One of the main reasons I’m passionate about becoming an electrical lineworker is the critical role they play in our daily lives. Ensuring that homes, businesses, and communities have reliable access to electricity is essential for modern life. The idea of being part of a team that maintains and repairs the electrical grid, especially during emergencies, is both motivating and fulfilling for me. I want to be someone who can make a tangible difference in times of need, whether it’s restoring power after a storm or ensuring that a community has access to electricity.
My desire to create an impact stems from a strong sense of community and service. I believe that by ensuring the reliability of the electrical infrastructure, I can contribute to the safety and well-being of my community. Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My primary goal is to become a skilled and certified electrical lineworker, contributing effectively to my community and building a stable career. To achieve this, I have laid out a comprehensive plan that includes education, practical experience, financial planning, and continuous learning.

The program duration is 20 months, which ensures thorough training and preparation for the field.
Resources needed include tuition and fees, which amount to approximately $18,420 for the entire program. To cover this, I will apply for scholarships, financial aid, and potentially take out a student loan. I will also need specific tools and safety gear, including climbing boots and gear, hard hats, gloves, and basic electrical tools, which I estimate will cost around $3,500. Living expenses such as housing, food, and transportation will be around $12,000 per year, bringing the total annual budget to approximately $33,920.
Upon completing my education, I plan to start working as an apprentice lineworker. Apprenticeships are a great way to gain practical experience while earning a wage. During this time, I will work under the supervision of experienced lineworkers, learning the nuances of the job and improving my skills. The typical duration for an apprenticeship is about four years, after which I aim to pass the exams required to become a journeyman lineworker.
I believe in the importance of continuous learning and staying updated with the latest industry practices. I plan to attend workshops, additional certification courses, and industry conferences. Staying informed about new technologies and safety practices is crucial in this field. This commitment to learning will help me advance to higher positions, such as a master lineworker or even a supervisory role.
In planning this path, I have considered potential challenges and how to address them. One possible hurdle is the physical demand of the job. To prepare for this, I am committed to maintaining good physical fitness, which is essential for the demanding tasks involved in linework. Additionally, I understand the importance of balancing work and personal life, so I plan to set aside time for rest and recreation to avoid burnout.
Timelines for my plan include completing the Electrical Lineworker Program in 20 months, followed by a 4-year apprenticeship, and then achieving journeyman certification. Continuous learning and career advancement will be ongoing throughout my career.
By following this detailed plan, I am confident in achieving my goal of becoming a skilled and certified electrical lineworker. This journey requires dedication, hard work, and careful planning, but I am committed to seeing it through and making a positive impact in my community.

We did our best to adapt, supporting each other through the uncertainties and challenges.
One of the hardest periods for us was losing my great grandfather due to COVID-19 on Christmas Eve in 2020. He was a pillar of strength and wisdom in our family, and his passing left a huge void in our family. Just when we were grappling with that loss, my grandfather, his son, contracted COVID-19 shortly after. It was a frightening time, filled with worry and anxiety for his health. Thankfully, he recovered, but the experience left a lasting impact on all of us.
These events have taught me valuable lessons about resilience, the importance of family, and the power of community. As a lineman, I will be on the front lines, ensuring that communities have the power and resources they need to recover from disasters. I know it’s not just about fixing power lines; it’s about bringing light back into people’s lives during their darkest hours.
I am committed to using my skills and experiences to serve others and to continue growing both personally and professionally. My journey has taught me that no matter how tough things get, with determination and support, anything is possible. I hope to carry these lessons forward and inspire others to do the same.
Throughout high school, I’ve worked hard to maintain my grades while also being involved in extracurricular activities. I believe in balancing academics with other interests to become a well-rounded individual. This approach has prepared me for the rigorous training and challenges ahead at Texas State Technical College and beyond.
Thank you for considering my story. I am excited about the future and the positive impact I hope to make in the world, using my experiences and dedication to help those in need.

