My educational journey has been anything but traditional, but it has been deeply meaningful and full of growth. I started college right after high school with dreams of pursuing a degree in business. At the time, I thought it was the “safe” path stable, practical, and aligned with what others expected of me. But as I sat through lectures that didn’t inspire me and worked internships that left me feeling unfulfilled, I realized I was building a future that didn’t reflect who I truly was or what I valued most. After two years, I made the difficult decision to pause my education. I needed time to reassess my goals and rediscover my purpose. During that break, I worked a series of jobs, including one as a caregiver at an assisted living facility. That’s where everything changed. My “aha” moment came one quiet afternoon while helping an elderly resident who had recently suffered a stroke. She was scared, confused, and struggling to regain her independence. As I assisted her with simple tasks and offered reassurance, I noticed how a kind touch and genuine care made all the difference. Later that day, a nurse on staff told me, “You have a gift for this.” Something clicked. It was the first time I felt truly seen and truly aligned with a path that felt right and deeply fulfilling. From that moment forward, I knew I wanted to become a nurse. I returned to school with a renewed sense of purpose and changed my major to nursing. It wasn’t an easy transition; I had to retake science prerequisites, juggle work and classes, and push through moments of self-doubt. But the more I learned, the more certain I became. Nursing combines everything I care about: compassion, science, service, and human connection. Today, I am fully immersed in my nursing prerequisites and on track to apply to a BSN program. I’ve volunteered at clinics, shadowed nurses, and continue to work in patient care settings to strengthen my experience and clinical awareness. I am proud of how far I’ve come and deeply grateful for the detours, because they brought me to the career I was always meant for. Just thinking about a nursing career excites me. Receiving this scholarship would support not only my education but the passion that now drives it forward. Nursing isn’t just my goal it’s my calling, and I’m ready to answer it wholeheartedly and without hesitation.
    Dr. Soronnadi Nnaji Legacy Scholarship
As a proud second-generation African, I have always carried the strength, resilience, and values of my Nigerian heritage in everything I do. My parents came to this country with little more than hope and a belief in the power of education. Their sacrifices and determination have shaped my identity, values, and goals & morals instilling in me the importance of hard work, community, teamwork and using my gifts to serve others. Growing up, I was surrounded by a close-knit cultural community where we leaned on one another. Inspired by the spirit of Ubuntu “I am because we are” I became involved in several initiatives focused on giving back. One of the most meaningful projects I led was a STEM tutoring program at my local community center. I recognized that many students, especially immigrants and children of color, were falling behind in math and science due to a lack of access to resources and mentorship. I organized free weekend sessions, recruited volunteers, and helped students boost not only their grades but their confidence. Seeing them thrive reminded me why representation and access matter. I’ve also contributed through volunteering at health fairs, food drives, and voter registration events within African and African American communities. Each initiative was grounded in a desire to empower others with knowledge, resources, and a sense of belonging. My culture taught me to never leave anyone behind and to always uplift others as I climb. That belief continues to guide me. Academically, I’ve always gravitated toward science and technology. My cultural background fostered a deep respect for education, which has motivated me to challenge myself in advanced STEM courses despite obstacles. Being a second-generation student hasn’t always been easy. I’ve had to navigate complex systems without a roadmap, but I’ve done so with pride, determination, and the goal of becoming a biomedical engineer. The Dr. Soronnadi Nnaji Legacy Scholarship would significantly impact my ability to pursue this dream. It would help alleviate financial stress and allow me to focus more deeply on research, internships, and my academic growth. More importantly, it would honor the legacy of a pioneer who paved the way for African scholars like myself to pursue excellence in STEM. With your support, I hope to continue breaking barriers, building bridges, and using my education to improve healthcare technology and access especially in underserved communities that reflect both my roots and my heart. Thank you for your time

My name is DaChannel Washington , and I am a dedicated, compassionate, and determined individual with a heart for service and a passion for helping others. I was raised in a community where resources were limited but kindness was abundant, and those early experiences taught me the value of empathy, resilience, and giving back. From a young age, I knew I wanted to pursue a path that would allow me to uplift others and create lasting, positive change. I am currently pursuing a degree in nursing because I believe healthcare is one of the most powerful tools for change, both individually and collectively. Health is a fundamental human right, and yet, so many people in my community and beyond struggle with access, affordability, and cultural understanding when it comes to receiving quality care. My goal is to become a nurse who not only provides exceptional medical support but also advocates for equity, education, and holistic wellness. I plan to make a positive impact on my community by working in underserved areas where healthcare resources are scarce. I want to serve as a bridge between the medical system and the people it sometimes overlooks—especially the elderly, low-income families, immigrants, and individuals facing mental health challenges. I envision starting outreach programs that provide health education, preventive care, and emotional support. I also hope to mentor young students interested in healthcare careers, especially those who, like me, come from underrepresented backgrounds and need guidance and encouragement to follow their dreams. Beyond clinical work, I believe change begins with compassion in everyday moments—listening to someone’s story, advocating for a patient’s needs, or simply showing up with kindness. I want to lead by example and inspire others to recognize their own power to create change, no matter how small it may seem. This scholarship would be instrumental in helping me complete my education without the added burden of financial stress. It would allow me to focus fully on my studies, clinical experiences, and community engagement while continuing to grow into the nurse, and person I aspire to be. With your support, I will not only earn a degree but use it as a platform to serve, uplift, and transform lives. I believe we all have a purpose, and mine is to heal, to empower, and to make the world a more compassionate and equitable place one patient, one community, and one act of kindness at a time.
