Growing up in Mexico was one of the most meaningful and special stages of my life. The support of the people around me, especially my family and teachers, made me a confident and motivated student. Education was my safe place.
However, I never imagined that everything would disappear so quickly. Leaving my country also meant leaving behind my friends, my family, and the future I had planned. The confidence I had built as a strong student was suddenly tested. Nothing I did in 15 years had mattered – it was time to create a new story.
I still remember telling my mother: “I’m afraid I don’t want to go to school,” full of emotions, sadness and more than anything without knowing what would happen on that first day of school. During my first months, language barriers affected my academic performance for the first time. That was only a part of what happened at school, but when I got home, there were still problems.
Supporting my brother during his battle with cancer awakened my passion for healthcare and empathy towards others. This experience created in me a passion about caring for others’ health, especially for making sure they feel supported and understood.
Transferring to a larger school challenged me again, but I set clear goals for myself and committed to becoming my best version. When I saw a photo of the Student of the Month, I promised my mother I would earn that recognition one day. By the end of the year, I had achieved that goal, proving to myself the value of perseverance.
My third year was my best year, I was able to do things that I would never have thought of doing, I gave the best version of myself academically and everything seemed perfect, I felt the progress and I could even have friends without worrying about the language barrier, I had that confidence in myself like when my father told me that I always had to be the best and that’s what I did.
But throughout that year, the hardest blow came at the end when I received the news that I had lost my father and could not say goodbye to him. Just five hours away, but living as an immigrant and with dreams sometimes takes away those privileges.
Although the loss was devastating, I continued pursuing my education in honor of his dreams for me.
This journey of experiences not only taught me to learn a new language or improve my academic skills; it taught me the power of perseverance and dedication to all things.
I want to dedicate my life to nursing – not only to heal or deal with people’s bodies, but also to heal their internal wounds, just as I healed mine. I want to give hope to those who are defeated or lost.
Although I miss everything I lost, I can now say that I found the most important thing: my passion and my future.
The Pay It Forward Scholarship would help me continue my studies and fulfill my dream of becoming a nurse. It would provide me the stability that I need to focus on my education and to prepare for a career in healthcare.
I want to prove that being an immigrant is not an obstacle to achieving my goals, and despite all the barriers I’ve faced, I’ve remained committed to building a better future for myself.
With this scholarship, I will have greater stability, and one day I will be able to serve others with the same perseverance and strength that I have shown throughout my journey.

Since I was a child, I dreamed of going to college and building a successful future for myself. I believed that my life would follow a straight path, and that everything I planned would eventually fall into place. However, one of the biggest lessons I've learned is that life can change unexpectedly from one moment to the next. A simple call can mean life or death or according to that is what we believed about cancer.
Everything changed when my family received the news that my brother had cancer. Because we lived in different countries at the time, my mother decided to emigrate to the United States to support him during his treatment, and I went with her. At first, I thought the move would only be temporary, but with the passage of time, I realized that we were not going to return. I felt angry and lost because the dreams and plans I had for my life suddenly disappeared. I was afraid of entering a new school, learning a new language, adapting to a different culture and starting over completely.
While struggling with those emotions, my family also faced financial and emotional difficulties. My brother spent much of his time in hospitals fighting cancer, while my mother and I sold food to make money because medical bills and daily expenses kept growing. Seeing my family suffer while trying to stay strong changed the way I saw life. I learned that even in painful moments, giving up cannot be an option. Instead of allowing fear and sadness to control me, I learned to keep moving forward and look for solutions, even when everything felt uncertain.
This experience also helped me discover my passion for nursing and health care. Since I was young, I had always been curious about the human body and I had been fascinated by how medical professionals could help people during their most difficult moments. Seeing my brother interact with nurses, doctors and medical staff made me realize the impact that health workers have not only on patients, but also on entire families. His compassion and dedication inspired me deeply.
During my final year of high school, I was selected to participate in a medical assistant program, where I gained both face-to-face and practical experience in health care. Wearing my uniform for the first time and learning practical medical skills made me feel closer to the future I want to achieve. Each experience with patients confirmed that helping others is the career path I really want to follow.
Winning this scholarship would allow me to continue my dream of becoming a nurse while supporting my family throughout this journey. As an immigrant and first-generation university student, I am determined to work hard, overcome obstacles and create a better future. The most important thing is that I hope that my story can represent other immigrants who have felt lost or out of place and remind them that through perseverance, dedication and faith, it is possible to achieve their dreams.

