Faith, Advocacy, and a Purpose Bigger Than Me My experience with mental health has influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations because I have learned that what a person carries on the inside is not always visible from the outside. Mental health affects individuals, families, relationships, decision-making, addiction, and entire communities. Over the years, I have found myself advocating for people who needed someone willing to listen, ask questions, find answers, and sometimes refuse to accept “no” when I knew there had to be another option. Long before I decided to make social work my profession, advocacy was already part of who I was. My faith is at the center of that. I was born and raised in church, so faith was introduced to me early. However, being raised in church and developing my own personal relationship with God are two different things. As an adult, my faith has become something I depend on every day. I talk to God throughout my day. I believe in walking by faith and not by sight, especially when I cannot see exactly how something is going to work out. I have also learned that faith does not mean presenting God with a plan I have already created and simply asking Him to approve it. I bring Him my desires and ask Him to order my steps and design the plan that is meant specifically for me. Sometimes that means waiting. Sometimes it means changing direction. Sometimes it means continuing when circumstances would give me every reason to quit. I am still a work in progress. I make mistakes, learn, and grow. My faith does not make me perfect, nor does it make me believe I am better than anyone else. In fact, it has taught me the opposite. I believe we are all God’s children, and that belief affects how I view people from different backgrounds, circumstances, and walks of life. I do not believe compassion should depend on a person’s denomination, history, income, mistakes, or whether their life looks like mine. As a mother of sons, I think deeply about the mental and emotional well-being of boys and men. Too often, boys receive messages that being strong means being silent. Men may carry depression, grief, trauma, fear, anger, or anxiety without having the language or a safe environment to say, “I need help.” By the time someone notices the problem, that pain may have affected relationships, parenting, employment, substance use, or other areas of life. I want to be part of changing that. My understanding of mental health has also been shaped through direct service. During my volunteer clinical experience at a recovery center, I worked with people affected by substance use. I participated in one-on-one counseling, intakes, groups, referrals, drug testing, and other support services. That experience showed me that addiction cannot always be separated neatly from mental health, trauma, family circumstances, or the environment a person comes from. People are complicated. Their stories are complicated. Effective support requires listening to the whole person instead of reducing someone to a diagnosis, addiction, mistake, or difficult period in their life. That experience strengthened something I already believed: people need professionals who will listen before judging them. Returning to college helped me recognize that many of the skills I had developed naturally—advocating, researching, questioning systems, locating resources, communicating with people, and refusing to give up when someone needs help—belong in the profession I am pursuing. My education is giving academic and professional structure to something I have been doing in my community for years. My path has not been traditional or perfectly straight, but I no longer see that as a disadvantage. I see the experiences that brought me here as preparation. I am currently pursuing my bachelor’s degree at the University of La Verne, and my plan is to continue into a Master of Social Work program. My ultimate goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I want to work in mental health, particularly with adolescents, families, and underserved communities. Eventually, I would like to develop or operate an outpatient clinical program where people can receive quality behavioral-health services while also being treated with dignity. I am especially drawn to adolescents because early intervention matters. A young person who learns how to identify emotions, communicate what is happening, process difficult experiences, and ask for help has tools that can follow them into adulthood. I also understand that helping a young person often means understanding the family and community surrounding that child. Mental health does not exist in isolation. My faith will continue to influence how I approach this work, but not by imposing my beliefs on the people I serve. To me, faith requires humility, compassion, patience, accountability, and service. A person should never have to share my religious beliefs to receive my respect or my best effort. My responsibility as a future clinician will be to meet people where they are, honor their dignity, understand their individual beliefs and experiences, and provide ethical and competent care. Mental health has also changed the way I approach relationships. I try to listen more carefully and recognize what may be underneath someone’s behavior. I remind myself that I may not know everything another person is carrying. I have learned that compassion and accountability can exist together. My faith has taught me that serving someone does not require me to judge whether that person deserves to be served. When I look at my life now, returning to school does not feel like starting over. It feels like things are finally connecting. My experiences as a mother, advocate, student, community member, and woman of faith are coming together around a career that allows me to serve others professionally. I do not know every detail of where this path will take me, and I am comfortable saying that. I know the desire God placed in me: to advocate, serve, help people find their voice, and make sure people who are often overlooked know that somebody sees them. I will continue doing my part—earning my degrees, developing my clinical skills, learning from the communities I serve, and becoming the strongest social worker I can be. Then I will continue doing what my faith has taught me to do: walk by faith, keep moving forward, and trust God to order the rest of my steps.

Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan So, my goal is bigger than earning a degree. I have a clear plan for turning my education, lived experience, and years of advocacy into a career that creates lasting change in many communities. I am currently pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Sociology/Behavioral Social Science at the University of La Verne. After completing my undergraduate degree, my next step is to enter an MSW program and continue toward becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Ultimately, I want to establish a community-based outpatient mental health program serving underserved youth and families. I want to create a place where people receive quality mental health care while also having access to advocacy, resources, education, and support. My first priority is successfully completing my bachelor’s degree while building the academic foundation I will need for graduate school. My coursework is strengthening my understanding of human behavior, social systems, inequality, trauma, criminal justice, and the barriers that affect individuals and communities. I am also building relationships with professors and mentors and preparing early for the graduate-school application process. Financing my education is another major part of my plan. For the 2026–2027 academic year, my university estimates my total cost of attendance at $55,886. My current grants and scholarships total $5,892, leaving a significant funding gap. Rather than allowing that number to discourage me, I have approached financing my education with the same determination I bring to everything else. Scholarships have become an important part of my strategy. I consistently research opportunities, organize deadlines, complete applications, and pursue funding that fits my academic goals, community involvement, background, and future profession. Every scholarship I earn reduces my financial burden and allows me to preserve resources for graduate school. I will continue pursuing institutional scholarships, private scholarships, grants, and other educational assistance before relying heavily on student loans. I also understand that a good plan must account for obstacles. Life does not always follow the timeline we create. I have experienced enough unexpected turns to understand the importance of having more than one path forward. If one funding opportunity does not work, I pursue another. If one graduate program is financially unrealistic, I will compare accredited programs and financial-aid packages until I find an option that supports both my professional and financial goals. The final phase of my plan is turning my education into service. Advocacy did not begin for me in college. For years, I have naturally been the person who asks questions, searches for resources, challenges systems, and helps others find their voice. College is giving that passion professional knowledge, structure, and credentials. My roadmap is clear: complete my bachelor’s degree, earn my MSW, obtain clinical licensure, gain professional experience, and eventually build a program that serves my community. Walking with faith, I am not waiting for graduation to start planning my future. I am planning my work now, and every class, scholarship application, connection, and opportunity is another step toward working that plan.

When people hear my story, they often focus on the hardships. While those experiences shaped me, they do not define me. The people who stepped in to raise me are the reason I became the woman I am today. My father, who was originally from Lagos, Nigeria, was killed when I was very young. Overnight, my mother became a single parent responsible for raising me while working two jobs. She worked at Security Pacific Bank, which later became Bank of America, and also worked at Montgomery Ward. She did everything she could to keep us afloat, but no one can do it alone. Fortunately, I was surrounded by family who believed raising a child was a shared responsibility. My grandmother became one of the strongest influences in my life. She opened her home, provided stability, and taught me values that continue to guide me today. My aunt and uncle also helped raise me. My uncle, who recently passed away after battling cancer, was more than an uncle to me. He became one of the father figures I was missing. Together, they showed me what unconditional love, sacrifice, and perseverance looked like. Growing up, life was not easy. I remember taking buses and trains across Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Compton because my family did whatever was necessary to make sure I was cared for. Money was often tight, but my grandmother never allowed our circumstances to determine our character. I was taught to respect others, work hard, value education, and always help people who were struggling. Those lessons stayed with me throughout my life. Even after surviving childhood trauma, losing my father, and later experiencing a career-ending car accident that left me permanently disabled, I never stopped believing that my life still had purpose. Rather than allowing adversity to define me, I returned to school to pursue a degree in Sociology and Behavioral Social Science at the University of La Verne. My long-term goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and establish a community-based mental health program that serves underserved youth, families, and individuals recovering from trauma. Every challenge I have experienced has strengthened my desire to advocate for people who often feel unseen or unheard. The love and sacrifices of my grandmother, my mother, and my extended family taught me resilience long before I understood the meaning of the word. They built a foundation that allowed me to dream beyond my circumstances and believe that education could change not only my future, but the futures of others. Receiving this scholarship would honor the people who invested so much in me. Their compassion became my purpose, and I intend to spend my career paying that gift forward by helping families heal, empowering young people, and proving that where you begin does not determine where you are capable of going.

