Growing up in a low income household taught me perseverance through constant challenges and limited resources. I learned early how to adapt, problem solve, and stay motivated even when opportunities felt out of reach. Financial constraints meant that stability was never guaranteed, but those experiences built resilience and a strong work ethic. Watching my family navigate hardship showed me the value of determination, sacrifice, and responsibility, shaping the person I am today. These experiences directly influenced my choice to pursue hospitality management with a teaching certification. I became aware of how access to supportive environments, quality education, and basic needs such as food can shape a person’s future. Hospitality is about service, care, and creating welcoming spaces, values that resonate deeply with my upbringing. Pairing this with teaching allows me to not only serve others but also educate and empower them with skills that create opportunity and long term stability. I plan to use my life experience to make a positive impact by creating inclusive spaces that support growth and access. Through hospitality, I want to design environments that make people feel valued and supported, regardless of income or background. Through teaching, I aim to mentor and educate others, especially those from underserved communities, by providing knowledge, training, and encouragement. I also plan to open my own business that prioritizes community engagement, fair employment practices, and education driven leadership. I am actively working toward my goals by committing to my education and gaining the skills needed to lead and teach effectively. Each step I take is guided by my desire to transform challenges into opportunities for others. My background fuels my determination to create meaningful change and use my career to uplift my community and contribute to a more equitable world.
    Tawkify Meaningful Connections Scholarship
Relationships play a foundational role in shaping my long term personal and professional goals, especially as someone pursuing hospitality management with a teaching certification and aspiring to own my own business. At the core of hospitality is people, and meaningful relationships influence how I lead, serve, teach, and grow. Whether romantic, familial, or professional, relationships help me develop the empathy, communication skills, and resilience needed to succeed in a people centered career. On a personal level, relationships teach me emotional awareness and accountability. Romantic relationships and close friendships have shown me the importance of trust, patience, and mutual respect. These experiences help me better understand how to navigate conflict, listen with intention, and grow from challenges rather than avoid them. Learning how to show up for others while also honoring my own needs has shaped my sense of balance, which is essential for long term success. Running a business and working in hospitality can be demanding, and having strong personal relationships keeps me grounded and motivated through both high pressure moments and periods of uncertainty. Family and close relationships also play a major role in shaping my work ethic and values. They remind me why I am pursuing my goals and who I want to impact through my career. Their support gives me the confidence to pursue entrepreneurship and leadership, even when the path feels risky. Knowing I have a strong support system encourages me to take initiative and remain committed to building something meaningful rather than settling for what feels safe. Professionally, relationships are the foundation of hospitality management. Success in this field depends on the ability to build trust with guests, employees, partners, and the community. My teaching certification further reinforces the importance of relationships, as education is rooted in connection, mentorship, and understanding diverse learning needs. Teaching requires patience, adaptability, and empathy, qualities that are strengthened through healthy relationships. These skills directly translate to managing teams, training staff, and creating inclusive environments in hospitality settings. As someone who wants to own my own business, relationships will be one of my greatest assets. Entrepreneurship is not only about strategy and operations, but also about building a strong network of mentors, collaborators, employees, and customers. Relationships help transform a business from a service provider into a trusted part of the community. I want to create a business that values people, whether that means fostering a positive workplace culture, offering educational opportunities, or serving guests in ways that feel personal and intentional. Strong relationships will allow me to lead with integrity and create an environment where others feel respected and motivated. Relationships also shape my leadership style and long term vision. Teaching has shown me the importance of meeting people where they are, encouraging growth, and leading with compassion rather than authority alone. In hospitality and business ownership, this approach helps build loyalty and trust. By prioritizing relationships, I aim to lead teams that feel empowered and supported, which ultimately contributes to long term success and sustainability. In the long run, relationships influence how I define success. My goals are not limited to financial achievement or professional recognition, but also include creating positive experiences, meaningful connections, and opportunities for growth for others. Hospitality management, teaching, and entrepreneurship all rely on strong relationships to thrive. By investing in the people around me, I am building a foundation that supports both my personal fulfillment and my professional aspirations, allowing me to grow as a leader, educator, and business owner who values connection as much as accomplishment.