Scholar Budget Define Your Dream Scholarship
Becoming a nurse has been a lifelong dream shaped by personal experience, compassion for others, and a deep desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. I have always admired the strength and empathy nurses show in the face of adversity, not only delivering care but offering comfort and hope during life’s most vulnerable moments. For me, nursing is not just a career—it’s a calling. I am determined to turn this dream into a reality through education, hands-on experience, and unwavering dedication. My journey began with caring for a family member during a chronic illness. Watching the nurses not only treat their medical needs but also uplift their spirit inspired me to pursue this path. I saw how a nurse’s presence can ease fear, how their words can bring peace, and how their knowledge can save lives. That experience gave me purpose, direction, and motivation to help others in similar situations. To achieve my goal, I have taken intentional steps both academically and personally. I’ve completed prerequisite courses with strong grades, enrolled in healthcare-related programs, and volunteered in medical settings to gain real-world exposure. These experiences have deepened my understanding of the profession and strengthened my belief that nursing is where I belong. I’ve also developed time management, communication, and critical thinking skills—essential tools for a successful nurse who can adapt in diverse healthcare environments. Financially, however, the road has been challenging. While I work part-time to support my education, the cost of tuition, books, and clinical expenses can be overwhelming. Receiving this scholarship would ease that burden significantly, allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on financial stress. It would provide the support I need to stay on track and continue pursuing my passion without interruption, ultimately allowing me to graduate on time. Looking ahead, I plan to specialize in community and mental health nursing. I want to work in underserved areas, offering care to those who might otherwise fall through the cracks of our healthcare system. My goal is to combine clinical excellence with empathy and advocacy, building trust with patients and delivering care that addresses not just physical needs, but emotional and social challenges as well. With hard work, the right support, and a heart full of purpose, I know I can turn my dream of becoming a nurse into a powerful reality. This scholarship would be a meaningful part of that journey, helping me serve others and change lives—one patient at a time.
    Elijah's Helping Hand Scholarship Award
Mental health has been a central part of my life—not just as a topic of awareness, but as a personal journey that has shaped my identity, relationships, and career goals. My struggle with anxiety and depression began in early adolescence, though I didn’t have the words to explain what I was feeling at the time. I just knew something wasn’t right. I felt constantly overwhelmed, mentally exhausted, and disconnected from the world around me. I wore a smile on the outside, but inside I was battling storms I didn’t know how to calm. For years, I suffered in silence, afraid to ask for help and convinced that doing so would be a sign of weakness. I come from a community where mental health is often misunderstood or overlooked, where the expectation is to be strong, stay quiet, and “push through.” But that silence took a toll on me. It affected my school performance, isolated me from friends, and led to a period where I even questioned my own worth and purpose. It wasn’t until I finally opened up to a trusted teacher that things began to change. With her support, I found a counselor who helped me put words to what I was feeling, develop healthy coping skills, and realize that I wasn’t alone. That moment—choosing to seek help—was one of the hardest and bravest things I’ve ever done. It marked the beginning of my healing, and with time, I began to find stability, confidence, and hope again. This experience deeply influenced my relationships and values. I’ve become someone others can lean on, someone who listens without judgment, and who advocates for mental health awareness in my school and community. I believe that no one should feel ashamed or afraid to seek support, and I’ve made it a personal mission to break the silence and stigma surrounding mental illness. Most importantly, my journey has shaped my career aspirations. I plan to pursue a degree in nursing with a focus on psychiatric and community health. I want to support individuals facing mental health challenges, especially young people who may be struggling in silence like I once was, feeling lost and unheard. Receiving this scholarship would ease the financial burden of college and allow me to continue my path with purpose. Mental health shaped my past, but it’s also driving my future—toward a life of empathy, advocacy, and meaningful care for others.