My father was a Nigerian immigrant with tremendous potential and ambition. Tragically, his life was cut short when he was killed at only thirty-one years old. As his only child, his loss left a lasting impact on my life. After his death, my mother became a single parent and worked multiple jobs to support our family. I watched her make sacrifices every day to ensure that I had opportunities despite the challenges we faced. Her determination taught me the value of hard work, education, and perseverance. My childhood was also marked by trauma and instability. There were times when life felt overwhelming, but those experiences gave me something invaluable: empathy. I understand what it feels like to struggle, to feel unheard, and to need support during difficult moments. That understanding has become one of my greatest strengths and continues to guide the work I hope to do in the future. As an adult, I built a successful career as a school bus driver and worked for many years serving my community. In 2008, a serious car accident changed my life. Multiple surgeries and long-term physical limitations forced me to leave the career I had known for nearly two decades. I faced physical pain, emotional challenges, and financial uncertainty. Rather than allowing that setback to define me, I chose to reinvent myself through education. Today, I am pursuing my degree with a clear purpose. My goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and eventually establish a community-based mental health program that serves underserved youth, families, and individuals impacted by trauma. Through my education and volunteer experience in behavioral health and addiction recovery services, I have seen firsthand how access to support can transform lives. I want to help individuals find hope, healing, and stability during their most difficult moments. Receiving this scholarship would help relieve some of the financial burden associated with completing my degree and continuing to graduate school. More importantly, it would be an investment in the communities I plan to serve. Every class I complete and every step I take toward becoming an LCSW brings me closer to creating programs that provide accessible mental health resources and advocacy for those who often go without support. My story is not defined by loss, trauma, or hardship. It is defined by perseverance, purpose, and a commitment to helping others. This scholarship would help me continue transforming my experiences into meaningful service and lasting impact for future generations.

My family’s life changed in 2017 when my oldest son was arrested for a crime he has always maintained he did not commit. At the time, he was a 21-year-old young man focused on building his future. He was working, planning his career, and attending school. Instead of moving forward, he suddenly found himself caught in a situation that altered the course of his life. That day, he was sitting in his car waiting to meet his girlfriend. While he was parked outside an apartment complex, police were investigating a burglary occurring elsewhere on the property. My son was detained, arrested, and ultimately faced charges despite having no criminal history before that incident. As a frightened young adult facing the possibility of remaining in jail, he accepted a plea agreement in order to regain his freedom and move on with his life. Unfortunately, life did not simply move on. The consequences of that conviction have followed him for nearly a decade. Despite pursuing higher education, developing professional goals, and working toward a future in business and finance, he continues to face barriers because of a felony record. Employment opportunities have been limited. Professional advancement has been difficult. Opportunities that many people take for granted often remain out of reach. The impact did not stop with him. As a single mother and a person with a disability, I felt the effects immediately. I spent countless hours helping him navigate a system we had never encountered before. During that period, I was attending Mt. San Antonio College and struggling to balance my education with the stress of supporting my son. The emotional and financial strain affected our entire household. Even today, those challenges continue to impact our family. What hurts the most is knowing who my son truly is. He is not defined by a court record. He is a caring son, a devoted brother, and a hardworking man who continues to pursue his goals despite the obstacles in front of him. Rather than giving up, he enrolled in college programs, continued his education, and worked toward building a career in finance. His resilience in the face of adversity has inspired me more than he will ever know. This experience has taught me that the consequences of involvement with the criminal justice system extend far beyond the individual. Families carry those burdens as well. It has strengthened my commitment to advocacy, education, and helping others who face systemic barriers. Although this chapter has been painful, it has also shown me the power of perseverance. My son continues to work toward the future he envisioned for himself, and our family continues to believe that one difficult moment should never define an entire lifetime.

