vigorous course track in academia, manage my successful lash extension business on my own, and volunteer in my community every chance I get! My mother motivates me to be known for something more than another statistic, and continuing the legacy of an unfaltering, powerful, independent woman.

Ultimately, my goal is to improve treatment in prevention and intervention for the greater good of the community of black and brown people, but in particular, black and brown women. I currently own a lash extension business to empower women one lash at a time. I understand the overwhelming pressure society forces onto women to look presentable despite being degraded by societal standards. Therefore, I created a lash extension business to build the confidence of women in my community. The way you envision yourself can deeply impact more than your mood, it can also impact how productive you are on a daily basis. For many years, beauty has been an outlet for women throughout the world. My company offers a safe haven for women to be pampered and afterwards, feel rejuvenated and more confident. In the future, I plan on opening my own private practice where I can treat women medically with my dermatology license, and offer services like a spa and lash extension salon to release stress. Having the opportunity to advance my education is a vital achievement I yearn to accomplish and I refuse to let tribulations such as financial setbacks deter me from achieving my aspirations. I have the innate ability to stand in the face of adversity and know that everything will work out with time and dedication. As well as honoring my family and myself, through continuing the legacy of powerful independent women.
    Michael Mattera Jr. Memorial Scholarship
Life is often unpredictable, and sometimes it throws challenges at us that we never imagined having to face. For me, one of the most difficult experiences was the sudden death of a beloved family member. In the wake of this tragedy, my family was left not only emotionally devastated but also grappling with the harsh reality of financial instability. However, with the help of the Michael Mattera Jr. Memorial Scholarship I will be able to conquer this adversity and build for a better future. The loss of my family member was not just an emotional blow; it also brought with it a cascade of financial burdens. As the primary breadwinner of our household, their sudden absence left a significant void in our income. Overnight, we found ourselves struggling to make ends meet, facing mountain bills, and worrying about how we would afford even the most basic necessities. In the aftermath of this loss, I was thrust into a position where I had to take on greater responsibilities at home while also trying to continue my education. Despite the overwhelming grief and financial strain, I was determined not to let these challenges derail my dreams of a better future. However, the reality was harsh, and the financial burden weighed heavily on me. Navigating the complexities of grief while also trying to secure a stable future through education has been an uphill battle I have juggled multiple part-time jobs often sacrificing sleep and personal time to ensure that my family’s needs are met. Yet, despite my best efforts, the financial strain has continued to loom large, casting a shadow over my academic pursuits. This scholarship opportunity represents more than just financial assistance to me; it is a beacon of hope in a time of darkness. With the help of this scholarship, I will alleviate some of the financial burden that has weighed heavily on my family. It will provide me with the opportunity to focus more fully on my education and pursue my academic goals without the constant worry of financial instability. Moreover, receiving this scholarship would not only alleviate my immediate financial concerns but also open doors to a brighter future. With a degree in hand, I am determined to break free from the cycle of poverty that has gripped my family. I aspire to build a better life not only for myself but also for those I love, honoring the memory of the family members we lost by striving for a better tomorrow. In conclusion, the sudden death of a family member plunged my family into a state of financial turmoil, presenting us with challenges that seemed impossible. However, through perseverance, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to my education, I have refused to let these obstacles define me. This scholarship represents an opportunity to overcome the adversity that has plagued my family and pave the way for a brighter, more prosperous future. With your support, I am confident that I can continue to defy the odds and achieve my dreams. I have the innate ability to stand in the face of adversity and know that everything will work out with time and dedication. No matter the circumstance or situation, I am confident in my ability and I’m determined to make things happen for me and refuse to focus on what’s happening to me.

The word empowerment is a noun. When I think of the word empowerment, my mother instantly comes to mind. Since infancy, my mom has encouraged me to set limitless expectations. Proudly, I’ve learned this confidence and gained this passion to succeed directly from my mom. My mother has persevered through many hardships while sacrificing so much for me and my siblings, and for that, I am eternally grateful. It’s because of her I am the woman I am today. Having the opportunity to advance my education is a vital achievement I yearn to accomplish and I refuse to let tribulations such as financial setbacks deter me from achieving my aspirations. I have the innate ability to stand in the face of adversity and know that everything will work out with time and dedication. Because of her sacrifices, I am able to tackle my vigorous course track in academia, manage my successful lash extension business on my own, and volunteer in my community every chance I get! The characteristics I have emulated from my mother have allowed me to be exposed to endless opportunities. I admire her strength and tenacity. She has never led me to danger, bewildered my mentality, or encouraged dishonest behavior. My mother does not embody the trait of mediocrity and neither do I. Her influence rushes through my blood, motivating me to be known for something more than another statistic, and continuing the legacy of an unfaltering, powerful, independent woman. I don't know where I would in life without my mother's influence. She is the definition of a powerful woman.

With the help of the John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship, I would be able to attain my dream of attending the illustrious Spelman University and become closer to my goal of honoring my family and myself, through a successful future. Spelman is a prestigious institution with a legacy of educated, impactful women and has a track record for producing influential women in STEM. Having the aspiration to make a difference in the field of medicine as a dermatologist, I strongly desire to attend a school that embodies the characteristics that align with my values, ethics, and morals. Attending Spelman would allow me to advance in my career path and ultimately, improve treatment in prevention and intervention for the greater good of the community of black and brown people. We are often undervalued and not considered people of beauty as the current societal standards are set. We are the forethought, not an afterthought. To know I would be surrounded by women who represent similar backgrounds is inspiring. Spelman will challenge me academically and provide robust opportunities along my educational journey. I admire the rich and noble history of this institution. I can assure anyone that I will achieve ground-breaking things in my future career and community because I am more than capable!

The most memorable experience I have so far of giving my time to the health field would be from earlier this year in February. 3.) Life is often unpredictable, and sometimes it throws challenges at us that we never imagined having to face. For me, one of the most difficult experiences was the sudden death of a beloved family member. In the wake of this tragedy, my family was left not only emotionally devastated but also grappling with the harsh reality of financial instability. Although, with the help of this scholarship I will be able to conquer this adversity and build for a better future. In conclusion, the sudden death of a family member plunged my family into a state of financial turmoil, presenting us with challenges that seemed insurmountable. However, through perseverance, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to my education, I have refused to let these obstacles define me. This scholarship represents an opportunity to overcome the adversity that has plagued my family and pave a way for a brighter, more prosperous future.