    Learner Math Lover Scholarship
I love math because it is one of the few things in life that never changes. No matter where you are in the world, no matter what language you speak or what culture you come from, math remains constant. Two plus two will always equal four. That certainty is comforting to me because it provides a sense of stability in a world that is often unpredictable and constantly changing. While opinions, trends, and even rules can shift over time, math stays true to its principles, and that reliability is something I deeply appreciate. What draws me to math is its universal nature. Math does not depend on words, accents, or interpretations. A math problem written in one language can be understood and solved by someone who speaks another language entirely. Numbers and equations create a shared understanding that connects people across the globe. This universality makes math powerful, as it proves that truth can exist beyond cultural and linguistic differences. No matter where you go, 2 plus 2 equals 4, and that simple fact represents a larger idea that logic and reason can unite people. Math also gives me a sense of clarity. In math, there is often a clear path to the correct answer, and that answer can be proven. Unlike subjects where responses may vary based on perspective, math offers certainty when the process is followed correctly. This structure helps me think critically and logically, teaching me how to break down complex problems into manageable steps. The satisfaction of solving a problem and knowing the answer is correct is incredibly rewarding and motivates me to keep learning. Additionally, math teaches discipline and patience. Some problems require time, practice, and persistence to solve, but the effort always leads to understanding. This process has helped me develop problem solving skills that I can apply to other areas of my life. Math has shown me that challenges are not meant to discourage me but to strengthen my ability to think and adapt. Ultimately, my love for math comes from its consistency, fairness, and universality. In every country and every language, the rules of math remain the same. Two plus two will always equal four. That unchanging truth reminds me that even in a constantly evolving world, there are foundations we can rely on, and math is one of them.
    Veterans Next Generation Scholarship
Growing up as the daughter of a veteran has had a profound impact on my personal values and career aspirations. From a young age, I witnessed my parent’s dedication, discipline, and resilience in service to others. Their commitment to putting others before themselves, facing challenges with courage, and maintaining integrity in every situation inspired me to adopt similar principles in my own life. These lessons have shaped the way I approach both my education and my work, teaching me the importance of responsibility, hard work, and perseverance. Watching my parent serve has instilled in me a deep respect for structure, teamwork, and preparation, qualities that have become central to my aspirations in the culinary and hospitality fields. My experiences as a military child have also taught me the value of service to others. I have learned that true success is measured not only by personal achievement but also by the positive impact one has on the lives of others. This perspective has influenced my decision to pursue a career in the culinary arts, where I can combine my passion for cooking with the opportunity to support and uplift others. Volunteering in church kitchens, assisting family members with meal preparation, and helping others learn how to cook healthy meals have all reinforced my desire to create environments where people feel nourished and cared for. I strive to build experiences that go beyond food, providing comfort, guidance, and encouragement to those I serve. Being the daughter of a veteran has also helped me develop resilience and adaptability, skills that are essential in the fast-paced culinary and hospitality industries. I have learned to handle unexpected challenges calmly and effectively, to work collaboratively with a team under pressure, and to maintain focus on long-term goals even in difficult situations. These qualities have strengthened my determination to pursue excellence in every aspect of my career, from refining my cooking skills to leading and mentoring others. Ultimately, my background has shaped my vision for the future. I hope to open a restaurant that combines exceptional cuisine with a welcoming atmosphere and to establish programs that teach children and community members how to cook nutritious meals. I want my work to reflect the values I have learned from my parent’s service, including discipline, compassion, and a commitment to helping others. My experiences as the daughter of a veteran continue to inspire me to work hard, serve with purpose, and make a meaningful impact on the people and communities I encounter.