    Mikey Taylor Memorial Scholarship
My experience with mental health has shaped not only who I am, but also how I view the world, connect with others, and envision my future. Navigating anxiety and depression as a teenager wasn’t easy, but it opened my eyes to the importance of compassion, understanding, and the urgent need for mental health awareness and support in all areas of life—especially in healthcare. For a long time, I struggled in silence, unsure of how to express what I was feeling. The stigma surrounding mental health made it even harder to seek help. But eventually, with the support of a school counselor and a few close friends, I began to understand that asking for help was not a weakness—it was a strength. Therapy taught me coping skills, helped me rediscover my self-worth, and most importantly, reminded me that healing is possible, even in the darkest moments. This personal journey transformed my beliefs. I no longer see mental health as something that defines a person’s ability or potential. Instead, I view it as a vital part of overall well-being—just as important as physical health. I’ve also learned that everyone is fighting battles we may not see, which has made me more empathetic, patient, and intentional in my relationships. I strive to create space where others feel seen, heard, and safe to be themselves, because I know firsthand how powerful that can be when you’re struggling. These experiences have had a profound impact on my career aspirations. I’m pursuing a degree in nursing with a focus on mental health and community care. I want to work in environments where I can advocate for people who are often overlooked or misunderstood, especially those from underserved communities where mental health resources are limited, inaccessible, or heavily stigmatized. I hope to become a psychiatric nurse or work in school-based health programs to support youth navigating similar struggles to my own, especially in areas where conversations around mental health are still difficult to have. This scholarship would allow me to continue my education without the added stress of financial strain, giving me the freedom to focus fully on my studies, clinical training, and community engagement. More importantly, it would bring me one step closer to making a difference in the lives of others. My journey with mental health hasn’t been easy, but it’s given me purpose, resilience, empathy, and a deep desire to help others find healing, hope, and lasting support—just like I did.
    She Rose in Health Equity
Health equity means more than equal access—it means ensuring every person, regardless of background, has the opportunity to achieve their highest level of health. I am pursuing a career in nursing because I believe compassionate, community-rooted care is one of the most powerful tools we have to close the gap in health disparities. My goal is to become a nurse who not only treats illness, but also advocates for structural change and equitable outcomes. Currently, I’m contributing to this goal through volunteer work with a mobile health unit that visits underserved neighborhoods in my city. We provide basic screenings, health education, and resources to individuals who may otherwise lack access to care. Many of the patients we see are uninsured, face language barriers, or live with chronic conditions that have gone unmanaged for years. These experiences have opened my eyes to the deep-rooted inequities within our healthcare system—and they’ve strengthened my commitment to be part of the solution. This scholarship would play a critical role in supporting my educational journey. It would ease the financial burden of nursing school and allow me to continue volunteering and gaining hands-on experience without sacrificing my academic success. More importantly, it would help me reach my long-term goal of becoming a public health nurse focused on community-based care and prevention in high-risk areas. To drive meaningful change in health equity, I plan to take several concrete steps. First, I will continue to work directly with marginalized populations through clinical practice, listening to their needs and building trust. Second, I plan to pursue certification in community health and participate in outreach programs that bring care directly to where it’s needed most—schools, shelters, rural areas, and inner-city neighborhoods. In the future, I also hope to collaborate with local policymakers and health organizations to develop culturally competent education programs and advocate for accessible, affordable services. My dream is to create or join initiatives that empower individuals to take control of their health, especially in communities that have historically been underserved or overlooked. Health equity cannot be achieved overnight, but through compassion, education, and action, I believe we can make lasting change. With the support of this scholarship, I will continue preparing myself to be a nurse who not only provides care—but helps reshape the system to better serve everyone.

