As a graduating high school senior, I want to become a nurse because I have always had a strong passion for helping others and making a positive impact in people’s lives. Throughout my journey, I have been drawn to healthcare because it allows me to care for individuals during some of the most important and difficult moments of their lives. Nursing combines compassion, knowledge, and service, which are all qualities that I value deeply. Over the years, my experiences in healthcare programs, internships, and patient care settings have strengthened my desire to pursue this career and confirmed that nursing is the path I am meant to follow. During high school, I completed the three-year program at the Academy of Health Professions located at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center. Through this program, I earned certifications and completed the required hours and exams for my CNA, GNA, and Phlebotomy licenses. These experiences gave me hands-on exposure to the healthcare field and allowed me to work directly with patients. I learned how important empathy, communication, and patience are when caring for others. Being able to comfort patients and support them through difficult situations showed me how meaningful a career in nursing can truly be. In addition to my healthcare training, I participated in dual-enrollment classes through the College of Southern Maryland while attending Leonardtown High School. I completed courses such as biology, psychology, and sociology, which have helped prepare me academically for a future in nursing. These classes expanded my understanding of human behavior, science, and communication, all of which are essential skills for a successful nurse. They also taught me the importance of lifelong learning and dedication in the medical field. I have also had the opportunity to gain real-world experience through internships and healthcare programs. I worked as a CNA intern at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital and through the Apprentice Maryland program at PJ Bean Medical Center. These experiences allowed me to observe healthcare professionals in action and develop confidence in patient care. I saw firsthand how nurses make a difference not only through medical treatment but also through emotional support and advocacy for their patients. The relationships nurses build with patients and families inspired me and further motivated me to continue on this path. Outside of academics, I have been heavily involved in extracurricular activities that have helped shape me into a leader and strengthened my commitment to serving others. I participated in Student to Student, where I helped welcome and support new students transitioning into school. This experience taught me the importance of kindness, inclusion, and making others feel comfortable in unfamiliar situations. I was also a member of the Spanish Honor Society, which allowed me to appreciate different cultures and improve my communication skills. I believe these experiences will help me better connect with diverse patients and families in the future. Additionally, I was involved in Key Club and Student Government, both of which focused on leadership and community involvement. Through these organizations, I participated in volunteer opportunities and school events that emphasized service and teamwork. I was also a member of the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS), which recognized my dedication to academic achievement and career preparation in healthcare. My involvement in SkillsUSA further strengthened my professional skills, leadership abilities, and passion for healthcare by allowing me to collaborate with peers who shared similar career goals. Through these organizations, I gained valuable leadership experience, volunteer opportunities, and teamwork skills that have prepared me for a future in healthcare. More importantly, these activities allowed me to build friendships and connections that I will never forget. Working alongside classmates who shared similar passions and goals created memories and relationships that made my high school experience meaningful. Whether volunteering at events, participating in meetings, or supporting one another through challenges, I gained a sense of community and belonging that has inspired me to continue helping others. After graduating high school, I plan to attend West Virginia University to pursue my RN and BSN degrees through the nursing program. My long-term goal is to become a Family Nurse Practitioner specializing in family or pediatric care. I am especially interested in working with children and families because I want to help patients feel safe, understood, and cared for. I hope to educate families on healthy lifestyles, preventative care, and disease management while building strong relationships within my community. Becoming a nurse is more than just a career choice for me; it is an opportunity to dedicate my life to helping others. Through my education, training, and experiences, I have developed a strong foundation and passion for nursing. I am excited to continue growing in this field and to one day make a lasting difference in the lives of my future patients and their families.
