I am a first generation student and U.S citizen. My parents have instilled in my brain that by furthering your education, especially in a field that deeply interests you, doors will open and you'll have opportunities like no other. I'd love to become a neuroscientist to help make new discoveries and observations about our brain, as well as learning the complexities of dementia and coming up with new treatment plans to aid the progression of the symptoms.

Pandemic's Box Scholarship
Over the course of this pandemic I have spent a lot of time with my family members, mainly my nieces, nephew, and grandparents. I have learned so much about how children and old people tend to be the same: they have very similar hearts and view the world a lot of time in similar ways. My grandma has dementia and my grandfather has Parkinson's disease, and by spending more time with them over this last year and half, I have realized how much these neurological disorders/diseases effect their daily life. Watching them helped solidify my passion for neuroscience. I was on the fence about making it my major for most of my senior year, but being with my grandparents so often kind of inspired me to study neuroscience so I can make a change in the future. I want to help make a change in the lives of other peoples loved ones in the future by studying these diseases and coming up with solutions to help lessen the effects to make their lives easier. Even if I can't helped my grandparents directly with a cure, I would love to help others in the future.
Undergraduate Minorities in STEM Scholarship
I wish to become a neuroscientist and do research in the future. I would love to help discover something, anything at all, because I believe I have the potential and brain strength to get me that far. Plus, it's not the worst thing to shoot for the stars because it definitely keeps me reaching for more. I became fascinated by the brain in my junior year of high school in Anatomy and Physiology. We had an assignment where we had to create a presentation focusing on one disease. I choose to focus on Dementia/Alzheimer's disease, since dementia isn't technically a disease, and just reading a tad bit closer about the complexities of the brain opened my eyes to a new possible goal, learning about and researching the human brain.
I would love to focus in on Dementia or Parkinson's research specifically because 3 out of my 4 grandparents have suffered from one or the other. I have seen them struggle with these diseases/neurological problems and I would love to learn more about the neurological affects and possible ways to make the diseases easier to live with. So many people suffer from both dementia and Alzheimer's every year here in the United States, so even if I won't get to help my grandparents directly, I hope to help thousands of other people and their loved ones.
