Growing up in a small, tight-knit community, I was taught the values of service, connection, and support from an early age. These values have not only shaped my character but have also guided my career goals. My dream to become a firefighter—and, more recently, a paramedic—was born from my experiences in this community, where I learned that helping others during their most vulnerable moments is one of the most fulfilling paths a person can take. At 16, I joined the Riddle Volunteer Fire Department, and it was there that my passion for emergency services truly blossomed. Responding to fires, accidents, and medical emergencies gave me an outlet to help people when they were in need, but it was the impact of providing care and comfort that drew me in the most. Working alongside paramedics and firefighters, I realized I wanted to expand my role by not only fighting fires but also providing advanced medical care. This sparked a new goal: to become a paramedic. I now see my future in emergency services as a firefighter-paramedic, where I can make an even greater difference by offering both fire and medical response. The fire department also introduced me to a second family—my fellow firefighters—who encouraged me and helped me grow. Their support has been invaluable as I continue to pursue my goals. Through them, I learned that success in this field depends not only on skill but also on compassion, teamwork, and a commitment to learning. As I continue my education in the Fire Science program at Umpqua Community College, I am gaining the knowledge and training I need to succeed in this field, knowing that both firefighting and paramedicine require constant growth. Beyond the fire department, my mother has been a major influence in my life. She has always been deeply involved in our community, setting an example of what it means to give back. Her dedication to service inspired me to be active in local volunteer efforts and community events. Whether it's assisting with fundraisers, helping neighbors, or volunteering at local events, my involvement in the community has shaped me into a person who is oriented toward service. These experiences have reinforced my commitment to a career where I can continue to give back and support others. Today, my goal is to combine my passion for firefighting with my desire to provide medical care by becoming a paramedic firefighter. By pursuing this dual career, I can offer comprehensive assistance to people in crisis, whether it’s responding to a fire, an accident, or a medical emergency. I am excited to continue my education, work alongside skilled professionals, and eventually become a leader in my field. In conclusion, my community has profoundly shaped my aspirations. Through the fire department, my mother’s example, and my commitment to service, I have developed a passion for helping others that will guide me throughout my career. I am excited to continue my journey as I work toward becoming a paramedic firefighter and serving my community in meaningful ways.
Learner Mental Health Empowerment for Health Students Scholarship
Mental health is a crucial aspect of well-being that impacts everyone, including students like me. As a high school student and a first responder, I've learned firsthand how important it is to take care of our mental health. This is especially true when balancing the demands of school and the pressures of my role as a firefighter.
Being a first responder is a challenging and sometimes stressful job. We often deal with emergencies that can be emotionally taxing, and this experience has shown me how vital mental health is in managing stress and maintaining overall well-being. For me, mental health is not just about avoiding problems but also about actively working to stay healthy, balanced, and resilient.
In my school and community, I advocate for mental health by using my experiences to raise awareness and support others. Here’s how I do it:
Leading by Example: I believe that one of the most powerful ways to advocate for mental health is by taking care of my own. By managing my stress through healthy habits like exercise, sleep, and talking about my feelings, I set an example for my peers. When they see me handling my responsibilities and staying positive, it encourages them to take their own mental health seriously.
Sharing My Story: I use my experiences as a firefighter to discuss mental health openly. When appropriate, I share how dealing with stressful situations has impacted me and how I manage those challenges. This can help others understand that it's okay to seek help and that everyone faces difficulties.
Creating Supportive Spaces: In my school, I work to create a supportive environment by participating in or organizing events that focus on mental health awareness. This might include mental health workshops, guest speakers, or simple peer-to-peer support groups. These initiatives help reduce stigma and encourage students to talk about their mental health.
Encouraging Open Conversations: I make it a point to talk openly about mental health with my friends and family. By starting these conversations, I help normalize discussions around mental health issues, making it easier for others to seek help when they need it. Sometimes, just knowing someone is willing to listen can make a big difference.
Promoting Resources: I also share information about mental health resources available at school or in the community. Whether it’s counseling services, hotlines, or self-help materials, I believe that knowing where to turn for support is a crucial part of managing mental health.
Volunteering for Mental Health Initiatives: Whenever there’s a chance to volunteer for mental health awareness campaigns or related activities, I get involved. This not only helps raise awareness but also shows my commitment to the cause.
Mental health is as important as physical health, and taking care of it should be a priority for everyone. As a student and a first responder, I understand the unique pressures that come with these roles and how essential it is to support mental health in all aspects of life. By advocating for mental health in my community, I hope to contribute to a more understanding, supportive environment where everyone feels empowered to take care of their mental well-being.