If you’ve never been chased by a rogue Roomba at 2 a.m. while holding a plate of nachos and questioning your life choices, then you’ve never truly met adversity. It began on a night like any other—me, proudly procrastinating on a term paper that was due in seven hours, and rewarding myself with a plate of slightly burnt nachos. I was halfway through an emotionally intense documentary about penguins (as one does), when I heard the unmistakable sound of the vacuum turning on in the other room. This would have been perfectly normal, had I not programmed my Roomba to only clean at noon on Sundays. It was Tuesday. At night. The machine had gained sentience. Cautiously, I peeked around the corner. There it was: whirring, blinking, slowly inching forward like a robotic horror villain. I whispered, “Roomba?” as if it might respond. It didn’t. It just turned directly toward me and charged. Naturally, I panicked and ran—because nothing says “future scholarship recipient” like sprinting away from a frisbee-shaped vacuum cleaner in your pajamas while clutching nachos and yelling, “Why are you like this?!” In the chaos, I stubbed my toe, flung cheese onto the wall, and tripped over a laundry basket, all while the Roomba continued its steady pursuit. It didn’t stop until it cornered me by the bathroom and casually bumped my foot like it hadn’t just ruined my snack and my dignity. Turns out, a power surge reset its schedule. My fear of a robot uprising was premature. What does any of this have to do with a scholarship, you ask? Everything. In that ridiculous moment, I learned more than just how to disable an automated cleaning schedule. I learned how I respond under pressure (dramatically), how I adapt to unexpected problems (while limping), and—most importantly—how to laugh at myself when things go wildly off course. Life is unpredictable. Whether it’s a midnight robot rebellion or a tough exam, things won’t always go as planned. But I’ve learned to find humor in the chaos, and resilience in the ridiculous. I may not have conquered the Roomba that night, but I did finish the term paper—cheeseless, bruised, and very caffeinated. And that, I believe, is the true spirit of perseverance—with a side of nachos.

I have always been drawn to helping people in meaningful and lasting ways. That’s what first inspired my interest in nursing. I want to pursue a degree in nursing because it is a career that combines science, compassion, and service. Nurses are not only caregivers but also advocates, educators, and leaders. They are often the first to comfort patients, the last to leave their side, and the bridge between complex medical care and the human experience. I am inspired by the strength, empathy, and dedication nurses show, and I hope to bring those same qualities to my own career. Throughout my life, I’ve sought out opportunities to care for others. Whether volunteering at local health fairs, assisting with community food drives, or helping family members during illness, I’ve always found joy and purpose in helping people. When I began shadowing nurses during a high school internship program, I saw just how powerful their role is—not only in treating patients but also in supporting families and strengthening communities. That experience confirmed my passion and showed me that nursing is the path I want to follow. As a nurse, I hope to contribute to my community in multiple ways. First and foremost, I want to provide excellent, compassionate care to patients from all walks of life. I plan to specialize in community health or pediatric nursing so I can work directly with vulnerable populations, including children and families who may not have consistent access to healthcare. I believe that preventive education is just as important as treatment, and I want to be a source of information, guidance, and support for those in need. I want to create a lasting difference in people’s lives through both healing and education. Beyond clinical care, I want to advocate for health equity and promote wellness in underserved neighborhoods. I hope to participate in outreach programs, school health initiatives, and mobile clinics to make care more accessible. By building trust and forming strong relationships with those I serve, I believe I can help improve long-term health outcomes in my community, one step at a time. Earning a nursing degree will give me the skills and knowledge to make a real difference. With this scholarship, I can focus fully on my education and take the next step toward a life of meaningful service. I am ready and eager to become the kind of nurse who not only heals, but uplifts every community I serve.

Serving my community is deeply important to me because it represents the values I strive to live by: compassion, responsibility, and unity. I believe that strong communities are built on the actions of individuals who are willing to give their time, energy, and hearts to support those around them. For me, community service is not just an occasional task—it’s a lifelong commitment to making the world around me better. Growing up, I witnessed the power of service firsthand. My parents regularly volunteered at local food banks and participated in neighborhood clean-ups, setting an example that taught me the importance of helping others. I learned that even small acts—like tutoring a classmate, delivering groceries to an elderly neighbor, or participating in a charity walk—can have a big impact. These experiences shaped my belief that we all have a role to play in creating a more supportive and caring society. One of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had was volunteering at a local shelter, where I helped distribute meals and talked with people who were experiencing homelessness. It was eye-opening to realize how many people live without basic necessities and how meaningful it can be just to listen to someone’s story. That experience reminded me that service isn’t just about giving material support—it’s also about showing others that they matter and that they are not alone in their struggles. Serving my community has also helped me grow as a person. It’s taught me patience, leadership, and the importance of empathy. I’ve learned to work with people from all backgrounds and walks of life, which has strengthened my communication skills and broadened my perspective. These lessons have not only made me a more effective volunteer but also a more compassionate friend, student, and future professional. Ultimately, serving my community gives me a sense of purpose. It allows me to contribute to something greater than myself and to be part of a collective effort to uplift and empower others. Whether I’m helping organize a fundraiser, mentoring younger students, or simply lending a hand where it’s needed, I know my efforts are helping to build a stronger, kinder community that reflects our shared humanity and values. This scholarship would support my education as I continue to seek out meaningful ways to serve. I am committed to giving back and making a lasting positive difference—because I believe our communities are only as strong as the people who care enough to serve them.
