My name is Cynthia Meza, and I am currently enrolled in Trade Tech Los Angeles for my AA in community and economic development. I am currently participating in my second year of service through Americorps, in which I am placed at a middle school where I am helping the dean and counseling team to create and establish social and emotional learning in their school environment. I am creating lessons for both staff and students.
I believe in giving educators the proper tools to understand social-emotional learning and why it's essential. But most importantly, how it could benefit themselves and their students. If teachers know how to handle their social-emotional development, they can learn better practice and model it for their students. Which would help students grasp the idea and concept of social-emotional learning. Currently, our schools have a strained relationship between staff and students. I believe I can help try to mend that relationship by having students and teachers establish social-emotional development and their school and everyday life, which would allow them both in and out of the classroom.
Unfortunately, in today's time, many students, especially in Intercity areas, experience a lot of ACEs at a young age. Since the study that Kaiser Permanente conducted about Aces, there has been a lot of connection between physical sickness in older adults and have been exposed to Aces when they were children but never getting treatment for those which, in return as adults, ended up calling them, to be physically sick we are now noticing that mental health plays a much much more significant role than ever given credit for in an individual's health and well-being.
So while introducing social-emotional learning to Educators, I am also informing them about ACEs and the harm it causes students who do not get care to heal from them. I'm also introducing examples of what different kinds of Aces there are. Since everybody most likely has experienced at least one, the specific individuals that unfortunately experience more than four in their lifetime before the age of 18 usually have lifetime effects.
I have experienced more than four aces in my life growing up before the age of 18. I am now about to be 30 years old, and for the last two years have been learning about social-emotional learning and Aces and the cause they have on individuals, which in return sparked a passion for me wanting to help the younger generation work currently going through similar Aces.
I've also started a non-profit that is geared toward educating educators about social-emotional learning and Aces that their students suffer from every day. As educators, we should Inspire and lift our students, not individuals, to realize our students just because we don't understand why they do what they do. An educator taking the time to get to know and genuinely help students could make all the difference in their life. They might not have anybody else trying to do that for them, so an educator being that one individual, can have a tremendous impact on their life in a positive way.y I'm working on getting my non-profit Nationwide into schools so we can help address this issue.
That's why I decided to go to school. I never thought I would want to go to college never thought about it. But since being introduced to social-emotional learning and Aces, I have realized I wanted to go to school so I can become educated on the subject so can help others.