If someone had asked me twenty years ago what I wanted to build, I probably would have given a very different answer. Today, my answer is clear. I want to build a pathway to healing for young people and families who feel unseen, unheard, and unsupported. I am currently pursuing a degree in Sociology and Behavioral Social Science at the University of La Verne, and my long-term goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. While many people view education as a way to secure a job, I see it as the foundation for something much larger. I am building a future where mental health services are more accessible, especially for underserved communities and young people who are struggling with trauma. My vision was shaped by my own life experiences. I grew up facing challenges that many children should never have to endure. I experienced loss, instability, and adversity at an early age. I watched family members work tirelessly to overcome obstacles while carrying burdens that often went unseen by others. Those experiences taught me resilience, but they also showed me how many people suffer in silence because they do not know where to turn for help. That is why I want to build more than a career. I want to build a community resource that provides support, advocacy, education, and hope. My goal is to eventually establish a mental health and counseling program that focuses on adolescents, families, and individuals who have experienced trauma. I want young people to know that their circumstances do not define their future and that asking for help is a sign of strength rather than weakness. Education is helping me build the knowledge, skills, and credibility necessary to make this vision a reality. Every class I complete brings me one step closer to creating meaningful change. My studies are teaching me how systems impact people, how communities can be strengthened, and how advocacy can improve lives. The impact of this work extends far beyond me. When one person receives support, entire families benefit. When families become stronger, communities become stronger. By increasing access to mental health resources, reducing stigma, and helping people develop healthy coping skills, I hope to contribute to a future where more individuals can thrive rather than simply survive. The thing I want to build is not something that can be completed overnight. It will take years of education, dedication, and service. However, I believe the strongest structures are built one step at a time. How My Experience With Mental Health Has Shaped My Goals, Relationships, and Understanding of the World Mental health has shaped almost every part of my life, even before I fully understood what mental health was. As a child, I experienced trauma that no child should have to endure. I was sexually abused and removed from my home at a young age. Around that same period of my life, my father was taken away from me forever. He was originally from Lagos, Nigeria and was only thirty-one years old when he was killed. As his only child, I grew up with questions that would never be answered and a loss that would follow me throughout my life. For many years, people did not openly talk about mental health the way they do today. In my family and community, people were often expected to be strong, keep moving, and carry their pain quietly. Looking back, I now understand that many people around me were struggling emotionally while doing their best to survive. One of the people I loved most was my uncle. He served in the military and was someone I looked up to growing up. After experiencing hardships in his life, he turned to alcohol and prescription pills to cope. Eventually, those choices led to serious health problems. He developed liver cancer and was given a second chance after receiving treatment. Unfortunately, addiction is a powerful disease, and he eventually returned to drinking and taking pills. Not long after my mother’s passing, my uncle passed away as well. Watching someone I loved struggle with addiction taught me that mental health and substance abuse are often connected. Many people are not trying to destroy their lives. They are trying to escape pain they do not know how to process. My understanding of mental health deepened even more through my family’s experiences. Recently, my sister lost vision in one eye after a series of medical complications. While many people focus only on the physical loss, I saw the emotional impact as well. I witnessed the grief, frustration, fear, and uncertainty that can come when someone’s life changes overnight. These experiences have shaped how I view relationships. I have learned that everyone is carrying a story that others may never see. Because of that, I try to approach people with empathy rather than judgment. I know what it feels like to struggle, to experience loss, and to watch loved ones face challenges that seem impossible. Those experiences have taught me the importance of listening, compassion, and simply being present for someone when they need support. Most importantly, these experiences have shaped my goals. Today, I am pursuing a degree in sociology and plan to continue into a Master of Social Work program so I can become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. My goal is to work with adolescents and families