Bio

I have always been passionate about the ocean, computers, and playing the violin. I am enrolled in a rigorous course load, including AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP English Language, and many others. I am particularly interested in sciences, specifically those of genetics and medicine. Outside of the classroom, I am actively involved in many service clubs and honor societies, as well as academic bowls. I held leadership positions as the JV captain of the academic bowl and as a head guard at my lifeguard job. My hard work and dedication have resulted in several notable achievements, including an AP Scholar and the African American Recognition Award. Looking towards the future, I plan to pursue a degree in biochemistry at the University of Michigan in the fall of 2024. I am excited to continue learning about and exploring opportunities in healthcare. I then plan to graduate and go to medical school to be a dermatologist. I am excited to continue exploring genetics and other biosciences, as well as the ocean and the violin, and hope to make a positive impact on healthcare and people's lives.

Having a family member in the sea service has profoundly shaped my personal and academic aspirations. My father's career in the Navy has instilled in me a deep appreciation for service, discipline, and the importance of leadership. Growing up in a household where duty and honor were paramount values has greatly influenced my worldview and shaped my ambitions. One of the most significant values I have learned from having a family member in the military is the importance of service to others. The selflessness and sacrifice demonstrated by military members have motivated me to seek opportunities where I can make a positive impact on the lives of others. Whether through volunteering, community service, or eventually pursuing a career in medicine, I am committed to upholding the values of duty and service that have been ingrained in me. The discipline and hard work of the military led to me having similar values, in that I strive for near perfection and success academically and otherwise. Leadership is another essential value that I have learned from my various family members', including my father's service in the Navy. Effective leadership is critical in any organization, but it is especially vital in the military, where lives may depend on the decisions of those in command. Witnessing my father's leadership abilities and his ability to inspire and motivate others has taught me the importance of leading by example and earning the respect of those around you. Pursuing my academic and professional goals, I plan to incorporate these leadership principles into my endeavors, striving to lead with integrity, empathy, and a commitment to excellence. In the future, I aspire to follow in my father's footsteps by pursuing a career that allows me to serve others and make a positive impact on society.         Specifically, I would pursue dermatology. In college, I plan on majoring in biochemistry or something similar, using the major as my pathway of premed as the courses are mostly the same. Ever since I was young, I have always wanted to be a doctor. Originally, I was just interested in regular family medicine, but for the longest time, I wanted to be an anesthesiologist. Now, after college, I plan to pursue a medical career and become a dermatologist. I plan to go to medical school straight after college and then, of course, do residency after that. Once I am a full-fledged dermatologist, I plan on working in a city where dermatologists are in high demand, then eventually moving somewhere more rural or suburban and opening up my own dermatology clinic.         Dermatology is the study of the skin, so a dermatologist analyzes and figures out what's wrong with one's skin. Whether it is determining the cause of acne or removing warts and lipomas, dermatologists do it all. Dermatology allows you to seriously impact people's personal lives through mental and physical health. To conclude, my father's service and values have helped me achieve academic success and have goals to help others in medicine.
    Headbang For Science
Ironically, as someone who plays the violin, I listen to more metal than classical. My introduction to heavy metal came from trap metal. This subgenre, blending elements of hip-hop and aggressive metal, captured my attention with its raw energy and attitude. I discovered it when one of my friends was playing it at the skate park. Since then, artists like Scarlxrd, City Morgue, and Ghostemane have led me down a rabbit hole into the broader world of heavy metal, where I have discovered a diverse landscape of sound and expression. Exploring heavy metal opened my eyes to a plethora of obscure artists who resonate with me on a deeper level. Doom metal bands like Pallbearer, with their haunting melodies and introspective lyrics, offer solace in moments of introspection. Others, like Power Trip, ignite a fire within me with their relentless energy and uncompromising spirit. Heavy metal music holds a special place in my heart because I and all my friends love it, and it is also a form of relief from academic and personal pursuits.            In regard to this scholarship, receiving this award would be instrumental in helping me reach my potential in pursuing a career in dermatology.  In college, I plan on majoring in biochemistry or something similar, using the major as my pathway of study as the courses are mostly the same. Ever since I was young, I have always wanted to be a doctor. Now, after college, I plan to pursue a medical career and become a dermatologist. Dermatology allows you to seriously impact people's personal lives through their mental and physical health. Like all of medical school, there's competition, but some specialties like anesthesiology are very competitive, and I would like to distance myself from that kind of environment. Dermatologists also make a great salary and are in high demand, making it an economically viable and stable career choice. In short, I find dermatology to be a very interesting study that is less competitive than others while still being in high demand, making it an optimal choice for me. I would also be the first doctor in my family and one of the few in the African American community. Becoming a dermatologist would allow me to be a role model and inspiration for people in my family and others in the African American community.                  This headbang for science scholarship would help me reach this potential by financing the ever-increasing cost of attending college, let alone the University of Michigan. With my mother being disabled and having a lot of medical bills, scholarships are all I have to cover what's left over after the out-of-state financial package. This award would alleviate financial burdens, allowing me to fully immerse myself in my studies and extracurricular activities. With reduced financial stress, I can dedicate more time and energy to excel academically, participate in research opportunities, and engage in volunteer work—activities essential for a competitive medical school application. I am also inspired to knock down boundaries and pave the road for future generations. This award not only supports my personal and professional goals but also helps to increase diversity and inclusion in medicine. To conclude, this award would empower me to pursue my passion for dermatology and realize my dream of becoming a dermatologist. By alleviating financial constraints and providing opportunities for academic and professional growth, it will enable me to reach my full potential and make a positive impact on the lives of others. With this scholarship, hopefully, I'll be able to explore the Detroit metal scene while attending the University of Michigan.

Alternatively, I have always been passionate about genetic modification and GMOs. Genetic modification is an incredibly important subject and I do believe it's my responsibility to help better the understanding of them. I truly believe that genetic modification and genetic research are the future of the world and can solve many problems such as hunger, invasive species, and parasites, as well as counteract the effects of climate change. I have had this belief for a long time and during this have made many presentations and spread my values often at local science fairs and whenever I get to present. Currently, I believe that the medical path is best for me, as I have met with many doctors and have seen their perspectives. I plan on majoring in biochemistry, using it as pre-medicine and to help prepare for medical school. I plan on pursuing a medical career in dermatology; however, if I were to ever change my mind on careers, going to graduate school and then becoming a genetic engineer would be it. Studying biochemistry provides knowledge in both fields while also providing a useful degree in case neither works out.
