Overcoming Adversity - Jack Terry Memorial Scholarship
My name is Corben Milsap. I have faced many adversities in my life and have learned many lessons about overcoming them from my family. I grew up in the small town of Heidelberg, Mississippi and was raised by my aunt and uncle. My aunt took me in at a young age and she taught me how to be strong, motivated, and determined. Even though we didn’t have much money, my family gave me love, support, and taught me the importance of working hard and giving back to others. These lessons helped shape the person I am today.
One of the most important parts of my life has been learning how to work hard and not give up, even when things are tough. My aunt and uncle took me in when I was just two months old and raised me on a small single income. While we didn’t have a lot, they made sure I had everything I truly needed. After losing my aunt, I’ve worked even harder to make her proud and honor the sacrifices she made for me. Throughout my time in school, I’ve shown dedication and leadership in academics as well as extracurricular activities. I’ve worked hard to become the baritone section leader in the Heidelberg High Marching Band. I’ve had this role for the last 2 years. In my first year as a member of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), I placed 1st in our district competition in Business Ethics and 2nd at the state level. I have also been a member of the BETA club since 6th grade. The experiences I had in the FBLA and BETA clubs helped me discover my passion for marketing and business. I love solving problems, being creative, and leading others. I also believe that being a good leader means helping others succeed too.
I hope to one day own my own Marketing firm. I plan to earn a degree in Marketing with a minor in Graphic Design from the University of Mississippi. I’m passionate about marketing and design, and I believe my creativity and determination will help me make a real difference. Although, I want to have personal success, I also want to be in a position to help others. I want to give back to my community and help people who are facing the same challenges I once did. Just like my aunt and uncle supported me, I want to support others.
Receiving this scholarship would make a big difference in my life. It would help relieve some of the financial stress and allow me to focus on my education and goals. More importantly, it would help me in my journey of leadership, service, and helping others. These are all the values that I have learned from my family. To me, success isn’t just about achieving my own dreams. It’s about making a positive impact on my community and helping others reach their goals too. With the support of my sisters and brother (my aunt’s children) and scholarship opportunities like this, I know that I can continue my path of creating a business, leading with kindness, and giving back to those around me.
Maria's Legacy: Alicia's Scholarship
A college degree will change my life and the lives of future generations in my family by giving me the tools I need to succeed. Growing up in Heidelberg, Mississippi, I learned a lot from my aunt and uncle. They didn’t have a lot of money, but they taught me how to work hard, stay motivated, and always keep going, even when things get tough. Because of them, I know that education is the key to a better life. A college degree will not only help me achieve my dreams, but it will also show my family that we can overcome challenges and succeed, no matter where we come from. It will set an example for my younger siblings and future generations, showing them that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
Personally, a college degree would mean everything to me. It would represent all the effort I’ve put in to get to where I am, and it would honor my aunt’s memory. My aunt played a huge role in my life, and I promised her I would make her proud by working hard and achieving my goals. A degree would be a way to keep that promise and show how much I’ve grown as a person. It’s not just a piece of paper – it’s a symbol of my dedication and a reminder of how far I’ve come.
I’m really passionate about marketing and design because I love solving problems, being creative, and helping others. I discovered this passion through activities like FBLA and BETA, where I’ve had the chance to lead and compete. For example, I placed 1st in Business Ethics at the district level and 2nd at the state level. These experiences helped me realize that I want to work in marketing and design when I grow up. I also love being a leader, like when I was the baritone section leader in the marching band, where I learned the importance of teamwork and helping others succeed.
I want to use my love for marketing and design to give back to my community, just like my aunt and uncle helped me. They supported me when I needed it most, and I want to do the same for others. One of my biggest goals is to own my own marketing firm, but I also want to make sure I’m helping people along the way. I want to be a leader who lifts others up and helps them achieve their goals, just like I’ve been helped.
In conclusion, a college degree would mean a lot to me. It’s the first step toward making my dreams come true, and it will help me become someone who can make a positive impact on my community. With my family’s support and opportunities like scholarships, I know I can achieve my goals, develop my leadership skills, and give back to others just like I’ve been given so much.

My name is Corben Milsap, and I have spent my life working hard to make a positive difference, not only in my community but also for my own future. Growing up in the small rural town of Heidelberg, Mississippi, and being raised by my aunt in a single-income household, I’ve learned firsthand what it means to face challenges and persevere. These experiences have driven me to be self-motivated, determined, and focused on success. I aspire to be a future business leader with a degree in Marketing, and through this pursuit, I aim to contribute to the community that helped shape me.
Coming from an unconventional family background, I have always felt a deep sense of gratitude and responsibility. My aunt and uncle took me in when I was just two months old, and despite not having the material wealth many take for granted, they gave me the love and support I needed to thrive. My aunt’s sacrifices, in particular, inspire me every day, and I’ve worked hard to honor those sacrifices by striving for academic and personal success.
As I’ve navigated my educational journey, I’ve embraced the opportunity to apply my strengths in creativity and problem-solving, particularly in marketing and design. These two areas have allowed me to make an impact in various ways. During my first year in the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), I was honored to place first in our district competition in Business Ethics and second at the state level. These achievements not only reinforced my passion for business but also showed me that I have the potential to lead, innovate, and influence others in a positive way.