John Geremia Memorial Industrial Trades Scholarship
My name is Connor Lovelady, I am currently a senior at Wylie High School. I have been accepted into the electrical lineworker program at TSTC in Abilene, TX.
During my junior year in high school, I was part of the Agricultural Mechanics class, and we had a group project to design and build a 97-gallon octagon offset smoker. Our teacher provided the basic guidelines, but it was up to us to plan, source materials, and execute the project.
Early on, I noticed that while everyone was enthusiastic, we lacked direction. So, I took the initiative to lead the project. I organized our first meeting to brainstorm ideas and assign specific roles based on each team member's strengths. We divided the tasks into designing, sourcing materials, construction, and testing.
We encountered a significant challenge when we realized our initial design had flaws and would not function efficiently. This could have derailed our project, but I encouraged the team to view it as a learning opportunity rather than a setback. We went back to the drawing board, consulted with our teacher, and made the necessary adjustments to our design.
Throughout the project, I emphasized the importance of teamwork and communication. We held regular meetings to track our progress and address any issues promptly. Despite some disagreements and setbacks, we managed to stay on track and completed the offset smoker on time.
The outcome was a functional and impressive smoker that we were all proud of. The team received positive feedback from our teacher and the judges at all of the ag mechanic shows we attended. The experience was incredibly rewarding. It taught me valuable lessons about leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving.
However, looking back, there are things I would do differently. I would involve the team more in the initial planning phase to ensure everyone felt ownership of the project. Additionally, I would allocate more time for testing and troubleshooting to avoid last-minute issues.
Overall, this experience showed me the importance of initiative, collaboration, and adaptability—skills that are crucial for any trade, including becoming an electrical lineworker. I learned that leadership is not just about giving directions but also about listening, supporting your team, and navigating challenges together.
Koehler Family Trades and Engineering Scholarship
I am incredibly passionate about pursuing the Electrical Lineworker and Management Technology program at Texas State Technical College. This program excites me because it aligns perfectly with my interests and skills. Throughout high school, while my friends were planning to attend big universities for traditional degrees, I always felt drawn to a more hands-on approach to learning. I've always enjoyed building things and understanding how they work, and this program allows me to do just that.
My upbringing has significantly influenced who I am today. Growing up, my parents instilled in me the importance of hard work and being a contributing member of my community. Neither of my parents were college bound—my dad is an auto technician—but they always supported my decision to follow my own path. They reassured me that it didn’t matter if I went to college or not, as long as I was dedicated and passionate about what I did.
Throughout high school, I often felt like an outsider. My friends had these grand plans to attend prestigious universities and earn impressive degrees, but I never shared that interest. Instead, I found myself captivated by the mechanics of how things work and the process of building and creating. This difference made me feel a bit out of place at times, but it also helped me realize the importance of following my own interests and passions.
Discovering the Electrical Lineworker program was a huge relief for me; it felt like finding my true calling. This program not only matches my interests but also promises a fulfilling career where I can make a tangible impact. When I learned about the program, I felt an immediate connection. It was as if everything I had been interested in and passionate about had come together in one place. I could see myself working outdoors, solving problems, and contributing to the community in a meaningful way.
Through my experiences and my parents’ support, I’ve learned the value of pursuing what truly excites me, rather than conforming to societal expectations. My parents have always been my biggest cheerleaders, encouraging me to follow my heart and pursue what I love. Their unwavering support has been a cornerstone in my life, providing me with the confidence to make decisions that might not always align with the conventional path.
In essence, this program represents more than just a degree; it’s a journey towards a career that I am genuinely passionate about. It reflects my personal growth, the values my parents taught me, and my desire to work hard and make a difference in my community. I am excited to learn, grow, and contribute in ways that feel authentic to who I am. This path may be different from many of my peers, but it’s one that I am proud to walk. I look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, knowing that I am following my true passion.