My name is Corinna Torrance. I graduated from high school on December 19, 2024, when I was only sixteen years old. I am currently attending college to study Hospitality Management with a teaching certification. My ultimate goal is to open a five-star, deliciously nutritious restaurant, but I would like to begin my culinary journey with a food truck while also serving as a culinary instructor, teaching kids how to safely prepare healthy and flavorful meals. I have been majoring in Culinary Arts since the ninth grade, and throughout my journey, my passion for food and hospitality has continued to grow. I chose to pursue an education in the culinary arts because cooking has been a meaningful part of my life for as long as I can remember. It has always felt natural and fulfilling to be in the kitchen. I began cooking at a very young age, and my parents, Papa, and aunts often share stories about how I would climb onto the counter to reach the cabinets so I could make myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich if my siblings were taking too long. From an early age, I loved being independent in the kitchen, experimenting with ingredients, and creating meals for myself and my family. As I grew older, my interest in cooking developed into a true passion. I enjoyed being involved in every aspect of the kitchen, whether it was washing dishes, prepping ingredients, baking desserts, or cooking full meals. The kitchen became a place where I felt confident, inspired, and motivated to learn. My personal experiences in the kitchen have further shaped my growth and passion for culinary arts. During holidays, I helped my grandmother bake cakes and pies, learning patience, precision, and the importance of tradition. I also assisted my mother in preparing side dishes and main courses, gaining valuable skills in organization, timing, and multitasking. Occasionally, my father and I would prepare seafood boils for our family, teaching me teamwork and coordination. Additionally, I volunteered in a church kitchen, working alongside a trained chef who helped refine my skills through guidance and instruction. Since my freshman year of high school, I have worked in many different kitchens alongside students, instructors, and professional chefs from diverse backgrounds. Each experience taught me something new—whether a unique technique, a more efficient method, or a different approach to cooking. These experiences have strengthened my skills, challenged me, and deepened my love for the culinary arts. Looking toward the future, my career goals include continuing to develop my culinary skills through formal education and hands-on experience in professional kitchens. I hope to learn from experienced chefs, explore a variety of cuisines, and become a well-rounded culinary professional. Over time, I aim to move into a leadership role, where I can mentor others and foster a positive, collaborative kitchen environment. Ultimately, I dream of opening my restaurant and using the profits to establish a community soup kitchen. I hope this space will bring together food, hospitality, and care, making people feel welcomed and valued. My long-term vision is for this program to grow large enough to support individuals in regaining independence and building a brighter future. Through cooking, teaching, and service, I want to make a lasting impact on both my community and the culinary world.

The quote “Iron sharpens iron” teaches the important value of relationships by showing how people improve and refine one another through social interaction, challenge, and constructive criticism. This quote comes from the Bible, specifically Proverbs 27:17, which states, “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” This verse reminds us that we are not meant to grow or succeed alone. Just as iron becomes sharper when it comes into contact with another piece of iron, people grow stronger, wiser, and more capable through meaningful relationships. The individuals in our lives challenge us to think differently, encourage us when we feel discouraged, and sometimes correct us when we make mistakes. Although true friendships and working relationships are not always comfortable, they are essential because they help shape our character, values, and faith. Through honest conversations, shared experiences, and accountability, God uses other people to help mold us into the individuals we are meant to become. The quote “Iron sharpens iron” strongly connects to my culinary aspirations because growth and excellence in the kitchen come from interaction, challenge, and consistent practice. On a literal level, it reflects the process of sharpening knives with steel, where one piece of metal refines another to improve effectiveness and precision. Without regular sharpening, a knife becomes dull and inefficient, just as a cook’s skills can stagnate without guidance and feedback. Symbolically, the quote represents how chefs and cooks improve by working alongside others, learning through mentorship, collaboration, and constructive criticism. In a kitchen environment, ideas, techniques, and creativity are sharpened through shared experiences, teamwork, and even healthy competition. Each interaction pushes individuals to refine their skills, improve their efficiency, and elevate the quality of their work. Just as iron requires contact and friction to become sharper, culinary mastery is achieved through continuous learning, feedback, and engagement with others who challenge and inspire improvement. My personal experiences in the kitchen further demonstrate how “iron sharpens iron” has shaped my growth and passion for cooking. I have enjoyed cooking since I was two years old, and growing up, I always loved watching and helping in the kitchen. During holidays, I would assist my grandmother with baking cakes and pies, learning patience, precision, and tradition. As I have pursued the hospitality industry since my freshman year of high school, I have prepared food in many different kitchens with students, instructors, and chefs from various backgrounds. Over the years, working alongside so many talented individuals has allowed me to learn something efficient or unique from each person. Each experience has challenged me, refined my abilities, and strengthened my passion for the culinary arts, truly reflecting the meaning of “iron sharpens iron.”
