Being a single mother of four while pursuing a college degree has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life, but it has also been the most rewarding. Every day, I strive to provide a stable and loving home for my children while working full-time as a teacher at BVCAP Early Head Start and pursuing my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Arizona Global Campus. Although the responsibilities can feel overwhelming, they have strengthened my resilience, determination, and commitment to creating a better future for my family. Balancing work, school, and motherhood requires constant sacrifice. My days begin before sunrise as I prepare my children for school and get ready for work. Throughout the day, I dedicate myself to teaching and nurturing young children, knowing that the care and guidance I provide can have a lasting impact on their lives. After work, my focus shifts back to my own family. I help my children with homework, prepare dinner, attend school events, and make sure they know they are loved and supported. Once they are asleep, I begin my own schoolwork, often staying up late to complete assignments and study for exams. There are many nights when I sacrifice sleep because I refuse to sacrifice my dreams. Financially, being the sole provider for four children presents its own challenges. Every dollar must be carefully budgeted to ensure my children have what they need while also covering educational expenses. There have been times when I questioned whether I could continue, but I remind myself that earning my degree is an investment in our future. I want my children to see that perseverance, hard work, and education can open doors that once seemed impossible. One of the greatest hardships I have overcome was surviving an abusive relationship from 2015 to 2019. Before that experience, I had never witnessed domestic violence in my home, and I never imagined I would find myself in that situation. Escaping that relationship required courage, faith, and the support of those who believed in me. It was a painful chapter of my life, but it also became the foundation of my purpose. Instead of allowing my past to define me, I chose to let it inspire me. My experiences have fueled my passion for helping others, especially African American women and children who are facing domestic violence, trauma, or substance abuse. I know what it feels like to feel trapped, unheard, and uncertain about the future. Because of that, I have chosen to pursue a career in social work, where I can advocate for families, connect them with resources, and remind them that healing is possible. My goal is to be the person I once needed—someone who listens without judgment, offers hope, and helps others rebuild their lives. Despite the obstacles I face, I refuse to let them stand in the way of my dreams. Every challenge has made me stronger and has reinforced my belief that my purpose is to serve others. My children are my greatest motivation, and everything I do is to create a better future for them while making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Receiving this scholarship would not only relieve some of the financial burden of pursuing my education but would also bring me one step closer to achieving my dream of becoming a social worker. I am determined to use my education, my experiences, and my compassion to advocate for vulnerable children and women, empower families, and create lasting change in my community. I believe that my resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to helping others make me a deserving candidate for this opportunity.

Being a single mother of four while pursuing a college degree is one of the most challenging yet rewarding journeys of my life. Every day, I balance the responsibilities of raising my children, working full-time as a teacher at BVCAP Early Head Start, and completing coursework toward my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Arizona Global Campus. Although the road has not been easy, every challenge has strengthened my determination to create a better future for my family and the families I hope to serve. One of my biggest hardships is managing my time. My days begin early as I prepare my children for school before heading to work, where I spend my day teaching and caring for young children. After work, my responsibilities continue with helping my own children with homework, preparing meals, attending school activities, and making sure they have everything they need. Once they are settled for the night, I dedicate my evenings to studying, completing assignments, and preparing for the next day. There are many nights when I sacrifice sleep to meet deadlines because I know my education is an investment in my family’s future. Financial challenges are another obstacle I face. Supporting a household of five on a single income while paying for school requires careful planning and many sacrifices. There are times when I have had to choose between personal needs and educational expenses, but I have never allowed financial hardship to stop me from pursuing my goals. Instead, it has motivated me to work harder and seek opportunities like this scholarship so I can continue my education without placing additional financial strain on my family. In addition to balancing work, parenting, and school, I have also overcome personal hardships that shaped the person I am today. From 2015 to 2019, I experienced domestic violence in a relationship. Before then, I had never witnessed abuse in my home, and I never imagined I would experience it myself. Leaving that relationship required courage, faith, and resilience. While those years were painful, they also gave me a deeper understanding of the challenges many women face and inspired me to dedicate my life to helping others find hope and healing. Those experiences are the reason I chose to pursue a degree in Psychology. My goal is to become a social worker who advocates for children and African American women affected by domestic violence and substance abuse. I want to provide the same compassion, encouragement, and resources that can help someone rebuild their life. I understand that healing takes time, and I want to be a source of support for those who may feel alone or without options. Despite the obstacles I have faced, I remain committed to my education because I know it will allow me to make a meaningful difference in my community. I want my children to see that perseverance, faith, and hard work can overcome even the most difficult circumstances. I also want them to understand that our past does not define our future. Receiving this scholarship would ease the financial burden of earning my degree and allow me to focus more fully on my education and my family. More importantly, it would bring me one step closer to fulfilling my purpose of serving children and women who need someone to believe in them. My journey has taught me resilience, compassion, and determination, and I am committed to using those qualities to make a lasting impact in the lives of others.
    Linda Hicks Memorial Scholarship
My educational goals and passion for supporting African American women impacted by domestic violence and substance abuse are deeply rooted in my own life experiences. From 2015 to 2019, I was in an abusive relationship that changed my life. Before then, I had never witnessed domestic violence in my home or experienced it firsthand. I found myself in a relationship with someone who was controlling, emotionally abusive, and physically abusive. It was one of the most difficult periods of my life, but it also became the foundation of my purpose. Overcoming that experience taught me the importance of strength, resilience, and having access to support. I know what it feels like to believe there is no way out, and I understand how life-changing it can be when someone offers compassion, guidance, and hope. Those experiences inspired me to pursue a degree in Psychology at the University of Arizona Global Campus with the goal of becoming a social worker. My passion is to support children and women, especially African American women, who are experiencing domestic violence or substance abuse. I want to be someone who listens without judgment, provides resources, and helps individuals rebuild their lives. I believe that no woman or child should have to face these challenges alone. If I can use my own journey to encourage even one person to find safety, healing, and hope, then I know I am fulfilling my purpose. My experiences have shaped not only my educational goals but also the person I strive to be every day. They have given me empathy, determination, and a commitment to serving others. Through social work, I hope to create a lasting impact by empowering women and protecting children so they can build healthier, brighter futures.
