Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
One of the hardest things about struggling with your mental health is that people cannot always see what you’re going through. You can smile, laugh, go to school, and act like everything is fine while your mind is filled with worries. For a long time, I thought being strong meant keeping my feelings to myself. But growing up has taught me that sometimes the strongest thing you can do is admit that life is hard and still find a reason to keep going. Throughout my life, I’ve struggled with anxiety, overthinking, and not always believing in myself. School wasn’t always easy for me. There were times when I felt overwhelmed with assignments, frustrated when I didn’t understand something, or discouraged when I compared myself to other students. Sometimes I questioned whether I was smart enough or capable of accomplishing my goals. Even when I was doing my best, I worried that my best wasn’t good enough. Outside of school, I also had personal challenges that affected me emotionally. Having a brother who struggles with substance abuse has taught me how difficult it can be to watch someone you love face battles you cannot fight for them. It’s hard seeing someone you care about struggle while knowing there’s only so much you can do. Sometimes I felt worried, helpless, and confused. It made me realize that mental health and substance abuse don’t just affect one person. They can affect an entire family. On top of everything, I’ve always felt pressure to succeed and make my family proud, especially my mom. As a single mother raising three children, she has made sacrifices to give us opportunities and a better future. Seeing how hard she works motivates me, but it also makes me afraid of disappointing her. I’ve had to learn that making my family proud doesn’t mean I have to be perfect. It means continuing to try, even when things don’t go the way I planned. These experiences have changed how I treat people and how I see the world. I’ve learned that everyone is fighting battles that others may know nothing about. Instead of judging someone for their struggles, I try to understand what they might be going through. I’ve also learned that I can’t control every situation, but I can control the choices I make for my own future. Graduating from high school and attending college is more than just another step in my education. It’s proof that I can accomplish things even when I doubt myself. My goal is to build a successful career, become financially stable, and create a future where I can support myself and eventually give back to the people who have supported me. My mental health struggles have not made my journey easy, but they have helped me become more understanding, determined, and resilient. I’m still learning how to manage my anxiety, trust myself, and stop overthinking everything. I know there will be more challenges ahead, but I’m no longer allowing fear to decide what I’m capable of achieving. I may not be able to change every difficult situation around me, but I can choose not to let those situations determine who I become.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My goal is to build a stable and successful career by gaining education, certifications, and hands-on experience that will help me become independent and create a strong future. After graduating from Park Center High School, I plan to continue my education at Ridgewater Community College and pursue opportunities in skilled trades and transportation, including earning my Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). I have chosen this path because I enjoy learning through hands-on experiences, solving problems, and developing skills that can be used in the real world. I want a career where my hard work and dedication can make a difference. Skilled trades and transportation are important industries that provide opportunities for growth, stability, and advancement. My goal is to become a dependable professional who takes pride in his work and continues learning throughout his career. My first step is to continue my education at Ridgewater Community College and complete the training needed to prepare for my career goals. I plan to use resources available through the college, including instructors, academic advisors, career services, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities. These resources will help me stay on track, understand my career options, and gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed. My plan also includes obtaining my CDL and gaining work experience in the transportation industry. A CDL can provide opportunities in trucking, logistics, construction, manufacturing, and other industries that rely on skilled workers. As I gain experience, I plan to continue building my skills and exploring opportunities for advancement. My long-term goal is to have a career that allows me to support myself, continue growing, and contribute positively to my community. Financial planning is an important part of reaching my goals. My estimated expenses include college tuition and fees, CDL training costs, books, supplies, transportation, testing fees, and other career-related expenses. I plan to manage these costs by applying for scholarships, using financial aid opportunities, creating a budget, and working while attending school. I understand that investing in my education and training is an important step toward building a successful future. My timeline begins with starting my education at Ridgewater Community College and completing the required coursework and training. Over the next one to two years, I plan to earn my CDL, gain experience, and begin building my career. As I move forward, I will continue looking for opportunities to improve my skills through additional training, certifications, and real-world experience. I know there may be challenges along the way, including balancing school, work, and personal responsibilities. My plan is to stay focused, remain responsible, ask questions, and use the resources available to me. If my career goals change, I will continue exploring related opportunities in skilled trades, advanced manufacturing, and other fields where I can use my abilities. My goal is not only to earn a license or complete a program, but to build a lifelong career. I want to become someone who is hardworking, reliable, and respected. With determination, education, and support from my family, instructors, and community, I believe I can achieve my goals and create a successful future.