who are dealing with trauma, mental health challenges, and life circumstances that often leave people feeling unheard. I want young people to know that their experiences do not define their future. I want them to understand that asking for help is not weakness. I want them to know that healing is possible even after tremendous loss and hardship. Mental health is not simply about diagnoses or treatment plans. It is about people. It is about understanding how trauma, grief, poverty, addiction, family dynamics, and life experiences affect the way we see ourselves and the world around us. As his only child, I grew up knowing that a major part of my life story had been taken away before I ever had the chance to truly know him. After his death, my mother became everything. She carried the responsibility of raising me while working multiple jobs to keep our family afloat. Like many single mothers, she rarely had the luxury of slowing down because there were always bills to pay and responsibilities waiting for her. Although my mother worked tirelessly, raising a child was never a one-person job. I was fortunate to have my grandmother and extended family step in and help. Looking back, I realize that I was raised by a village. I remember traveling all over Southern California, from Los Angeles to Long Beach and many places in between. We rode buses, trains, and walked when necessary. Life was not always easy, but somehow the people around me made sure I always had what I needed. My childhood was far from perfect. I experienced trauma at a young age and faced challenges that no child should have to endure. There were times when life felt unfair and overwhelming. However, the women who raised me never allowed hardship to become an excuse for giving up. Instead, they taught me how to keep moving forward even when circumstances were difficult. One of the greatest lessons I learned from my mother and grandmother was resilience. I watched them navigate financial struggles, family challenges, and personal hardships while continuing to show up for the people they loved. They were not perfect, but they were determined. They taught me that strength is not about never falling down; it is about getting back up every time life knocks you down. Those experiences shaped the person I am today. As an adult learner pursuing a college degree, I often draw upon the same determination I witnessed growing up. When classes become difficult, when financial challenges arise, or when life becomes stressful, I remember the example set by the women who raised me. Their sacrifices remind me why I cannot quit. I understand that every scholarship awarded is money that does not have to be repaid later. Even smaller awards can help cover textbooks, transportation, technology, and other educational expenses that often add up quickly. In addition to applying for scholarships, I carefully evaluate educational programs and financial aid opportunities before making major academic decisions. I am currently pursuing my Sociology degree at the University of La Verne and plan to continue into a Master of Social Work program. My goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker specializing in mental health and substance abuse treatment. Because I have a clear career path, I am able to make informed decisions about educational costs while focusing on a profession that offers long-term stability and meaningful service to others. I also recognize the importance of budgeting and living within my means. As a parent, I have learned how to prioritize necessities, manage limited resources, and make thoughtful financial choices. Those same skills help me navigate the financial responsibilities associated with higher education. Every dollar saved today helps reduce financial pressure tomorrow. Another part of my strategy is focusing on a career that allows me to create both personal and community impact. I have spent years advocating for family members dealing with mental health challenges, addiction, trauma, and healthcare barriers. My education is helping me transform that experience into a professional career. By entering a field with strong demand and opportunities for advancement, I am positioning myself to manage future financial obligations responsibly while serving populations that need support and advocacy. As someone from an underrepresented background, I understand that educational debt can affect families for generations. I do not view my degree as simply a personal achievement. I view it as a pathway toward greater financial stability, increased opportunities, and the ability to create a better future for my family. Reducing student debt today allows me to invest more into my children’s future and contribute more effectively to my community. My approach to student debt is built on preparation, persistence, and long-term planning. Through scholarships, responsible financial management, strategic educational choices, and a clear professional goal, I am actively working to minimize debt while maximizing the opportunities that higher education can provide. Every class I complete and every semester I finish is proof that obstacles do not have to determine a person’s future. Currently, I am pursuing a degree in Sociology at the University of La Verne. My ultimate goal is to earn a Master