For me, the decision to pursue a degree in nursing stems from a calling to be of service for others. I believe that every person has their own gift, a quality someone has that comes effortlessly. Being selfless and being of service to others is a quality of mine that I did not learn in a classroom but comes naturally. In order to fulfill my life, I am meant to give this gift away to individuals that are ill, vulnerable and seeking someone to listen and advocate for their health.
At age twelve, I was introduced to the hard reality of sickness and death. My favorite softball coach was diagnosed with cancer. Despite treatments, he succumbed to his terminal illness. During those years I realized my gift of compassion and decided I would dedicate this gift to the medical field. My hope is to help people like my coach and their families during such crises. As I have walked the path toward my goal, especially working directly with ill people, I realize as a nurse, I can not only have a direct impact on improving physical health, but I am also in a position to directly affect the emotional health of patients and their families. These experiences have solidified my resolve to focus my education and work in pursuit of a career where I can use my gifts to serve humanity.
My current employment as a laboratory phlebotomist at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (MSLC) has solidified my intentions to continue my journey towards becoming a registered nurse. I see first-hand the communication and collaboration between the entire healthcare team in a hospital setting. Being a part of a team and working cohesively with amazing and dedicated professionals toward the goal of helping people in need continues to inspire me to reach for the nursing profession.
In my current position as a phlebotomist, I am inspired by the meaningful connections that nurses develop with patients and their families. These connections truly enhance the quality of care patients receive. These experiences have shown me that providing excellent care, both physically and emotionally, is not only impactful but deeply fulfilling. As I pursue a career as a registered nurse, I hope to continue building these meaningful relationships while also advocating for innovative solutions that empower healthcare professionals, much like Maureen did. I aim to raise hospital standards by embracing new technologies and promoting compassionate, patient-centered care. In my community, I want to be a source of support and advocacy by volunteering, listening, and sharing stories that bring comfort and connection. By carrying forward Maureen’s values of compassion, service, and dedication to excellence, I hope to inspire positive change and uplift both patients and caregivers alike.