Being involved in my community has taught me to look beyond the surface of people's lives, but also to appreciate that deep desire they possess to achieve. The Book Buddies program at the local library made me realize the skills a child can develop, but also share my own story. This program was about far more than simply clocking in hours and leaving; it was about teaching young children a love for reading. I was able to meet a girl with whom I connected instantly. I sensed her fear of reading aloud, or even just speaking with me as she struggled with the language barrier, which made her feel insecure around the other children. When I approached her, I was able to speak Spanish and generate a circle of trust. Because we shared our own history of immigrating to the US, she felt safe and protected. She no longer looked at me with fear, but rather with eyes full of compassion. With each session, she continued to make strides not only in her reading but also in her command of English, filling me with an ever-growing sense of pride. When I arrived in this country I had to learn everything on my own, but this girl developed remarkable skills in a short time span, teaching me a valuable lesson: no matter how difficult our circumstances may be, or our age, we are always capable of learning something new. Even if that means starting from scratch, or facing down our fears.

WinnerMany people believe that community service is just about completing a few hours and then forgetting about it, but for me, it is something much more meaningful. Community service represents the opportunity to dedicate my time to creating change for people who truly need it. It means caring about what happens around us and understanding that even small actions can make a difference in someone else’s life.Since I was young, when I would go out with my mother, I began to notice how many people lacked basic needs and how there was not always enough help available. Later, when I immigrated at the age of 14, I learned not only the importance of giving help, but also the strength it takes to ask for it. That is why I take every opportunity I can to support others, from children to adults, and remind them that they are not alone. As a high school student who was new to my community, I did not always know how to get involved. However, after joining different organizations at my school, I began to find opportunities to serve. One of the most meaningful experiences I had was volunteering with Book Buddies at the community library, where I worked with children who were beginning to learn how to read. Many of them struggled with concentration or language barriers, and I was able to connect with them because I had experienced similar challenges.I especially remember one girl who at first refused to read because she thought it was boring. However, over time, she began to change. By the end of the program, she was reading multiple books per session and truly enjoying the stories. Seeing her growth reminded me of my own journey and made me realize that I now had the opportunity to help someone else overcome their struggles. In addition to this, I volunteered at Boopalooza, a Halloween event at the community library, where I helped organize games and create a fun and safe environment for families. I also participated in Feed the Future, where I helped distribute food to families in need, and I assisted with Easter Vigil Clean Up at my church, helping prepare spaces for community events. Through all of these experiences, I learned that community service is not just about helping, it is about connecting, understanding, and supporting others in meaningful ways. This journey has not only helped me growacademically, but it has also taught me the power of perseverance and dedication. I want to dedicate my life to nursing, not only to care for people’s physical health, but also to help heal their internal wounds, just as I have healed mine. I want to give hope to those who feel defeated or lost.Although I miss everything I left behind, I can now say that I found the most important thing: my passion and my future. My goal is to become a nurse and continue my education in healthcare. This scholarship will help me achieve that goal by providing the financial stability I need to focus on my studies and prepare for my future career. I want to prove that being an immigrant is not an obstacle to success. Despite all the challenges I have faced, I have remained committed to building a better future for myself. With this scholarship, I will be able to continue my journey and, one day, give back to others with the same strength and perseverance that I have developed through my experiences.