of Social Work and become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I specifically want to work in mental health and substance abuse treatment because I have seen firsthand how these challenges affect individuals, families, and entire communities. Throughout my life, I have witnessed loved ones struggle with addiction, trauma, depression, abandonment, and other mental health challenges. I have also spent years advocating for family members by helping them navigate healthcare systems, connect with resources, communicate with professionals, and access support services. My education is giving me the tools to take what I have already been doing informally and transform it into a professional career. I have witnessed families torn apart, children abandoned, and opportunities lost because of addiction and untreated mental health issues. My passion for social work did not begin when I enrolled in college. It began years ago through advocacy. Long before I became a university student, I was helping family members navigate mental health systems, locate resources, communicate with healthcare providers, and understand treatment options. I have participated in AA and NA communities, volunteered in recovery-related settings, and supported individuals who were trying to rebuild their lives. One experience that deeply shaped me involves my niece. She struggled with severe emotional pain after being abandoned by her father, who openly told her he did not want her. Like many adult learners, I have had to carefully manage the costs associated with returning to school while maintaining everyday responsibilities. Scholarships and financial aid have become essential resources that help make higher education possible. At times, balancing school with personal responsibilities has been overwhelming. As a mother, student, and advocate for my family, I often find myself supporting others while pursuing my own goals. There have been moments of exhaustion, self-doubt, and uncertainty. Today, I am pursuing a Sociology degree at the University of La Verne with plans to continue on to graduate school and become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. As an adult learner pursuing a Sociology degree at the University of La Verne, I have become increasingly aware of the connection between mental health and overall well-being. Students often face stress related to finances, family obligations, work responsibilities, and academic pressures. Without proper support, these challenges can become overwhelming. I believe mental health should be treated with the same importance as physical health because both are essential for long-term success. I advocate for mental health in my community by encouraging open conversations and reducing the stigma surrounding seeking help. Many people, especially within underserved communities, are taught to remain silent about emotional struggles. I believe one of the most powerful things we can do is create safe spaces where people feel comfortable discussing their experiences without fear of judgment. Within my family and community, I often serve as someone people turn to for support, guidance, and encouragement. Whether helping others locate resources, listening without judgment, or encouraging individuals to prioritize their well-being, I try to promote the idea that seeking help is a sign of strength rather than weakness. I have also become a strong advocate for mental health services because I recognize that access to care can be life-changing for individuals and families facing difficult circumstances. My long-term goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and eventually develop programs that support underserved youth, women, and families. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and domestic violence, I know how trauma can affect every aspect of a person’s life. I also know that healing becomes possible when people are given access to support, education, and opportunities. These experiences have inspired my desire to help others find hope and build healthier futures. In addition to my educational goals, I believe in advocating for people who may not always have a voice. Whether helping family members navigate challenges, supporting community members seeking resources, or encouraging others to pursue education, I try to use my experiences to uplift those around me. Service does not always happen through formal volunteer positions. Sometimes it happens through listening, mentoring, advocating, and helping people access the support they need. I chose to pursue higher education because of both my personal experiences and my desire to help African American women who are facing challenges similar to those I have witnessed and experienced. As an African American woman, I understand how trauma, domestic violence, and systemic barriers can affect every aspect of a person’s life, including their mental health, education, financial stability, and self-worth. I am a survivor of domestic violence and childhood sexual abuse. While those experiences were painful, they also helped shape my passion for advocacy, mental health awareness, and social work. I know what it feels like to face difficult circumstances while trying to remain strong for yourself and your family. I also know that many women suffer in