I know that success isn’t just about individual achievements, it’s also about lifting others up. I am committed to using my skills to make a difference in my community. Having been on the receiving end of kindness and support from my family, I now want to be in a position where I can do the same for others. I believe that by building a successful career in marketing, I can help provide opportunities for those who are less fortunate, just as my aunt and uncle did for me.
Success, for me, isn’t just about a stable career. It’s about fulfillment, continuous growth, and creating opportunities for others. I want to build a future where I can help guide those who face challenges similar to what I faced growing up, providing them with the resources and support to overcome adversity. I also want to ensure that I no longer experience the hardships of my past, so I can create a more comfortable and fulfilling life for myself and those I care about.
I am committed to making my goals a reality. With determination and hard work, I am focused on completing my bachelor’s degree in Marketing, as well as my minor in graphic design, at the University of Mississippi. I know that I can achieve success, not just for myself, but for the community that I want to help. My path forward will be one of continual effort, and I am determined to leave a lasting, positive impact on those around me.
WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship
One of my greatest achievements so far is my journey with the Heidelberg Marching Band, where I turned my self-doubt into leadership. When I first joined, I wasn’t sure if I could keep up. I had only been playing the baritone for about a year and a half, and the thought of playing with more experienced musicians was overwhelming. On top of that, my ADHD made reading music hard, and I often wondered if I should quit and try something else, like basketball. But my family, especially my aunt and uncle who raised me, pushed me to keep going. They raised me with limited resources but taught me important values like hard work, perseverance, and self-motivation. Their support helped me overcome my doubts and keep practicing. Instead of quitting, I worked harder. I asked for help from band members, practiced my scales, and kept pushing myself.
Looking back, I’m proud I didn’t quit. Through hard work, I became the baritone section leader. This experience taught me that self-doubt is normal, but persistence leads to success. It showed me that if I don’t give up, I can do things I once thought were impossible. This experience taught me that I am more capable than I thought. It showed me that growth comes from facing challenges and working hard. I carry this lesson with me as I look to the future. The same persistence that helped me in the marching band will help me achieve my goals in marketing.
In the future, I want to become a business leader with a degree in Marketing. I plan to attend the University of Mississippi to earn a degree in Marketing with a minor in graphic design. I’m passionate about marketing and design because I love using creativity to solve problems. I also want to give back to my community. Growing up with the single income of my uncle has taught me the importance of helping others. I hope to be in a position where I can do the same for people who need support.
In my career, I hope to find a job that challenges me and helps me grow. I want to pursue my passions in marketing, become financially successful, and make a positive impact on others. I’m determined to build a life where I can thrive professionally and help those who helped me along the way. The lessons I’ve learned from the marching band and the support of my family will guide me as I work toward my dreams.

Success Beyond Borders
Title: The Beginning of Success
Opening Scene:
A small house in the small town of Heidelberg, Mississippi shows up on screen. The sun sets behind a field and the sky is casted in reds and purples. Inside, a young man, Corben Milsap, sits at the kitchen table surrounded by textbooks and notebooks. His face is a mixture of focus and uncertainty as he writes out a plan outlining his future.
(Narrator voice) Corben writes: "I’ve always believed success isn’t just about where you start, but where you end up. Growing up in Heidelberg, I learned that life doesn’t hand you opportunities and you have to create them. My aunt and uncle took me in when I was just a baby. They didn’t have much, but they gave me everything I needed: love, encouragement, and the belief that I could achieve greatness."
The camera shifts to the FBLA conference scene, where Corben stands confidently, accepting the first-place trophy for Business Ethics at the district competition. He smiles with pride while surrounded by his peers and friends. The scene transitions to him at home, working on design projects and practicing marketing strategies, always pushing himself to improve.
The camera then transitions to a flashback: a younger Corben, holding his baritone, hesitates as he watches the varsity band rehearse. The music is fast and precise, and Corben, still learning, feels the weight of his doubts. He’s been playing for a year and a half, but his ADHD makes reading music difficult. The camera focuses on his anxious face.
But instead of quitting, Corben pushes through the discomfort. The scene shows him practicing, determined to improve. Slowly, he gains confidence, playing seamlessly with the rest of the band. The scene is now him leading the baritone section as the section leader.
(Narrator voice) Corben also writes "But I didn’t give up. I learned that success comes from facing challenges head-on. Believing in yourself, even when the odds are against you, is what makes the difference."
Corben begins to think about his future and image what it would be like: The scene cuts to the University of Mississippi, bustling with students. Corben walks across campus, the camera following him as he enters a marketing lecture hall.
The camera transitions to Corben standing on a rooftop at sunset, gazing out over the city skyline. He reflects on his journey. How he came from a small town to a university campus. A montage of photos of his aunt and uncle fills the screen, reminding him of their sacrifices.
(Narrator voice) Corben also writes "I want to make my aunt proud. She gave me everything when I had nothing. I want to honor her sacrifices. The road ahead is long, but I’m ready. With my degree in hand, I’ll be ready to lead, create, and give back."
The camera pulls back as the sky turns pink, the screen fading to black with the promise of a bright future.
(Narrator voice) Corben writes his final line: "This is only the beginning."
