When my younger cousin was born, he was born with a birth defect, and he had to undergo many surgeries. To entertain him and keep him busy, he would watch videos of the ocean and marine life, which he eventually began to grow a passion for. This inspired me to take up the hobby of researching and learning about aquatics and marine life. This eventually grew into a career that I wanted to pursue, so I took up the International Baccalaureate Environmental Systems and Societies class as well as started to research different colleges and universities that specialized in marine biology. I want to become a marine biologist, not only for my younger cousin but to also educate the world further about the human consequences on the environment around us. I would like to bring awareness to the unfair treatment of marine life and habitat, as well as take part in many programs or even create a program that will bring awareness to help clean the oceans. I also would like to further research the ocean and its marine life and ineptly study the unknown and uncharted waters for new life, as well as solutions that will save endangered habitats and species. Global warming is a universal problem that has been addressed over a couple of years now. I want to further educate the people about the consequences that contribute to this universal problem as well as create solutions that will not only help the earth but the community as well. By becoming a marine biologist, I will contribute to new innovative ideas and knowledge that can further educate the public and bring awareness to threatening environmental issues. I would like to teach our youth so that in the future when they take up leadership roles in our society, they can also further educate people and pass down solutions and ideas that can contribute to saving the earth as a whole. A degree in marine biology equips individuals with a comprehensive understanding of marine ecosystems, their biodiversity, and the numerous factors affecting them. My childhood was filled with hardships and challenges though there was a person that helped me a lot and influenced me to be a better person. My oldest cousin Rachel supports me in my personal decisions and academic achievements. I didn't have a mother or father figure to look up to when I was younger, I had lived with my aunt and her nine kids after she took my siblings and I in, though we’re still wards of the court. It was very hard for her to have spare time to check in on us, because she was busy maintaining jobs to support all of us living in that household. Rachel took it upon herself to make sure my siblings and I were well-fed, hygienic, educated, and healthy. She became the mother figure in my life that I look up to, she has made an outstanding impact on my life that I am immensely grateful for. I believe my cousin is one of the kindest people I know, she's a very hard-working and disciplined person. Rachel is also a very compassionate and hard-driven person, she is not afraid to take matters into her own hands and get things done. She's also very humble and taught me everything I know; I wouldn’t be the person I am today without her guidance and influence. Though she went to college and worked two jobs, she still made time for us. My cousin would sometimes use her paychecks to take us out for a little celebration when me or my siblings would come home with A’s on our report cards, or academic awards such as Honor Roll or High Honor. Before I attended elementary school, I didn't have the basic education that was required for 1st grade, so the summer before 1st grade started, she would make a workbook filled with interactive questions and stories she had made herself. They were based on the subjects that I had missed out on previously in my kindergarten year. She taught me many things and I was able to drastically improve my education, I learned so much from her and more. This helped me stay consistent, even putting me ahead of my class. Since I am the second oldest of five, she took it upon herself to teach me how to care for my other siblings as well as help around the house with chores. Learning all these day-to-day life skills at such a young age made me a little more mature than one would be at that age. Going back and remembering how my cousin played a big part in my childhood and growth as a person, made me realize how much time and effort she had put into raising me and my siblings even though it wasn’t her job to. She had put us first, supported us and what we believed in, and showed my siblings and I parental love that I thought we would never receive. My cousin has nothing but goodness and wellness for us, and for that I am extremely grateful and lucky to have in which I would like to return the favor one day.
