By far, the biggest influence on my life has been my sophomore-year high school art teacher. While many people can point to a teacher who changed their life for the better, I truly believe I would not be pursuing art the way I am today without her unwavering mentorship and encouragement. In a society that often undervalues creative careers, where young artists are frequently encouraged to choose more "practical" paths instead of following their passions, she never once discouraged me from pursuing my dream of becoming an illustrator. Although I understood that building a career in the arts would come with challenges, she always reassured me that my aspirations were valid. She believed that my creativity and dedication could one day lead to a meaningful and fulfilling career, one that would allow me to make a positive impact on the world. My artistic gift is unique because my creative process relies primarily on color to tell stories and establish the mood of my illustrations. While many artists begin by sketching thumbnails to plan their compositions, my first instinct is to develop a color palette that captures the emotion I want the piece to convey. I intentionally use principles of color theory—including color harmonies, complementary colors, and warm and cool palettes, and even monochromatic techniques—to create atmosphere, guide the viewer's eye, and deepen the emotional impact of my work. For me, color is more than a visual element; it is the foundation of my storytelling. A common color relationship in my artwork is orange and blue, which creates strong contrast and visual interest. The warmth of orange naturally draws the viewer's attention, while the coolness of blue creates depth and atmosphere, resulting in a balanced and engaging composition. Another palette I frequently use is yellow, pink, and purple. I strive to create illustrations that feel playful, joyful, and full of wonder. Bright yellow brings a sense of light, optimism, and energy, while rich purple evokes imagination and magic. Pink ties the palette together by adding softness, innocence, and playfulness, creating a whimsical atmosphere that reflects the stories I want to tell. My color palettes are always evolving, and I enjoy experimenting with new color combinations. Each new piece is an opportunity to discover fresh ways of telling stories through color. Once I graduate from university, I hope to turn my passion for art into a career illustrating children's books. My artistic style relies heavily on color theory and surreal imagery to evoke emotion and tell meaningful stories. I would love for my work to become part of picture books, helping create a richer and more immersive reading experience for children. As an illustrator, my role is not simply to draw what is happening in a story, but to interpret how the story feels through imagery. I achieve this through my thoughtful use of color theory, color harmonies, and expressive compositions. I hope my illustrations encourage readers to experience stories on a deeper emotional level through color. They may wonder, Why does this cool blue make me feel sad? Why does this rich purple feel mysterious? Why does this warm pink make me feel happy and comforted? In a time when climate change and the growing use of artificial intelligence can have serious environmental consequences, my artwork highlights the beauty of nature and serves as a reminder to treat our world with intention and care.
