Dr. Tien Vo Healthcare Hope Scholarship
Pursuing a career in nursing is not only a professional aspiration for me—it is a calling that has been shaped by a life filled with challenges, deep purpose, and unwavering compassion for others. As a single mother, student, and woman who has experienced both financial hardship and emotional adversity, I have learned to carry both the weight and the gift of resilience. Each obstacle I have faced has not only clarified my “why” for entering healthcare, but also deepened my determination to make a difference.
My journey into healthcare began not in a classroom, but in the caregiving I provided for my own family. After my grandmother passed away last year, I reflected deeply on the ways healthcare systems can both support and fail our loved ones. She struggled to accept care toward the end of her life, partly because of the mistrust she felt toward providers. That experience stayed with me. It made me realize that the healing relationship between patient and caregiver is not just clinical—it’s emotional, human, and built on trust. I want to be a nurse who restores that trust, especially in communities where it has been eroded.
Alongside this emotional journey has been the daily reality of financial struggle. After losing my job and going on temporary disability, I was forced to carry the full burden of rent and household expenses alone. I am raising my daughter while attending school full time and taking accelerated science prerequisites to begin Northeastern University's ABSN program this fall. Despite my commitment, securing private loans has proven almost impossible without a co-signer, and federal aid is limited because I hold a prior degree. Every step toward this goal has been hard-won, but I am still showing up. I have taken on weekend babysitting, offered photography services, and applied for every opportunity I can find to fill the gaps. My path hasn’t been smooth, but it has been marked by persistence.
What I bring to the nursing profession is more than academic ambition—I bring lived experience, empathy, and a fierce commitment to equity. I understand the importance of representation in healthcare. As a Black woman and mother, I have seen firsthand the disparities in treatment and access that impact people like me. I plan to be the kind of nurse who listens, who advocates, and who meets people where they are. I want to work in maternal health or community-based care where I can help rebuild trust and improve outcomes for families like my own.
This scholarship would provide more than financial relief. It would offer validation of the sacrifices I’ve made, the challenges I’ve endured, and the future I’m fighting for. I don’t take lightly what it means to be supported by someone who believes in my potential. I am ready to give back. I am ready to serve. And I am ready to prove that with the right tools and support, someone like me can change lives—starting with my own.