silence because they fear judgment, lack resources, or do not know where to turn for help. These experiences have directly influenced my educational goals. I am currently pursuing a Sociology degree at the University of La Verne and plan to continue into a Master of Social Work program. Like many people who experience trauma, I learned how easily emotional pain can affect every aspect of a person’s life, including relationships, confidence, education, and future goals. These experiences strengthened my empathy and inspired me to help others who may feel unheard, unsupported, or overwhelmed by life’s challenges. For many years, I worked in transportation and public service-related careers, including school transportation. After a serious accident resulted in significant injuries and ultimately changed the course of my career, I was forced to reevaluate my future. While the experience was difficult, it also became a turning point in my life. I realized that my greatest purpose was not simply overcoming challenges myself but using those experiences to help others do the same. Today, I am pursuing a Sociology degree at the University of La Verne and plan to continue my education through a Master of Social Work program. My goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and work with individuals and families facing trauma, mental health challenges, and systemic barriers. Despite those obstacles, I never gave up on the belief that education could create new opportunities and allow me to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. For many years, I worked in transportation and public service-related roles, including school transportation. Following a serious accident that resulted in long-term injuries, I was forced to leave a career I had dedicated much of my life to building. Instead of allowing adversity to define me, I chose to pursue higher education and work toward creating meaningful change within my community. I chose to pursue a degree in healthcare because I believe healing should focus on the whole person, not just symptoms. I am studying to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with an emphasis on dual diagnosis, because I want to help people who are facing both mental health challenges and life struggles. Too often, medication is given as the first and only solution, especially for children. My goal is to do things differently—to take time to understand the root of each person’s struggles, not simply rush to medicate. My passion comes from what I have witnessed personally. As a retired school district employee, I saw many children placed on medication without what I felt was a full or proper diagnosis. I watched my niece and other students struggle with being labeled and medicated when the real issues were not being addressed. Seeing it with my own eyes broke my heart, and it motivated me to pursue this path. I am determined to help children receive support that goes beyond a prescription. As a social worker, I want to offer another approach—one that prioritizes listening, understanding, and uncovering the real issues behind a child’s behavior or a person’s mental health challenge. Sometimes medication is necessary, and I support it when it truly helps. But far too often, it becomes the easy answer when families really need resources, counseling, and long-term support. By looking at the whole picture, I hope to guide families toward lasting solutions that empower them instead of masking problems. As an African American woman, I know I can also make a unique impact in my community. Mental health care still carries a heavy stigma in communities of color. Many people believe therapy is not for us or see seeking help as weakness. This mindset leaves families suffering in silence until problems worsen. I want to be part of breaking that stigma. Representation matters. When families of color see someone who looks like them and understands their culture, they may feel safer opening up. I want to be that bridge between the community and mental health care. I want parents to know they have options and that support exists beyond medication. My vision is to create safe, supportive spaces where families feel heard and respected. I want to educate communities about mental health in ways that are culturally sensitive and practical. By focusing on prevention and building trust, I believe I can help reduce stigma and expand access to meaningful care. This mission is also deeply personal. My niece was once prescribed four medications that left her feeling like a zombie. Instead of accepting that, I worked with her for a year through counseling and therapy. Today, she has been off all medications for more than a year. She is thriving, earning straight A’s, and has not had a single episode. Her success showed me what is possible when children are truly understood and supported. For me, pursuing this degree is not just about a career—it is about changing lives. It is about ensuring children are not automatically medicated without proper evaluation, and about showing families in my community that therapy is for us too. As a woman of color, I will bring compassion, knowledge, and advocacy into this work. This is the impact I hope to make: helping people heal in a way that honors their whole self, their culture, and their future.
